Nicely done so far! I've been plotting a Grimlock (somewhat G1, with touches of War For Cybertron's design mixed in), and I like the method of attack you're doing with this build! Rock on.
Great work so far are you doing it all free hand I would love to have a bash at a optimus prime but bit baffled about where to start, was thinking about basing it on a gundam and then free handing the finer details as I know there are templates and guides for gundams
Oh man, I'm sorry I've not checked in. Looking great and I love the idea of the Glowspecs. Might have to look into those.
I'm using that type of LED strip from my 'WfC' Optimus build because I am much more satisfied the the brightness and power consumption of LEDs over EL wire. Unfortunately, if not diffused correctly the LED strip will end up looking like dots like you feared. My early tests here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=499337136819481
With a bit of adjusting I was able to diffuse it better. Not perfect but it works well enough for me: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=499680170118511
And they are powered by two 6V batteries, which when I tested them (all 5-metres of LED strip) lasted 12-hours with no discernible dimming with PLENTY of juice left. Those more proficient than myself will more than likely have a better and more compact battery solution.
thanks man i ordered the strip alreadyand im sure ill find a way to make it work im glad to hear they last a long time is there an alternative to the 6V batteries they look really bulky i managed to store a small 12v in my iron man suit maybe i could use something simular for this. how did you go about diffusing the light it really looks great?
Oh yes the 6V batteries are definitely big and cumbersome but my build has a lot more room for stuff like that. Later down the track I may look into something lighter. THere are things like sealed acid batteries or something along those lines (again, those more knowledgeable than I will know better) and are rechargeable I think. Certainly lasts longer than a series of AAs or a tiny 12v battery.
The LEDs on the tyres are diffused by a strip of foam gap filler rod ( Gap Filler Rod Moroday 10mm 5m White Mgf2 1-81219 I/N 4061881 | Bunnings Warehouse ) inside of a clear tubing, which has been sprayed red using the type of stuff you use on the tail lights of cars. Part of the tubing has been sliced off on the hidden side in order to give a clear light to the foam. The other lit up parts of him will have plastic plates and a clear type of flexible kitchen chopping mat I found to diffuse.
yeah I saw on facebook it looks great man moving in this one is a bitch I think I like your way of building with the puppet arms a lot better honestly this ones legs flop around to much and I don't really have the forearms attached I just wear hockey gloves and it kind of hold them on
Can you use 9v batteries or is that to high?Oh man, I'm sorry I've not checked in. Looking great and I love the idea of the Glowspecs. Might have to look into those.
