TRON/RINZLER armor costume.

Its mostly the tools that add up...the vacuum forming table to build from scratch will be about $100 alone. Add all the electronics into that and its another $200. The fabric is a little expensive since there are only 2 people who make that style that i know of.

The spiky parts will be molded rubber, i may add some wire or something underneath to help retain the shape but other than that it will be heated and molded rubber. (the place i get it at it comes in different width's so i can get it pretty thick.)

What do you mean by molded rubber? I'm new to this stuff, and I'm taking on this project. I'm thinking about using L200 or Volara closed cell foams.

Also have you thought of merely glueing the rubber onto the suit? What are you using sew it on? Aren't you worried about the thread and eyeholes showing on the edges of the "armor"?

Thanks in advance!

yes now i understand what your saying. so pretty much the rubber is kinda like foam right? accept its a little more heavier and flexible?

@metalgreyfox i will be using L200 but i will be using a heat gun to heat up the rubber just enough to shape it into the shape i want then let it cool. Rubber usually has a tendency to stay the shape you mold it to when you give it a little heat and keep it at the designated shape long enough. (i have not tested anything with L200 just yet so i don't even know if it will work but thats my method i am going to try.)

As for the stitching showing when i sew the L200 Rubber onto the hex fabric i have not gotten that far yet. I will probably heat the rubber up again with a heat gun and let it expand over the holes...if it works...

@RINZLERTRON Yes the L200 Rubber i am using is just like foam but it has more density and weight to it. It should make it more durable for wearing.

I've been consider a similar process talked about for the last few posts (attaching rubber/foam to a suit). I thinking more along the line of a sentry, but I think it is applicable here.

Rez, mentioned the process I was considering, molding clay then casting parts out of that. However, unless I actually go through the hassle of baking latex foam it would be a rubber type material. Aren't the parts going to sag the suit?

weight could be an issue if your armor is too thick... with my costume, it will be slightly less that 1mm in most places and never more than 4mm. The more 3D elements will be filled with foam to cut the weight, and everything in between will be filled with permaflex silicone.

I have a bunch of the L200 in the thinnest size, but I'm doubtful that it will hold a heatformed shape over a mannequin. I'd love to hear it works (since I have a mannequin and a heat gun too)...keep us posted.

ok so sorry i havent been on latley guys.... i havent had much time to work on the suit do to things like me being sick, and it being to cold here to do anything. anyway ive got new pictures of the suit to show you so stay with me here and i will keep ya posted....
thanks guys..

ok ive got a question so please please please someone answer! how do you smooth out the glue on craft foam to make it completley even for the paint?

so here is a new picture of the armor. it is my updated rinzler armor, completley different thing than the tron armor. from this picture the left side looks a little un even than the right side, but trust me, its just the way the camera was looking at it. anyway, tell me what you guys think!

Hey, I've been following this thread for a while now. I became a member of the site just for this thread.

Good work on the costume. Thank you all for ideas and techniques.

I'm thinking of building a Rinzler costume too. For the base I was thinking:
Black Open Face - Full Body Spandex Suit - SuperFanSuits.com

I've ben thinking about the amor part of the costume to take a wetsuit, ideally rubber, and carve out the shapes of the armour and lights. Then using the rubber paint as you suggested to give it a deal and to better hold together.

Has anyone looked into that option?

sounds like a good idea. the only thing i would be worried about is that rinzler has lots of little tiny details. im not realy sure if a rubber wetsuit would pull that off unless there was something else you used with it to make the details. but, since it is a good idea, its worth a try! and thanks for the link to that website i might actualy use that for mine as well :)

so here is a new picture of the armor. ive just started on the thighs and arms. the thighs look realy big but its going to wrap all the way around the front of my thighs so it actualy isnt that big. anyway, ive started coating the chest with watered down glue ( thank you darthchiro for that!) but i still have a bit to do on the chest before it can be painted. here it is tell me what you think!

ok so tonight im gonna try to go get some plastidip to paint the first part of the chestpiece. possibly going to get some red orange reflective tape as well. i think i might order the undersuit as well soon and then get some of this paper i saw at staples that whatever you print off can be ironed onto clothes. im going to print off the hexagon pattern and iron it onto the whole suit. should work well. also need to get some strong glue or shoe goo.

Id stay away from iron on transfers. they are ugly. not only will the hexagons be printed on it, but so will the black background. and its thick layered and shiny
