Ultimate Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and progress inside!)

Greetings, everyone!

RaidenTyler here. I have been a long time lurker here at the RPF. First, I want to say that a lot of you inspired me to pickup the hobby of cosplaying or making costumes in general. This will be my first costume build and I decided to go with Ultimate Spider-man Suit.

I bought a pattern from the very talented Orhadar. He has been helpful in instructing me how to resize the pattern to my height. The pattern by default will fit anyone from 5'9'' to 6'1''. I'm 5'3''... very short for the default size. So there was work to be done.

Resizing the Pattern:

  • First, I measured the distance between the MIDDLE of the mask and the BOTTOM of the belt using the Ruler Tool in Photoshop.
  • The default distance of this is 29'' (for someone who is 5'9'' to 6'1''). And since I'm only 5'3'', I need to subtract 6''.
  • The way I resized the pattern was I went to Image -> Image Size. On the Document Size portion, I noticed that the Width and Height linked (when I change width the height changes too). I kept them linked because that's how they were sent to me.
  • The problem is, even if I subtract 6inches to the height, the distance between the middle of the mask and the bottom of the belt doesn't become 23inches. So I did trial and error until I achieved the distance of 25inches. I subtracted a total of 15inches from the size of the pattern. Please see the picture below:
Pattern Resizing.png

I decided 25inches because when I make the preview 100% and put my hand up against the computer screen to measure the gloves, I find 23inches very small for my hands. Even 25inches seems small to me. Or is that normal?

Please let me know if what I did was correct in terms of resizing the pattern. I want to be sure I did it correctly so people can refer back to this thread if they want to resize their patterns. And I also want the suit to fit me... And if you have any tips on how you resized your patterns, please let me know as well. I will greatly appreciate it.

I'm waiting for TJack to come out with the new lenses and faceshell combo. I will also utilize TrophyWife's services in having the suit sewn together. I will regularly update this thread when I make progress on my suit.

Thank you so much for your patience and attention.

Quick Update:

The pattern has been sent to Fabric on Demand to be printed. I went ahead and settled for the 25'' distance. My gut tells me that it should be okay. In the event that it doesn't fit me, I will sell the printed pattern or sewn suit and start over with a smaller size.

In the meantime, I'm still waiting for TJack to come out with the new faceshell and lenses. I'm also researching for good soles and how to attach them to the suit.

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

Orhadar has mentioned that he's willing to help out with re-sizing if you need, but I guess it's too late for that now. Best of luck with the sizing :)

Yep, he has assisted me in re-sizing the pattern. Although he did not re-size it for me, he gave me instructions on how to re-size it in Photoshop. He's been helpful, in my opinion. Given that he's busy and everything.

If the suit doesn't fit me, I will sell the printed pattern or sewn suit. But my gut tells me it should be okay. The pattern is now in the printing process. It should be here in about 2 weeks.

Cannot wait to see how this turns out :) good luck man!

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

Alright, so I haven't updated this thread in a while because as the lot of you may know, the waiting process for making suits can take a long time. But I have a few updates.

The pattern is still in the printing stage. It should arrived early next week. I'm also in a conversation with TrophyWife in regards to getting the suit sewn. I will be ordering the supplies she needs tonight so when the pattern arrives, it should be shipped to her ASAP.

TJack is also very close to releasing his new faceshell+lenses combo. The thing is the faceshell+lenses combo will be on a first-come first-served basis. And he will probably do a limited amount before he goes for his well deserved vacation. Knowing my luck, I may not land a spot on the run before he leaves for vacation. I work and have a family... I cannot be looking at RPF frequently. So if I do not get on the list, I may have to hold off a bit and wait until he returns.

I've also been looking for shoes that will go well with the suit. Does any body have suggestions for the soles? I want the suit to be sort of functional (be able to walk around town to take pictures and stuff). Kindly let me know if you have any ideas.

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

For the boots you can use title boxing shoes they come in red blue or black and they have flat black bottoms. You would start by cutting them down to the ankle height of a regular shoe and cutting out the tounge then make slits all along the bottom of the of the shoe. You would the. Tuck in the fabric and glue the fabric inside and it gives it a real clean sharp look

Thanks for the advice, you guys. It lead me to some ideas on what shoes to buy and use for the suit. I'm leaning towards buying something like these:

I think those are called Water Shoes or something. I'm uncertain if they're study enough to be walking around town for long amounts of time. Anybody have experience in using these for their suits?

More updates:

I received a confirmation that the printed pattern has recently shipped. It should definitely be here early next week. I also ordered the supplies TrophyWife needs to sew the suit. That has also shipped. So the timings are coming along nicely.

And the biggest blast is that I got into Tjack's new Faceshell+Lenses combo's 1st run! I'm so excited. You can find his JY thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f13/tjacks-amazing-spiderman-2-faceshell-lenses-combo-206110/

He makes amazing lenses and faceshells so I'm very excited in receiving mine!

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

Water Shoes can be rather flimsy (I think it depends on the brand and what model you get).

I am planning a Spidey costume too and I have been thinking about what I am going to do for the shoes.
I am not quite sure if it will work, but I was planning on basically inserting old toms (those canvas shoes that were really popular a few years ago) or a cheap pair of bobs (a rip off brand)into the feet of the suit and gluing them down.

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

Did you just scale it linearly? Or did you adjust each piece differently.

If it was the first, and I were you, I'd do a quick test sew of the hands as soon as your print comes in. The human body, unlike these patterns, does not scale linearly. So, pushing this pattern down to fit someone under 5'6" can easily result in the body, legs and arms fitting, but leaving the hands, feet, and head too small for a human being.

I'm not sure what Orhadar includes on his prints, but if he includes the long red stripes that many people leave off, you're going to want to use those between the fingers of the hand and palm pieces to give your fingers enough room to get in there. (In the case of a linear scaling) Feet and head, I don't have a solution for. So I hope it comes back and fits you perfectly.

Best of luck on your build.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at the shoes. Being that they're water shoes, they're only probably sturdy enough for swimming pool areas and such. But I'm not sure. I'm still looking for alternate more sturdy shoes. However, I'm not buying yet until I'm certain the pattern will fit me.

Thanks, Nick. Basically, Orhadar instructed me to do exactly the first post I did above. And yes, I did resize it linearly... The process I went through is on the first post. I'm not really well-versed in Photoshop to manipulate pictures and still retain quality. It actually took me several hours just to resize the file. I was very skeptical while doing it too. I actually just went with my gut and jumped the gun. And believe me, I'm still worried about the suit not fitting me... If anything, I'll discuss details with TrophyWife and see if she can adjust the hands and legs to fit.

Thanks again for the suggestions and help. I greatly appreciate it.

I've had aqua shoes on all my spidey suits and they've held up pretty well. Just try to get a fairly thick soul. Spidey4fun uses aqua shoes on all his suits :)

I see. I'll head next week to a sporting goods store and check out aqua shoes (so that's what they're called). I noticed they come in different sole thickness so I may need to check out thicker ones. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still looking for other alternatives as well so I have different options.

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

Also, if you sew them on (rather than glue them), you can always take them off when worn out and apply new soles.

That makes sense. I never actually thought about sewing them on (I don't know how to sew, but I can look it up so I can learn). And I think sewing them will be studier than just gluing them on. We'll see. Thanks for the advice.

Pattern Update:

The printed pattern has finally arrived! I'm completely impressed by the quality of the print. And my gut was right! The pattern dimensions are almost perfect to my body. I'm guessing it will be a little big, but that's okay instead of it being too small. I know I wont know if it's a perfect fit until the suit it sewn, but my worries of it being too are small gone. Whew! I'm relieved!

Picture time!

Here's the whole pattern. It's super vibrant and really awesome. The Lycra fabric feels good to the touch.

Here's a close up of the torso area:

Here are my hands against the glove parts. I'm satisfied about how close the glove size is to my hand.

I'm just waiting for the supplies TrophyWife needs and I'll contact her about the details on having the suit sewn. I'm even more excited now in having this project completed. But I'm taking my time and being patient.

Thanks for reading!

Quick Edit: The zippers arrived just now. If you're curious what type of zippers they are, they can be found here - http://www.amazon.com/Unique-Invisi...&qid=1392082101&sr=8-1&keywords=ykk+invisible

They're invisible zippers. They're not too expensive and they come in 3 per pack. So you probably only need to order 1 pack + shipping.
