Urethane Casting Question

Silicone is the ideal mold for urethane as it will not bond with the urethane. I would still use a release agent because im paranoid like that but silicone will produce a good long lasting mold that will be able to handle multiple castings and hold its detail.

Can anyone chime in on what is appropriate to use to clean a freshly molded mask made of 40 shore urethane?
I recently purchased a cowl that has release agent still present in many areas and wanted to clean it up.

Hi all!! I have really enjoyed this thread. I am ALSO casting an atora (a horned cowl) out of urethane. I have silicone for the mold and reoflex 30 for the cast. I got smooth on's brushable mold kit and I'm going to use the smooth cast 325 for some other applications if I can't figure out how to paint this cast. I want to paint the urethane but I was wondering if there was another way to paint it other than ordering smooth on's color tint. Like maybe using plasti dip? Or another type of paint? I've seen other people paint casts with different things and even make casting materials differently. So I was wondering if there was another way. If not, I guess I'll just get the color tint. Cheers all!!

Hi Penny,
Rubber cement paint should do the trick if you are looking for something that will stick to urethane well. Just be sure to use an NIOSH respirator in a well ventilated area when using it. Just mix 1 part oil paint to 5 parts rubber cement. it's going to be super thick so you can use naptha or mineral spirits to thin it out depending if you want to do washes or not. Hope this helps

Thank you so much Scuba Bob!!! That is perfect. I have these things!! This area is still new to me but I'm always excited to learn a different way of doing things. Cheers!!

I've been reading this thread and it has been very helpful. I am thinking of making a Batman Cowl out of 40 shore urethane. I have been researching urethane and contacted Smooth-On and Polytek. Polytek doesn't seem to have a 40 shore and Smooth-On said that their EZ-Mix 40 was not recommended for applications that would make contact with skin. Can anyone recommend a product that will work for my idea?

Hi. Did you find a trustable store and urethane for making the cowl? I'm looking for the same thing, so I can order urethane and black pigment online. Thanks for your help.

Yes I used Vytaflex 40. Purchased it from Reynolds Advanced Materials. You can also buy it directly from Smooth-On. I created the mold using UltraCal 30 because I screwed up trying to make the mold out of Rebound 25 Silicone. From what I have researched the best way to go about it is to make the mold out of Rebound and then a mother mold out of UltraCal. What happened with my first go was the Oil Based Clay I was using must have had sulphur in it or some contaminate. With some of the left over Rebound I made a test mold using a water based clay and that worked much better. Anyway let me know if you have any other questions. I'm no expert but I've been experimenting a lot with this material lately. I can at least tell you what has worked and what I have screwed up lol

I have a question for you jmedina. Did you slush cast your cowl? And if so how was the fitting on it? Did you have to do any filling of areas?

Thanks for the info guys. You are great!
I see that urethane can be tinted, but there are few options so I'm wondering about what is the best option to paint a cured urethane piece?. I know that is very dificult to paint urethane, but maybe you guys know what are the best options to add color here. Thanks again.
