Torchwood is back!!! Starts tonight 7/8/11 on Starz - SPOILERS

I thought it was pretty good. Definitely a "character driven" series, which is fine if you know it going into it. I personally would like to see them go back to the original formula that worked in the first two seasons: a team of pseudo government employees tracking down weird stuff week by week. Throw in a season arc for good measure.

I don't even mind if they do it in America, it's the characters that count, and the fact that they're in "the doctor" universe.

Now we'll NEVER get rid of Rex.
I don't know, RTD seems to have no problem slaughtering main characters of the show at random times.

I could see episode 1 of next season (if there is one) starting out with REX getting stuffed in a Houdini water death chamber and left for the entire season (flashing back to him once every episode to show him waking up and re drowning just for dramatic effect) .

Think of all the terrible **** he did to Jack over the first 3 seasons (he was actually a bit easy on him this season):lol.
  • Buried in the ground for a few hundred years (this one freaked me out)
  • Bomb surgically implanted and blown up
  • Encased in concrete
  • What else???
Now there is an extra immortal that he can torture and unlike Jack can at random say "miracle is over" and kill him off in some terrible way.

I have to admit, I think overall RTD came through. A few parts of the series were fluff but there was enough good material to keep me wanting to see the next episode each week. I think the last episode tied it together better than I was expecting and was well done. It felt mor like Torchwood than most of the rest of the series.

I personally would like to see them go back to the original formula that worked in the first two seasons: a team of pseudo government employees tracking down weird stuff week by week.

Totally agree, It think they could easily salvage the series if they went back to the old formula.

Do agree with those that view this series as the weakest. Bill Pullman was miscast and misdirected as the villain, if pushed he could have gone deeper and nastier. Watching the series, the common questions were why didn't they do this or that, the script writing wasn't as tight as it should have been, nice to see Torchwood, but next time do a better job.

One thing I didn't like is the absolute fanaticism of those working for the families. It doesn't really make sense. That those people working for the families are so willing to strap a bomb to themselves and kill themselves for the family is hard to buy unless there is a specific reason for it. In most cases, people are going to be willing to kill for a cause, but they aren't necessarily willing to commit suicide for a cause. If there is, there's got to be something to the cause that inherently brings out a level of fanaticism that just wasn't here as far as I could tell. Newman killing himself, the soldier with the blood killing himself, there were others I guess. It just doesn't make sense WHY they would do that.

Well.. With Newman that's easy - they could probably do something worse than death to him (torture, get him excilled from his job, etc.).

The others? The way I figured it is they were offered a way out (I.e. Kill yourself and you don't have to live in a world plagued by The Miracle) - I think plenty of people would be willing to go that way.

For others, it was just the promise of power/money for their surviving friends (what it usually is).

Re: Torchwood is back!!! Starts tonight 7/8/11 on

People aren't going to be interested in power or money for their friends if it involves having to kill themselves. The only thing that might do it is the Family threatening to do horrible things to the suicider's relatives. If at least they said that, I'd buy it. But really, it doesn't wash how people are so quick to kill themselves for the Families.

Re: Torchwood is back!!! Starts tonight 7/8/11 on

They've had YEARS to do extensive profiling on anybody they hire as spies so I think it's easy enough to say they found people willing to die 'for the cause'. It's really not as rare as you might think - some people are just looking for an excuse.

If you agreed with what they were doing (as Julie did) and you were committed to bring it about, then killing yourself 'for the cause' isn't so hard to believe. Yeah, you're not going to be around, but in your mind you're doing it 'to make the world a better place'. You're likely to do it if you have nothing to loose or everything to loose.

Also, just as Newman implied, if you fail even worse things can happen to you.
