I'm looking into doing this jacket.
Only ever seen one replica, and it was pretty far from accurate, being mostly based on a screencap that was actually FLIPPED in the movie itself.

Trying to breakdown where all the seams are before I start:

Anyone ever attempt this jacket?

looks like a name or some sort of writing at the bottom in red?

His left as wearing, or our right as looking at the pic.

I have a feeling that this is a custom made jacket. I don't think I have EVER seen anything that looks remotely close to this.

How about that hair?!!!

I had a few jackets in the 80's that looked ALOT like this! LOL!

I would really like to see a better pic of what looks like a logo followed by a name... almost looks like the logo is a pair of wings followed by a word.

Even if this is custom... there is something there that I can't make out by zooming in on the above pic!!!

ANY HIGHER RES (LOL) PICS?

Do you mean the zipper, or am I just not seeing what you are talking about?

It looks like a logo and name to me... in RED. Maybe it is just a zipper? I have looked at that pic as zoomed in as poss on different monitors... can't tell what it is! If you know for suer that its just a zipper then never mind...

Any higher res pics out there?

in the third pic you can clearly see the zipper, so, no logo to try and find sadly. Which might lend support to it being a custom

UPDATE.

Got the sleeves and collar on. Need to start working on the waist band and the lining/facing.

Alright,
I need some opinions on the closures ...

FlynnJacksnapCU.jpg

It's clear that the topmost here is a SNAP, as it rests on the top lying part of the jacket, and not under lying (as a button would.)

This leads me to believe that the closure below it is also a SNAP, as they look the same.

Now, the two bottom closures look different. This could be lighting, or they could in fact be BUTTONS.

What do you think?

To me they looks like buttons, and you are doing a wonderful job on this.

Thanks man.
I think they look like buttons, too. It makes sense to me. I feel like a few buttons at that part of the jacket would be more structurally sound while your wearing it. With snaps, you'd take a deep breath and POP. Maybe not with three snaps, but they look bigger to me. Like buttons.

i think there snaps, mainly cause the way there positioned would make it a tad tricky to button, and in the early 80s everything closed with either a zipper or a snap.

and unless your breathing from your ombisure then the snaps wouldnt come undone(i only do that cause i was in band for 5 years and trained myself to), and he was pretty thin in thins movie

and if you look at some old 80s wind breakers there was usual a bit of elastic in the back to make it tight and give it some stretch, it would be in the bottom on the inside of the jacket and would make a bit of a rumple
so i wouldnt be suprised it this jacket had that going on in the back

You know what, I'll probably just make them all snaps for the time being. The one's I have are somewhat removable after the fact. (More so than an absolutley not removeable button hole. :lol)

The snaps I have now are just plain rings, which I may have to live with until I can find some gray capped snaps, or just some grey caps I can fashion on top.

As for the back of the jacket, all the ref I've seen suggests that there is no ruffle in the back, but the "puff" is the result of four tucks (or, what is the word? pleat?). Two in the back, two in the front. I'll try and post some of those reference pics.

i think the reds were added to make the jacket pop but the grey base is based on vintage military (which would make sense coming from the 80's) - something like these: the third down being the closest with the dropped v collar as well as the waist wrap

i wouldn't be surprised if they took a military jacket - added snaps to the wrap as well as the reds to get the hero to stand out more onscreen during the real world scene.
There sleeves actually remind me of the one simon lebon is wearing here

the work you've done is outstanding Nick - let me know if you make more of those puppies.

Jet, those jackets certainly look like a solid inspiration, but I'm starting to think this was a completely custom jacket. Primarily as those and other military jackets are thick, made out of a wool type of fabric. Flynn's windbreaker is almost definitely some kind of light synthetic.

Very interesting how close the ideas are, though. The overlapping bottom especially.
