Tron (1982) Kevin Flynn Red/Gray Jacket.

Jet, those jackets certainly look like a solid inspiration, but I'm starting to think this was a completely custom jacket. Primarily as those and other military jackets are thick, made out of a wool type of fabric

you may be right - but I just can't see Disney making a custom jacket and possibly two spares for the limited amount of time this piece of wardrobe was going to be seen onscreen. Adding to the fact that the budget for this film was being itemized toward the computer stuff. Heck, even the Tron helmets, discs and pads were all off the shelf items. For them to be looking at a budget list at everything they need for the film and come down to "Flynns Jacket" screen time: 4 minutes- (3 at minimum will need to be made) - $2000.00 --
that reads all wrong to me.

I 100% agree with you that those military jackets are wayy too thick, but (you may or may not remember) in the 80's military was in - parachute pants, desert boots, camouflage, and bomber jackets - so this cut was probably taken and made into the base jacket and sold at Chess King or Merry Go Round or something like that. I personally believe it to be off the shelf - but enhanced.

Oh, you could be absolutely right. It certainly LOOKS like an off the shelf jacket. If it was custom, it was very well made. And hey, you never know, they did a number on the Arcade set, custom Neon and posters and such. Who knows. Maybe I can get in touch with someone who costumed the movie, for a definitive answer.

EDIT: IMBD shows for costumers for TRON:
Eloise Jensson
Rosanna Norton
Lorry Richter (costumes: men)
Nedra Rosemond-Watt (costumes: women)

Anyone know 'em? :lol

Really great work on this nickytea.

As for the military jackets, it does look close.
I have one in a denim material.
They were used on Uboats.
I wanted mine to be like the ones seen in Das Boot but it's the wrong colour (A kind of olive/brown)
The one's posted look to be the wool versions.

I got mine from here...

The colour doesn't look the same as the photo though.

Can't wait to see more.

Did a fitting a few days back to make sure I was on the right track. Will move on the bottom band/zipper and lining next.

I wanted to bump this to see if we have any vintage Adidas experts. Trying to locate Flynn's shoes:

A quick update.
The clock is ticking, and I'm almost finished. I still have to make some alterations to make the collar sit properly. (I notice now that the collar is too small all together, but there's not much I can do about it at this point.) Also have to add the snaps.

Nice! Could you be talked into doing additional jackets? :love

Thanks!
I don't know about that, working full time, but I may sell this one down the line if I decide to make another. It'll be a while before I carve out the time again.

Brad, those looks VERY close!
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

Doubtful I can find a pair before SDCC, but these would be great to have for future Tron events.

Nice job. I think DavidYR1 was working on these years back, but got pushed by the wayside like a lot of projects.

In lieu of being able to find a vintage pair, I decided to just buy a new pair from endless.com. Price wasn't too bad ($45, a little more than I wanted to spend) but it came with free 2-day shipping. That really sealed the deal, knowing I could get them for the con.

to me it looks like the Nizza for sure its a little hard to tell at first i thought it was the campus 80's or p soles but neither of them have the vent holes on the instep

Well, I think I've done as much as I can do. This'll be great for Comic-con.
Added should pads, slightly adjusted the collar as best I could (it's still going to look best "popped up" like at the end of the movie), and finished all the loose seams. I still have a few snaps to add, but all the necessary ones are there.

Also got the shoes in!

And the obligatory action shot:

Excellent job, amigo. Sterling work.

Incidentally, I'm not sure if I am the guy you were referring to at the beginning of the thread. I'd hope not, as I had this jacket made for me - by a professional seamstress who worked for Disney - and it's fairly accurate, I'd say.

Hello, and thank you!
I meant no insult, but yes, yours was the jacket I referred to initially.
Your seamstress did beautiful work, the finishing no doubt far exceeding my amateur abilities. There are, however, a several inaccuracies I saw in yours that I sought to avoid in the making of mine.

I assume they must have used the one closeup from the film that had been reversed, as the red zipper and closure are reversed on your jacket. Also, it was only with the HDnet transfer that I was able to make out the proper shape of the waist closure and curved collar. I was also able to observe that the front pockets are without snap closures, and the lower back was not gathered with elastic as it appears on yours.

Still a beautiful jacket, but as with so many things, as new reference becomes available, details have light shed on them.

I need to take another crack at this myself, as I was never happy with the way my collar sat.
