Ver1 Salzo Red 5 Build!

Hey guys

I was asked a few weeks ago now to build up this Salzo kit by a very cool member here!
Its took a while to get the hull together as she was a bit warped here and there, but nothing us X wing builders arent used to. As always, thanks to Mike for a great kit!
She is to be Red 5, and while im no fan of 5, its been educational working out colors and markings over the past few weeks, truth is, ive hardly ever looked hard at this prop!
The paint work is the usual matt black base with a gloss white top coat.
As you all know, this is then scuffed and rubbed down with fine wire wool to get a good worn patchy effect!
Ive got to placing on the markings today, the grey green took a while to get mixed, and sadly looks more green in the pics, but im going to play with misting it out some to subdue the contrast.
Its been fun looking at how guys like Rob, Matt Meyer and Bob tackled her, and my god im doing my best to keep up with the Jones' and there amazing paint ups!
Ill update next week as weathering and misting will be underway.
As always crits and opinions always welcomed, more so on this bird as, did i mention? Im no Red 5 fan LOL.

HOLY SMOKES Lee! :eek:eek

duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! :cool

Indeed! Allan's statement very much applies! You hit the ground running with this beastie build!

OUTSTANDING MY FRIEND!!! :love:love:love

(y)cool:thumbsup

wow, i just started to paint mine but its the first time I've ever used an airbrush & I am rushing some what, you have given me the inspiration to slow down & stop being a jerk. /your red 5 looks simply amazing & I really cant wait to see more. Top job Lee. Just out of interest what white did you use as a base coat?

Guy

Thanks guys, its way new ground doing this bird, but the confidence builds when i get the talent like i see here stoking me on!
Guy, the white topcoat is Halfords appliance gloss white. These paints i swear by, and they give a great finish, even if they are rattle cans!

Thanks Andrew :) Yeah it is about time i painted his sucker huh lol, Its not mine sadly, eh Chris lol, if it were my choice id be painting another Red Leader as i love that bird, but its educational doing this!

Hi Lee,

Thanks again for taking this on for me mate :)

I know you would have prefered to have done another bird rather than Red 5 but it is looking great so far so I am sure in the end you will look back and think it wasn't such a bad choice.

I must say as well your work has been top drawer so far and I am really enjoying seeing this ship taking shape.

Your communication and enthusiasm has been second to none and more than a pleasant surprise.

Cheers Chris :)

Thanks Lee, its been a big help. My lack of experience has brought me many problems with my build, but its slowly coming together. :)

Well i began to weather her today, its been a nightmare as im truly under the damn weather, lots of snot inside the mask and all that LOLOLOL, yummy!
Anyways, its been an eye opener, so many variations in panel hue etc, its really tricky to get 5 looking right, so now i know where Bob and co really had to get there game faces on.
All weathering so far is via the airbrush, i didnt want to go too nuts with pastels just yet as im not too big a fan, but they will be used on the buttplate and here and there on the hull and wings.
All chip marks were shot through punctured holes in the masking tape, this makes for me at least a very scratched sporadic effect!
Latex masking became useful to wear in the nose and some areas on the hull flanks.
So far, i suppose she aint too bad for my first 5 (god i hope you like so far Chris lol) , could do with some opinions though, still a long way to go, but at least if im not on the ball i can go back and tweak!

Hi Lee,

Sorry to hear you have been under the weather hope you are feeling better soon mate.

I do like it so far Lee so no worries :)

I am really enjoying the weekly instalments of updates it is just incredible watching this come together. I have to be honest I knew the Studio Scale modelers on the forum put a fair bit of time and effort into their builds but never imagined the complexity of it all. The Studio Scale forum is truly the only forum of the RPF where I feel genuinely intimidated by the level of talent.

Keep up the great work Lee :thumbsup

Cheers Chris :)

That is looking FANTASTIC Lee! :eek:eek:cool:cool

I am ALWAYS amazed to see how different artists get their different 'looks' from their own techniques.

I REALLY LOVE the 'look' that you are giving this beastie my friend! It is VERY nice indeed! :D

Outstanding Lee! :D :D :D

Thanks Chris, im glad so far shes to your liking, like i said, i want to finish up the hull before the cans and wings so i knew my paint method would stand up on a 5 build.
Im going to get a bit more done on the hull in the AM, maybe get it close to complete, then styrene plate the wings, the leading edges are too bad to fill IMO, so ill go with a nice neat plate (thanks to Matt Meyer for the tip)
Im sure ill feel better soon, sneezing and snotting inside ones respirator is no picnic lol, glady i didnt take pics of that LOL.
Im thinking of swapping out the pilot for a Harrier figure, its what the studio builds used (apart from red 2 i think) so ill paint him up and see how that looks first.

Kurt, thank you, it stokes me on that you guys enjoy the progress!
