Probably paint a light color on the book. do a graphite trace over like most of the folks do for the U2 journal then use a pointed stylus to engrave the design.
I found (after destroying one book) that if you have a pointed tool you can press and drag it without damaging the surface to imprint what you want.

For the lines on the edges I marked off where I wanted them with a red Sharpie fine tip marker (it does show up on the black) and then I used a straight edge and pointed carving tool, dragging it along with enough pressure to indent the groove.

Also if you have a tool with a curved tip you can go inside on the spine and add the raised lines.

I took a picture of what I have so far.

On a side note, don't try to bend the cover to soften it up.
it will stretch the material and create wrinkles that you can't get rid of.

IIRC he used a dremel which I find damaging to the surface.

You could just paint it on or make a decal.

since the ones I'm planning to use have leather covers, I'll go slowly with a fine tipped wood burner or something on mine.

For the logo I think you can use a laser pen! I used that on a few things a while back for a weird project I was working on and it was amazing. You just have to make sure the pen doesn't burn the entire leather off.

That's an awesome looking map, indeed from the First game. Even says that it's made out of real leather

The logo can be done in metal foil, firstly you need to print a mirror image on a laser printer then transfer it with an iron onto the leather (quite tricky without burnin the leather but possible) then the paper is soaked off leaving behind the toner. then you need to use heat transfer foil for the final design. I believe something similar has been done on a harry potter thread here using a hot laminator instead of an iron, but this wouldn't be possible on a leather journal (obviously). what happens is the heat transfer foil just sticks to the transfered toner. sorry for not being more detailed, I'm typing on my phone

The whole thing is never shown only the edge.

What little is seen looks to just be another random page from Drakes writings about his voyages.
Some of the other pages talk about attacking ports on the Pacific coast of South America and other talk about firefly's and plants.

I spent some time looking for his actual journal entries but haven't found anything yet.

The back of the page (facing the missing Island Map) is a page (8?) of his Almanack.
Scans can be found on line.
I actually bought a copy of the reprint but the pages aren't any better then the scans found on line.
