My name is Bryan Rogers...
I am a 20 yr. old college student with a major in Art Studio and minor in Business.
SO, here is my question to you.... I currently am attending Community college and working towards my GED...
At this season In my life my goal is to work in a SFX studio doing the calibur of work that WETA (for instance) does.
Basically I'm just curious to find out.... the seasoned and wise prop warriors that you are... how did you get where you are today? Where are you currently in the SFX field and are you happy where you are? Is this the dream you had when you were my age? Or just where you ended up. Is the dream still alive?
What would be (based on your experiences), your best advice into getting into this chosen field? What colleges, classes, books... etc. can you recommend to supplement the path to this kind of career.
OR, if you had to do it over again what would you have done 'better'?
In other words, as an aspiring artist in the Special Effects industry.... what do I need to know from the ground up. Where to start? Short term goals?
ANYTHING!
The main reason I'm asking YOU all is...
a) Because my college advisors have NO idea what to tell me when I've told them my goals.
b) Because you ARE this industry.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this as I would one day like to join the ranks of the skilled, knowledgable, and professional (and yes, nerdy) prop builders on this board.

Here is the rest of my story if you feel like reading it ....
I started costuming in 2004 as a Junior in High School when I became 'tired' with all the cruddy spiderman suits out there when I was looking around for Halloween costumes. I came across Tim Lane's website, and in turn.. the Superherohype.com boards.
There I learned what was needed to create a (spiderman) costume from scratch, and, with absolutely NO experience, I created a pattern, learned how to sew, and assembled my first spiderman suit.
I am still proud of my first project , and am still learning new ways to create costumes and am refining my skill.
From the Superherohype.com boards, I ran into the BOTB... where I learned and became inspired to create an 'all foamies' batman begins suit using a wetsuit as a base. It turned out 'OK'. But it was fine for my 2005 halloween costume and the ladies still loved it
At this point I started learning how to make 'props' (like the 'duct-tape' begins gauntlets), and over the course of the next year I REALLY got into costume making.
From my own character design I created my own Jedi character

With help from Jon Brown, I finished a Superman returns suit.
Over a 1 yr. process and 3 versions later, I've made a "Link" costume from The Legend of Zelda series.

I am currently working on a Jack Sparrow costume (and theV2 upgrades)
(no picture)
More recently I did the Spiderman symbiote suit...
and MOST recently... with discovering how to fiberglass I've been working on a Spartan costume and the associated props.

Hehe, gauntles and greaves are coming soon.
OH, btw... the guys at the BOTB got tired of seeing my other costumes and pointed me to the LOH, who when they got tired of seeing my non-superhero stuff... pointed me here :lol
LASTLY, based on the things I've shown you... and being honest. What are my chances of being truly successfull in the prop-building field? Yes, I am a determined individual, and can learn quickly. I just want to make sure I'm taking the right path.
Thanks for reading all of this (if you did)
I'm Looking foreward to your replies and wisdom
