Fertility Idol Gold paint

Hi fellow makers.

I have 3D printed off a Fertility Idol, and now I am having trouble finding a gold paint that matches the movie prop.
There is just something just "off" about the Gold paint I used. I used Green Stuff World Chrome Metal Antique Gold, which looked perfect in the bottle and when I put some in the palette, but once on the idol, looked "off" and not the tone I was hoping for. Airbrushed it over a matte black primer.

Am i being pedantic? does it look fine and passable to you guys?
I plan of doing some weathering once it's dry and hopefully i can get a better look from it.

Thanks
Wookiee

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I did some experimentation, here:

With my idol, I'm going to try the fluid from these gold markers in my airbrush. I was able to drain them pretty easily:

May I ask how you ended up orienting and supporting your print? Looks like I have a lot of sanding and filling ahead of me!

Thanks!
Bill

The 3d print was the test print on my new Saturn 3 Ultra, it was oriented at a 20 degree angle with the face upwards, it did require a little sanding and filling to fix some damage from the supports, but came out pretty good considering. I'm doing another one soon and I will change the supports a bit and hopefully get a cleaner result.

How does the Gold look to you?

If you're hoping for a shiny gold, a gloss black primer is a good way I guess......but I don't know exactly what you're looking for !!!! Maybe a gold plated Idol ???

The Gold I have painted is shiny, that's not the problem, it's the colour of the Gold that I'm having issue with. Was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a colour matched Gold paint/brand that looks like the movie prop.

Yes, that's why told you "gloss black" primer instead of "matte black" primer.........it could help to begin with !!!

Honestly, I would do gold leaf and apply with adhesive. It seems messy at first but the cost is pretty equivalent to buying good paint and then it is radically cool.

Yeah, the color seems a little sandy gold to me, like Iron Man Mark 42 tan/gold. I noticed the same thing when I was testing Green Stuff World as well. I didn't like it at all.

Upvote for gold leaf, which is very easy to apply, but I think smoothness is one of the tradeoffs there.

You can try some gold rub-n-buff. You coat the idol, then buff the hell out of it. It will shine up top areas nicely, and leave the duller areas in the recessed areas.

Kroenen77 is correct: I’ve done many idols over the years (mostly resin based) and the best gold color I’ve come across is Tamiya TS21. If you’re thinking of trying gold leaf you could reach out to Kevin926. He did a fantastic idol project last year.

Yesterday at the Great Prop Swap in California I met a guy who had a pretty decently convincing gold on his idol. This was his process:
  • Primer
  • Rustoleum Gold
  • SprayMax 2K High Gloss
  • Light dusting of Alclad Gold
As such, it's not completely protected anymore, but the shine was authentic to my eyes! Regret forgetting to take a photo!
