A couple of years ago I did a big update to this droid, but I never shared it here. It all started when the lenses were found inside the Paterson Trident Viewer. Once that part was found, I went down the rabbit hole of scaling the head to the lenses.
Which led to modeling a new neck for the droid.
Rebuilt the whole head as my original eye boxes were slightly too small.
I also replaced the PVC and ABS mast with an aluminum one. Which meant I needed to redesign how the head turned right and left. The servo was replaced with a planetary gear motor, and I used a smaller diameter aluminum tube to mount it inside the mast.
Here are some shots of the new mast with the arms reattached.
I was also inspired to upgrade the drive system. I added sprockets to the inner part of the drive wheels and used a small 3D printed button that acted like a tack guide and as a sprocket for the tracks. The old fan belt inner track guide was removed from the larger blower belt.
The original friction drive was very finicky, and the addition of sprockets just made the whole drive system more reliable. Here is a video of the drive in action.
I took the finished droid out to Death Valley for a few final shots in a more Star Wars like location.
