Tomb Raider Reborn

Having the shafts a little long also helps you from burning your left hand when the arrows you're shooting are on fire...

Starting next week, I'm done with school, and finally have time to get back to work on my costume, woo!!!
 
Well since all of the weapons that Lara uses in the game are scavenged from other players, I doubt that the arrows are scaled to her body size. after all, the bow and arrows weren't brought with her to the island... they came from a dead body already on the island. So the length of the arrows is kind of a moot point as she is using whatever she can find and making it work.
 
The only reason I brought up the issue was because lady nerd was having issues with how her quiver sat on her back. The arrows tended to spill, and the strap wandered. I just noticed that the arrows were long - in comparison to her quiver depth. The arrows (when I look at the pictures), will continue to spill out when walking unless the quiver is remade, or something is done about the arrows. She probably already sized up her arrows correctly to her draw length, but the quiver was a separate construction.

It's true.. you almost have to make the arrows way short on purpose (thus making them practically useless for anything but a prop) in order for them to fit in the quiver properly and stay put on your back.

I experimented with putting a strip of Sintra board about the size of a popsicle stick in between two layers of the webbing of my sling at the shoulder point and molded it to my shoulder so that it can't slip around or work it's way down my back. I did that mostly because I also have the shotgun hooked on there and the weight was a bit too much for it to stay up where I wanted it. worked great. :)
 
Just got an Ice Axe (real one)
Had to get it from the UK since all the US sources seemed to have dried up, should have bought one 2 years ago when I first IDed it.:facepalm
Got it from Cotswold.
Took about 8 days to process and 6 days from England to California.

I originally tried a place in the US but after a month and no replied to emails I put in a dispute with paypal and got a reply and my money back the next day.

Some places may still may have the hammer head version which can be replaced with the Adze plate (if you can find them)

For those that have the resin ones or have made your own it's a dark red (translucent and glossy) and the blades are a dark gunmetal (also glossy).
Main grip (grey plastic) has a rubber coating (black) and the adjustable part is plastic (black) all fasteners are silver.

If anyone needs detail photos let me know.:thumbsup

How's it weighted? The one thing I always worry about with resin props is how the weight distribution compares to the real thing. (I know most people just want to minimize the weight as much as possible but I like having it feel realistic as I swing it.)
 
If you hold it by the center loop in the handle the lower part of the handle will sit horizontal with the head hanging down.
Pretty well balanced at the center but it does feel top heavy when holding it by the grip.
 
I have a real one and did own Jenn Croft's resin one before I sold it. The real one is MUCH heavier. Jenn's are light as a feather. That being said, I'm more than willing to take the weight of the real one. :)

I fashioned myself a one piece pick and adze for it out of Sintra for Cons, so I can switch the real ones out for that stunt set whenever I'm not climbing :p

Haha, I was actually gonna ask about Jenn Croft's in my post but then I decided not to single it out. I'm not sure if I'm buying one of her blanks, making my own, or taking up rock climbing to justify the cost of the real deal, but if I go the prop route I'm probably slicing it open and filling it with heavier substances.

jenn's is totally worth the money if you want a lightweight prop for cons. I loved mine, and the only issue that i had with it was that it is somewhat vulnerable to extreme heat.

But since I do alot of hiking and climbing in the real world, I eventually wanted a real one, and so i decided to get one. It was NOT easy to find. I had found that Gear Express still had them on their site and paid for one, but then found out that it was on permanent backorder because DMM has discontinued the Rebel. BUT... they did manage to find a demo for me that had a few scratches on it (totally fine with me) for a DEEP discount and they even sent me a NEW Adze AND Hammer attachment for it so it was an awesome deal!

Bottom line.. if you wanna play with it alot get a real one IF you can find it and IF you are rich. :p If not, get Jenn's cuz it's awesome as hell and is much lighter and cheaper.
 
To help prevent warp in the resin ones it might be a good idea to cut a groove in the thicker parts and insert steel rod then putty over them.
I don't see why they couldn't be cast with a rod (or 2) in place already to prevent warping.

Ideally for Con purposes having one in heavy foam like the stuff used for blasters would be great.
I forgot the name of the company that makes them but I believe they are located in LA.
 
That could work. Really the best way is to get a real one if you can and make a Sintra stunt blade for it for Cons. that way you get the sturdiness of the handle with a Con safe blade. And you can always put the real blade back in for real world adventures. But that IS the spendy route...
 
I talked to Jenn about reinforcing hers with a metal bar or something, but after getting one in my hands, it would be difficult in the areas where it really needs it (the blade). Also the one that I'm having trouble with may not have been cured correctly, so I have some work to do there.

I may end up just CNCing a new blade. We'll see how much time I have to figure that out.
 
Hey all! So I'm down to the wire, 3 days before my film shoot, but I thought I'd pop by and share my necklace! I did pretty fair job with just plain clay! I used TheLadyNerd's photo for a reference as I like that version not the official prop one! I have about 3 (because when shooting film you must ALWAYS have a back up!) but here are the best ones! The pendents got smaller as I got better at making them. The final one just just a tad larger than a quarter and I really like that size. Will try to share pictures of my final costume! I had to go with a more modern gun holster as this girl will be packing 2! :)
 
holy f-ing crap Ladynerd!!! i haven't been to your thread for a bit just saw the pics you through up and DAMNWOWDAMN!! like you said aside from a few tiny tiny things you are spot on, look just like her only better since you know your real. Love it, just love it you kicked this costumes ASS!!! and now after playing the game and loving it i might with your permission make one of those pics my comps wallpaper.
 
Hm, sounds a quiver overhaul is in order. Either that or I may just commission you for one Kristen Anne. :) (I tried to make a second one, but it actually looked worse than the one in my pictures. Go figure. I shouldn't be trusted with propmaking without supervision.)

Not sure if I'm going to have a pick-axe for Dragoncon. Truth be told, I'm not sure whether to take my costume farther into the game in terms of distressing and more props. Or if I should stick with what I have (as I've seen many TR cosplayers going the fully distressed/torn route). Might be different to be a costume from earlier in the game. Though I'll definitely be updating some of my gear at the very least.

Nice pic of the quiver texture and colour.

If it's leather (which is very believable now), it doesn't seem to have a heavy grain to it (you can see the fabric textures on Lara's grey and white tops).
