UK based Master Chief clay sculpt

Howdy Sevv, This costume thread is coming on in leaps and bounds matey and I am loving it :love. The symmetry is spot on and it looks amazing, how do you do it? I've struggled in the past to get pieces to match up correctly and it took me ages! You both make it look so effortless, You must have the patience of saints, OUTSTANDING!!!,

I have to say you are a true master of the master chief !! (y)thumbsup

I don't understand how you can do symmetry so well. Also, your lady-friend looks like someone I know.... but that's not possible. o_O

Thanks everyone!

Regarding symmetry... we hope we have achieved good symmetry. Sculpting anything as relatively quickly as we are, its very easy to miss very obvious issues. You can only really tell if you have achieved good symmetry when you cast the pieces in fiberglass and you are able to look at them from angles you simply can not whilst sculpting. We have only cast the helmet properly so far, over the next few weeks we will be casting the rest once the last armour piece has been moulded.

However for now im going to blindly hope we have got it all right lol.

The way we do symmetry. We just keep looking, measuring, discussing, eyeing parts... and just working and reworking and reworking till we believe its correct. No, actually watching / listening to hours and hours and hours of Due South is the key to good symmetry :D and keeping sain whilst doing all this.

As of last night... Done! Once again sorry for the crappy photos :( We put the first layer of silicone on last night aswell.

This second thigh has been hanging over my head for months... so glad its done. Definatly a record, one week for that thigh. We took 2 weeks to do the lower arms, using that logic the upper arms should take us about an hour... I wish! :)

More silicone tonight, we are going to start the upper arms (last piece! horray!) on Thursday.

Haha, I'm a fan of Due South. I've sat for too many hours to mention watching it, then watching the re runs, damn sheme it ended! Anyhoo back on topic, looking soooooooo cool matey, the symmetry looks bang on too me Sevv, hard to believe you did the second thigh in a week, WOW! your arms must be aching like mad dude. looking forward to seeing more updates. Quick question Sevv, how have you scaled/sized the armour ie to your bodysize, plus allowing for an undersuit etc? bit of a dumb question I know but I'm a tall dude but lack the muscle size, so I'll need to make a well padded undersuit to go with this costume. hope you get my meaning?

Thankee!

You did mention somewhere about padding up... any work on that section, or are you just concentrating on the plates for now?

This thread has never failed to deliver. Every time you update, I don't think my jaw can drop any lower, but there you go. This suit is going to AMAZING when you're done!

Cheers guys. I'll post more about the undersuit in a few weeks, when it's more... complete. When we've figured it out :)

Another weekend gone, they really do fly by lately. Well, weve continued to work on the helmet, tidying up the cast ... looking really nice. Weve pulled the chest back now aswell, again... good cast. We need to tidy the edges and work on the join before I can really try it on but its great to finally have one cast.

Big update this week though is the upper arms. Weve gone a slightly different route with these. As the left and right have many identical / symmetrical parts... we decided to break it down into pieces we could reproduce. The front, side and most of the back plate can all be created, moulded and mirrored to work on both the left and right.

So we made these:

Mould them / fiberglassed them:

Then, very quickly tonight I have... just for my own amusement really :) quickly placed them on our arm model.

Obviously on the final sculpt they will be bulked out... space wise, to more accuratly work with the proportions of the rest of the arm. They will sit better etc etc... you know the drill.

Over the next week we will place them in clay. Join the individual parts in clay... work on the small amount of details that arnt perfectly symmetrical... mostly the top of the back plate. Hopefully towards the end of the week we will have both upper arms finished ready for moulding.

Other news, weve finally... after all these years of searching *cough* No thats Aladdin... finished the hand plate. I must appologise for the shoddy photo, going to say it again :) We never take photos at sensible hours of the day lol. Going to mould this over the next week aswell.

Hope you like :)

EXCELLENT as always Jon, you have done some seiously hard graft there my friend and all in a week, I'm gob smacked!!!! just lovin your build:love

I absolutely love this build. I'm super jealous of your sculpting skills. I've never worked with clay but i want to start. You're such an inspiration and example of excellent work.

Excellent work on this Sevv, I've never seen anyone cast their shoulder/biceps parts that way. It's pretty time saving and innovative.. makes perfect sense too. Keep up the great work!

Cheers guys!

Thanks Sean, really respect your Halo costume work!

Update, these should be finished by the weekend.

Properly placed now, all clayed in. They look really big, bulky and really work well with the lower arms. The detail we couldnt replicate in fiberglass have been detailed up. Needs a good finish! However weve both given ourselves tonight off so we will be doing that friday :)

Spray silicone? How did you manage that? Seems like a very expensive luxury for what looks like a home grown project. Why not just brush on silicone or dirt cheap latex?

Update... lots happened since I last posted. All parts have now been sculpted, moulded and cast. The weekend just gone was spent sanding, definatly need some hand cream now :)

One picture I took on Saturday:

Really pleased with the sizing, fit and general presence of the pieces.

They still need some stopper, another sand and spray. Need a beer now :)

holy hell in a handbasket this just continues to amaze me. was showing this to a friend and he just sat there making a goldfish face at the work you've done. really looking forward to seeing this done!!!

Chief had his first outing at the Leicester Space Center on Saturday :) Really happy with how it all went. As im wearing it, I hadnt really seen the costume till I saw the photos from yesterday... I have to say. Im really pleased how how it looks. The size, bulk, proportions all work really well, everyone kept commenting on how tall, large I was... exactly what Chief should be! Larger than life.

As this was the first time I had worn the full suit at once a few parts needed to be mended throughout the day, mainly how the undersuit sits. Overall though it wore very very well! A few parts didnt stay exacrly in place... the toe for one lol it just wouldnt stay straight :) Ive already devised a better method for attaching the toe/foot so ill impliment that for next time.

The arse plate did sag over the course of the day. We will add the same strapping method as we have done for the cod. Should prevent the gaps on the cod/belt boxes you can see in the pics.

All to be expected really, I hope to make a few modifications for Memorabilia in 2 weeks. Of course, theres going to be on going changes for months but ill do what I can in the next 2 weeks.

I also hope to make some additions aswell as modifications in time for Mem, add some cross mesh on the stomach / back amoungst others. Its a shame, you cant make out the undersuit detail in these pics. Ill try to get some closer up photos next time I put it on. Anywho, pictures... taken with my fellow UKG stars :)
