Voltron References - Creating Pepakura Files

I don't know that there is a 3D printer big enough to print these. I think mine still has the largest printable area and it still wouldn't be large enough. I can't wait to see the finished costume in person! You had BETTER bring the kids by my house for Halloween! This is epic!

I know we used to launch the Halloween night candy-rush from Jim's house (back when you lived nearby too).

Do your kids trick-or-treat around your neighborhood, or somewhere else? We should definitely plan to meet-up and hit somewhere together this year! :)

This could be broken down into sections and stacked for printing. For example the red lion body is basically a box, separate the outer walls only. They could be laying down stacked like dominoes with a break-a-way spacer.

Yeah, we take them around the neighborhood, but don't really venture out (at least not yet). There are a LOT of kids in the neighborhood, and I try to do a little decorating around the yard. It's like how I remember Halloween as a kid... everyone spills out of their house and the streets are full of people. You should definitely come by!

Red/Green Lion Elbow

Both the Red and the Green Lion have the same hinge elbow. I tried to have it so the outside part is still covered when bent.

I forgot to ask how much detail you wanted to keep. The feet and legs for the arms are going to be easy to do since they are all the same for the Red and Green Lion.

The lower lion legs (like what you have modeled) will definitely all be the same. So, as long as they are built with both sides, they can be flipped to be right or left legs. The TOP part of the lion legs are slightly different (front legs vs back legs). It's only a minor difference really, but the angle from the shoulder/hip toward the attachment point of the lower leg is slightly different between the back and front versions.

Just thought I'd mention this! :)

from what I can tell, the details at the joints will be done as separate "Disks" with both sides smooth. You can ether put a pin in it so the legs can move, or just glue it solid. I wasn't planing on doing the tails for the arms because it is used to connect to the Black Lion. It will be easy to re-add them to the the file.

And yes, the body is slightly different, the red is more square while the green is more round. I haven't looked recently, but I believe the Yellow and Blue will follow the same similarities.

Just had a look, weren't kidding about the detail. Currently trying to remake Yellow.

Yep, for the red and green, most of it isn't a 3D object, more like small walls placed together which makes reducing the polygon count impossible.

Went looking for a reference image to aproach the Black Lion because of how the shoulders are shaped and found this... too cute...

I'll do a couple of versions, one with the shoulders out wide like the toy, and one with them short close to the side for better fitting. indiefilmgeek, do you want the body to be a top and bottom piece setup? we have more than enough detail in the files to set it up anyway you want.

I missed the lines you drew on the pic. All the pieces of the legs will separate for assembly. I'll modify the rear section to match what you have on the photo.

Yeah, her dad rocks! Here's a link to some of the build for that one as well as pics of her as Bumblebee. Her dad has also done a Predator costume that kicks ass. I'd be THRILLED to produce something at his Voltron level. :)

I'd probably use the a narrower Black Lion chest to fit my son better, but if you'd like to do both I'll unfold them so anyone that needs a wider version will have it. I'd would love to the chest and then the cod piece as two separate files. I'll probably use a painted suit under the Voltron pieces, and I'll let that work for most of the joints and stomach areas.

Thanks!

Actually, I'm not sure it's worth it... Looking closely at the Die Cast model (which is very detailed), it seem like this difference between the rear and front lion legs are only for the ARMS of Voltron. Take a look below.

To me the rear legs of the Blue and Yellow lion look JUST like the front legs. So, I think one set of legs that can be flipped to the right or left side will work perfectly for my purposes!

Understood, I had built in a flat spot for the leg hip to connect to on the Red. Flipping the let will cover the entire section. I should have the Legs for Red and Green done tonight, with most if not all of Green finished. I'm itching to start on the Black lion. Ill look for reference material for the sword tonight.

I remember the Star Shield that came with the toy, but don't remember it in the cartoon.

That's awesome! I printed out the Red Lion head last night and cut it out. I plan to try to glue enough of it together tonight to see if it's the correct scale for my kiddo. I'll definitely post some pics! :)
