UK bans the import of *anything remotely harmful*...

Shotguns are still legal in UK - I'm almost sure they do a lot more damage than a pistol

Yes but you need to be vetted for a licence for these, keep them in a locked cabbinet (hidden away), anyone who knows where the kes ar must also be vetted for, and obtain a licence. They are also rather large and are not easily carried arround in public. Unless you mess with them and they then become a prohibited weapon and no licence will allow you one of those!

Replicas need no licence and no real requirement is placed on the owners on what they do with them.

However it is once again the 'many' being pinnished for the actions of a 'few'. This results in the kneejerk reactions of polititions. Dunblane and Hungerford saw massive restrictions on legal owners of weapons and tightend up the licence procedure. Problem was that criminals never bothered with a licence anyway. Did it stem the supply of weapons to the street..... well no.

The good news is that it should still be possible to get replica items, I understand that customs / police will look at each item as an individual case. We will have to wait and see though. Many of the auction sites still are selling them so watch this space.

I realy want my Aliens Pulse Rifle, I still have hope.......

Gentleman and ladies, you live in a Police State. Orwell's vision of a Big Brother-run, all-power and invasive government is there. Remember the "Safe Beneath the Watchful Eyes" campaign, touting the benefits of surveillance on public transportation, whose photos so remarkably looked like something that could have been the cover of a paperback copy of 1984?

Sadly, here in the States, we are headed to a place every bit as bad as what you are now experiencing, governmentally. We're just a little further behind on the curve.

I tend to think the US is actually much further in front of us in this respect.

Time will tell.

I don't think we have anything left to ban :angry

Why is it Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world , but must have the most replica guns ?

Im not sure about immitation guns but airsoft is still popular in Jpan as long as its within the legal power limits.

They do have lots and lots and lots of samurai swords.:lol

Why does Switzerland have one of the highest numbers of real, fully automatic weapons in its households and one of the lowest crime rates in the world?

The curiosity of different cultures.
Japan also has one of the most violent, sexually explicit comics industries in the world, and yet their people are polite and restrained to (in American eyes) an absurd degree. Here in the US, violence in entertainment (movies, TV, video games, books and comics) is always under attack.

And yet whatever the "wedge" specific to its culture, every big government the world over is always trying to squeeeeze in a little more control of its citizens lives.

A bit off topic but I feel a need to clarify after reading some of the posts above.
Japan?

Sure you're not thinking of China (Hong Kong)?
Chine (mainland) & Hong Kong (island) has much higher crime rates compared to Japan. Hong Kong, during its colonial days, was like the Sicily of the East.

Japan also has one of the most violent, sexually explicit comics industries in the world, and yet their people are polite and restrained to (in American eyes) an absurd degree.
Two reasons behind this (IMHO):

1) A lot of that is for show to the outsiders. Orientals (especially the Japanese) are extremely concerned about 'saving face' (not being embarrasses) in front of foreigners. They will cover up ANYTHING to give a good front. Of all the crimes committed in Japan, a lot are not even reported due to fear of bringing shame and dishonour to the family, and then another good proportion are settled outside of the system, so as not to shame the government and the country.

FACT: The Japanese government rewrote their history books to cover up atrocities committed during the 2nd world war, resulting in a whole generation of disillusioned populace.

FACT: The Japanese government is JUST beginning to, after half a century, admit the existence of 'comfort women' during the 2nd world war.

In Japan, bullying has evolved into such an art form, both in schools and the workplace, that it is almost impossible to detect; again, due to shame and embarrassment by the victim of being labelled a 'weakling' if found out. The bullying can get so bad and so frequent that it often leads to suicide. That's why Japan has the highest suicide rate in the world. Since it is suicide, it can not be rated as a crime has been committed, thus the low crime rate.

Also almost all oriental women are basically brought up to be submissive, obedient, and tolerant(in Asia and South-East Asia at least), but this is take to the extreme on Japanese women. Therefore many many crimes against women in Japan were never reported, not even to close family members or friends. (I know this first-hand, ask me via PM if you want more info. Don't want to post details in an open forum).

2) The Japanese embrace their fetish for all things weird and different, instead of frowning upon it. This allows outlets for emotions and desires which would otherwise be bottled up in almost any other society. They have bars where legal-aged women dress up as schoolgirls to entertain those who have such fetishes. They even have vending machines from which you can buy used panties, etc.

The violent, sexually explicit comics is yet another way for the public to 'live' their desire on paper instead of through action.

All these, I believe, are what contributes to the low official crime rate.
