True Grit remake

IMO it's difficult to make comparisons between Jeff Bridges and John Wayne because their acting styles are so different. In the last two decades alone Bridges has created some characters on film that were so distinct and different that they almost made you forget you were watching Jeff Bridges. On the other hand, John Wayne...well, let's face it, regardless of the role he's still John Wayne, a persona he worked very hard to create and maintain.

When I first saw the ads, I thought it was a remake of the movie. I'm not usually into movie remakes, so thanks for clarifying that it's a new take on the novel. I think it looks great and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I like anything with John Wayne in it, but I have no problem with Jeff Bridges in the role. They don't seem anything alike, so it won't be like Bridges doing a Wayne impersonation or anything.
Zombie, I had a longer response typed, but I deleted half of it when I realized that you had already said it in fewer words.

True. I wouldn't compare the two. I do have to say I'm glad to see Bridges' career suddenly reignite out of nowhere. I just wish his dad was around to see it (and to play to add his odd humor to more films).

I just saw an ad on TV. Laughable.

John Wayne would look stupid in Tron and Bridges equals that in True Grit. The rest of the cast also looked second rate compared to the original.

Glen Campbell? Well... Wayne had a singer in many of his sixties movies. I guess someone thought it would make them 'hip' or something.
These days Campbell looks more like rooster Cogburn.

I am actually looking forward to this remake. Jeff Bridges has my respect as an actor, it's based on the novel and the Coen brothers are directing. They haven't let me down yet.

If it's not a remake why is it called True Grit? Sounds like a typical 'take a famous title and make up some crap' production. They could have easily made a cowboy movie without that name.

True Grit was a great movie with a great cast. They can't better it.

Because it's based on the book "True Grit" (duh...):rolleyes

Really, who doubts that Coens?

They ****ing rule!

AND the DUDE?

Seriously?

I think this movie looks awesome! But I thought both transformer movies were an abomination to mankind... so what do I know? :angel

Agreed. Why do people think this isn't going to be good?

Has everyone forgotten films like "Raising Arizona", "Blood Simple", "Barton Fink", "The Big Lebowski", "Miller's Crossing", "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and, not to mention, "No Country for Old Men"? Trust me, these guys are good at telling stories.

As much as I love the original True Grit (and John Wayne), it was a John Wayne movie.

This one is going to have more "grit" to it for sure.

You're not alone, pal. I agree, completely.

Well, they've had their clunkers too--Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, Burn After Reading. I know a lot of people like Blood Simple, but I barely got through 30 minutes before I changed the channel, and one viewing of Barton Fink was more than enough for me. And I know several people who didn't like No Country for Old Men; different strokes for different folks.

this movie was pretty much a straight ahead remake save for the ending. enjoyable enough though not as spectacular as i thought it might be. Oscar?...not too sure about that.

Every commercial I've seen has the same exact dialogue. So what's the point? You don't win an oscar for copying.

And this was Waynes only Oscar. He owned that part.

There were IMO several strikes against this film, all of which have been cataloged earlier in this thread.

Having just returned from seeing it, (and being a big John Wayne fan) I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed it. Jeff Bridges all but disappeared under the eye patch and beard. The girl playing Mattie was amazing - her scene with the stable owner was hysterical in its own way. And Damon (despite doing his McConaughey impression through the movie) easily exceeded Campbell's LaBeuof.

I thought it was great. I doubt it was word for word remake, as the script in this film was far more 'kings english' and using words, inflections of that time period. I totally agree with SmilingOtter's opinion of the actors in this film.

I just got back from seeing it and I have vote for "I loved it". I thought Bridges did an exceptional job, as did the rest of the cast. I have to admit, I almost didn't recognize Barry Pepper, even though his make up was very subtle (bad teeth, beard and some dirt).

Well worth the $13 for the wife and I.

Wes

I just got back from seeing it a bit ago, and albiet its been a LOOOONG time since I saw John Wayne's version, I loved it. Jeff Bridges was great as Rooster.
