Ultimate Mjolnir

All the parts are STILL done and ready for casting but I decided to concentrate on getting the vacforming table done. I basically have all the parts built, I just need to slap everything together, wire up the power to the oven and give it a few tests.

My timeline is to test the oven this weekend and maybe to some test pulls on scrap. If that goes well, I'll start casting forms for the hammer next week and MAYBE start pulling hammer parts the next weekend.

Maybe that's being optimistic but I'm definitely in the home stretch. No stopping now.

I finished and successfully tested the vacforming machine (pics on the blog). I have prepared all the parts for casting (hopefully this week or this weekend) and vacforming immediately after that.

I do plan to re-lathe the shaft. My first attempt really wasn't accurate enough (IMO) but this time I will do it in 3 sections so the molds will fit on the vacuum table.

I will post pics as soon as I get the first pulls (it will be the axe part.)

The SAGA of my progress...

Here is the new turning for the shaft. I got better at it and the wider top looks better next to the piece that holds the axe and the striker.

Unfortunately this was as far as I go before the motor on the lathe crapped out. Hopefully it will only be a few weeks for the replacement motor comes in...

The axe:

To preserve detail on the axe I made negative molds to vacuform into...

The pulls from each side (.06 styrene)

The axe sides trimmed out

The sides glued together. Assembled is pretty solid but squishy in the middle. The plan is to fill it with expanding foam...

A quicky paint job to see what it would look like. I'm about 70% happy with how it turned out. The edges are a bit rounder than I would like. I may have to go fiberglass on these parts...

More tests to come as I careen towards retirement :cry

Retire my ARSE... YOU RULE...

I cant WAIT to see this thing finished...

The project that wouldn't die.....

My plans for the final production ONCE AGAIN have changed. I have now decided to cold cast all the pieces with an aluminum / resin. In order to make it easier to cast, I needed to make the parts in halves. Of couse that meant RE-MAKING EVERYTHING. :cry

I bolted together laminated sections of MDF and threw them on the lathe. Much shellac, sanding & primer later, I've got the staff done.

Now for all the hard parts...

Damn....

Have you given thought to using sheet metal for the blade?

Not to sharpen it or anything, but I would imagine a big metallic or even hardwood lightning symbol as a die would form that into the metal with little to no problem....

That's gonna be one huge, and very awesometastic hammer when it is finished.

Chris

are you going to be selling a kit of this?? as i really want one and dont have access to a lathe or any of what you have

I am in the midst of making an ultimate Thor and was hoping you had finished this so I could see how it turned out.
