Top coating metallic paint

I have been using Krylon's "Original Chrome" and love the look. Unfortunately it is prone to scuffing and scratching.

Every top coat I've tried (Crystal Clear, Auto Top Coat, spray lacquer) absolutely dulls and clouds up the appearance to where it looks like galvanized steel.

Anyone have a recommendation to solve this?

I think you've pretty much exhausted any top coat I would've used, however, what about a clear varnish? I know it's known as a lacquer, but a wood lacquer may have different properties? Maybe more gentle than an automotive type paint?

Frankly, I have no idea, it's just a suggestion.

Good luck,

Kraig

as far as I have ever seen or heard, no clear coat will work on those spray chrome paints. You may try a light coat of wax.

Yep I agree. I try rub and buff and then wax over that. buff up, bingo. Thing is it will also scratch if it's too deep with you.

I also agree............clear top coats will dull your silver/chrome metallic paints. Avoid them.

I would think that an acrylic based top coat might be fine. Usually they are alcohol based so they might not react with what's underneath. Still I'd test it first.

Crystal Clear is an acrylic but did the same thing. I think the next step is wax...I take it automotive wax is what I need to use?

Yep, I've used Futura floor wax with decent results. As mentioned above, don't put the coats on too thick...it will definitely dull and turn yellow over time.
