Vader ROTJ Saber

I've watched that footage frame by frame too, and most of the time you can't clearly tell just what Vader's holding. I do know this version had a fencing rod in it's Vader-saber incarnation. There's a pic around somewhere with a guy who visited the archives in the early 90's who's holding it with the rod still in place (before it got chopped). There's also one shot in ROTJ that shows a saber (or something) hanging from Vader's belt. Just not clear which saber it is...

The Vader ROTJ saber used to be Luke's ESB stunt saber, which is where the stub comes from. There is no screen footage of what we call the ROTJ Vader saber (since he doesn't wear it for some reason), at least not on the videos and DVDs. All I see in the fight is the Barbican saber, there are just too many shots that have it's details on the saber being used (especially the shot of the pommel that is clearly Barbican, no ESB D-ring or nothing.). At least that's what I see.

I have to disagree with you. I watched the whole fight scene on DVD frame by frame. Here's a few screen grabs I took. I'm not seeing a Barbican here...

Back on topic...I'd like to see MR weather this bad boy. :D

That's definately NOT the Barbican. You can see the activation box pretty well in that last shot. Very cool. Nice grabs, man.

dang, now that I'm almost done with my Vader ROTJ saber, this pops up...

I'll get this nonetheless, just to complete my OT Vader display. This will be the 3rd MR saber I will own.

Okay, at least SOME of the fight was filmed with the ROTJ prop. I agree with SOME because I JUST saw the ROTJ prop when he got knocked down the stairs, those shots you just posted, and the shot where he throws it at Luke (It looks WAY different in that shot and the blade's coming out of the WRONG END.). We really can't tell WHAT he's holding in most shots since both Vader and the saber are mostly black things filmed on a darkened set. But there are shots near the beginning and in the middle of the fight that show Barbican details, especially the shot of him parrying and you see the Barbican's pommel, that big black circle with NO D-ring.

I can't screencap for some reason (I only have the basic Interactive Video Windows DVD 4 on my other non-internet computer and Inter Actual player doesn't work entirely) and don't know how to so someone here has to find that shot.

BTW, how did it get the "Barbican" name anyway? And yes I'd like this saber more if they weathered it up more since they decided to go with the rivet holes. MR does like to go more for that "lightsaber" look rather than that "prop" look with MOST, but not all, thier OT SW lightsaber replicas, but this is the first time I've seen an in between version. If I get a Vader ROTJ at all (I like the ANH the best) I plan to get both a weathered version and a clean idealized version.

The saber got the name Barbican when it first showed up on display at the Barbican in London.

Okay :). I thought it was called that for something SW related, like the "Greedo Killer" Han blaster.

I am not a saber guy so if what I say is rubbish then please say so.

When the special editions were released or the release of TPM was released (sorry can't remember which) a lot of the UK actors were on a UK TV show being interviewed. Dave Prowse, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker were all on the show (that is the only ones I remember). As part of the show they had brought in souvenirs of their time filming the original trilogy. At the time I remember thinking that their souvenirs were not exactly spectacular Mayhew only had his script and I can't remember what Kenny Baker had. Dave Prowse has a light saber and as I remember he said it was the one he used in ROTJ he clearly handled it and it sat in front of him on a table in clear view.

Now my memory isn't that great and Dave Prowse may have been mistaken on what he had (as some of the actors have obviously come out with some clangers of information in the past).

Anyway my point is there seems to be great debate on what was used in ROTJ I think Dave Prowse may have this saber or a saber from filming. Maybe somebody else from the UK can confirm or deny if they saw the same show. Maybe somebody still has it on tape.

Possibly contacting Dave Prowse through his webiste or maybe if he is at one of the cons somebody could ask him if he still has this item.

Cheers Chris.

I dont claim to be an expert, but I took a lot of screen grabs and such and some of them show some pretty good details. Based on what I see here I've got my own theory that I wont put forth, so judge for yourself :)
I reccomend you save the pictures to your HD then zoom in on the saber in the pics, you can see some interesting details.

That fifth pic is what I was talking about.

why do people complain about the lack of weathering?

just sling it accross a gravel driveway and toss it down a flight of stairs... :rolleyes

I know it´s a little bit OT, but I think there was a SD version and if I´m not wrong, I think it had Vader cutted hand still gripping the hilt.

Does anybody have a pic of that SD version?

Thanks a lot

I didn't know MR was doing the Vader ROTJ saber.

I'll have a better look at it tomorrow at Comicon. It looked pretty good.

It doesn't look like an idealized version either.

Isn't it un-weathered and as such an idealized version?

I loved it from the pics - exactly what I wanted MR to make - but might be just me :D

Great photo. Thanks for sharing it with us.
