Tomb Raider Reborn

WHAT?! March?! Holy cow....well, on a positive note that gives me a few more months to prepare. Though I wonder what the holdup is.

Glad to hear you found a pair of boots Lizard Jedi! I'm still hunting for mine.

I have a bow!

Untitled by LizardJedi, on Flickr

Sorta. Just finished this tonight. Bows look weird when they're not under full tension.

I think in the pictures the bow is made of many small reeds... this is made out of 3 (green) sticks. There are still a bunch of nubs and throny pieces that I may cut off later.

I also am without a real camera at the moment, so I'm stuck using my ipad for picture... so I can't get one of me drawing it... eventually hopefully maybe.

While I was at it I took a picture of a boot...

As I said before not perfect, but shoes are almost always the hardest part for me. Now I just need to break them in (which is more annoying than it sounds, I'm totally a minimalist-shoes person, and its flip flop weather now. Plus I usually drive barefoot, driving with these things is a task in itself, lol)

Next step: holster!

Probably a bit late on the discussion here (but being new, this thread only just popped up :p) thought I'd give my 2cents in regards to the boots:

I did a few years in cadets, which caused me to go into an interest of army/militaria gear -- and most current army boots (which I've seen) don't have heels that large. Which makes me feel that these boots may have been 'custom' designed for the game / character from a combination of fashionable boots and classic hiking/militaria boots.

The boots "Lara" has in the games (or at least, the videos shown thus far) have hooks at the top for the lace (possibly eyelets further down, near the top of the foot - as some boots have) but I've never seen boots go that high (looks like 1/3 ~ 1/2 way up her rather long legs) in a military/hiking-style.

LizardJedi is right in saying they look similar in style to the WW2-style boots.
In short: I think it'll become a trade-off for one acurate element against another. You might get lucky though, and if I spot anything in my journeys that looks close, I'll be sure to post here :)

The bow looks pretty fantastic so far Lizard Jedi! I like the homemade feel to, feels more accurate.

As far as the boots go, earlier in this thread I believe it was mentioned the we do know the exact boots that were used in the game. Lara's boots are modelled after the Timberland Charles Street boot. Sadly, they are pretty much nigh impossible to find at the moment as they were available a few seasons ago.

Not sure how I missed that -- I was pretty sure I read through all the posts before adding my 2cents. My bad :confused

Then there's the boots. Those bloody boots! I did make a breakthrough in finding out that the exact boots used in the game are Timberland Charles Street boots (and a lot darker than I was expecting. Can anyone tell exactly what colour her boots are? They seem to change colour in every shot due to the lighting).

There it is! (Sorry, I had to dig for it too.) Hope it helps. :)

I'm still getting stuck on the pants route. I'm beginning to think they don't make the right colour/fit of cargo pants for my size. I can find them in anything BUT my size! I did find these fitted pants today, though now looking at the concept art and trailer/gameplay, I think they're too green and tight in the legs. *sigh* (Forgive the quality of the photos, I couldn't turn the ISO up any higher on my camera)

What do you guys think?

Ah well, I'm still going to wear the heck out them. They're very comfy!

Still working on finding the tank top. Can anyone find a good ebay link? I'm finding nothing in my local Goodwill stores.

Those boots look fantastic. On the pants, have you considered getting a lighter color pair and then dyeing them to the proper shade?

Thanks! I adore those boots, even if they're not the screen-accurate ones. (I find I like the taller boots, I think they're more flattering than the mid-low calf ones she has in the game) Alas, they're actually too small for me. (I could only wear them long enough to take these photos before my feet start seizing up). I'm currently searching for a replacement pair.

I have, but I still haven't found a lighter pair that fit either. The closest I've been able to find are the pair of pants in the very beginning of this topic. But I got them back before the gameplay/trailer was released (I was basing it off of the concept art).

Hmmm thinking, maybe if you got a hold of Aelynn or Izzie, they might be able able to help you configure a pattern to get your own pants made. If you have seen what they did for their Rapunzel gowns from tangled, you'll know what I mean. Then again knowing how busy those two are, they might not want me to suggest that to you. But it is an idea.

ETA: On the boots how bad a size difference is it? There are many shoe repair places that can stretch a shoe or boot half to a full size depending on the shoe/boot. I have a pair of Wellingtons, I needed just the right one stretched because I had broken my foot. It took 3 days and only cost me $20.00 and it fits properly now. What you want is an old fashioned shoe repair shop, the kind where they make their own lasts. They are capable of fully tearing down a boot or a shoe and rebuilding it. You might have to get a pair of lasts made for your feet, but once they are made you can have them modify any shoe or boot for you as they will have your proper size on hand.

Greylocke - I have been musing on that, but I imagine it'd cost a pretty penny to have a pair of cargo pants custom made (in truth, I was hoping to have a lower budget on this costume).

It's a bad size difference on the boots. I did go to a cobbler and have them professionally stretched (along with a host of other things to try to make them fit), but they're just too small. There's just not enough material to work with the length/width of my foot (it's even too small in the calf! And you can see by the photos above, my legs aren't exactly hams). They're a 5.5 UK (which was mislabelled on the ebay ad as a 7.5 US, when in actuality it was a 7 US, which is way too small for me.) I normally wear a 7.5 - 8 US. Right now I'm trying to figure out whether to look for a 6 or 6.5 UK in the same Timberland boots.

Parus Major - Thanks, but I'm definitely set on Timberlands (either the ones I have above or the actual Charles street boots from the game). Thanks though! :)

I don't think it would cost that much especially if you cut most of the pattern yourself. All you would be really paying for is having them sewn together. That way you could get them exactly the way you want them to look. Example link: Simplicity 3880 from Simplicity patterns is a Threads Collection - Pants sewing pattern If you take an existing pattern and modify it to what you want and cut out the pieces yourself, either sewing it yourself or having someone sew it for you shouldn't be that expensive.

LadyNerd,
I am having problems right now trying to find pants for my daughters costume. At 13 she is a skinny little thing, so nothing fits properly. What I would suggest is finding lighter close-enough pants, one size larger, and have them tailored to you, and dye them to match.

What is wrong with using the concept art as one point of departure, and later securing pants that suite your current needs? Maybe along the philosophy that guides recreating a DaVinci machine based on his sketches. But nice job, and nice passion for your subject. The world needs more of that everywhere.

Well, Comic Con was last week, and I finally cobbled together a costume...

Can't really see the boots... I kinda failed at the taking pictures thing...

For the top shirt, I got an American Apparel "spaghetti tank"... Baby Blue I think

One of my many anatomical problems is I'm kinda tall, and even an XL shirt is kinda short but oh well.

The white undershirt is one I already had.. from a multipack at Costco. Fancy.

The pants I got were Dickies cargo work pants. They aren't 100% correct (the pockets aren't exact) but finding pants that fit me is a major pain (I have huge buff thighs... Straight leg jeans are my skinny jeans...) This is probably the exact opposite problem you have but maybe they'll work for you?

The boots I've posted pictures of, but heres a link. Mortorcycle boots! Actually kind of comfy, just too bulky to drive in, lol
Xelement Men's Nubuck Distressed Brown Leather Logger Boots

The bow and the pick thing I made... out of sticks recovered from my parent's backyard renovation :) The knife on the pick is also made of wood... I didn't want to use a real knife for con security reasons, and I coulden't find a rubber one that was the right shape. That one isn't the right shape either but it's simple enough to try again now that I have more time to work on it.

Also made the holster, and its not really done yet. I need to dye the backside, put the (decorative) stiching in and leather finish. This would have been done in time if Tandy wasn't an hour away :unsure

I also got an M9 to make the holster, so I can add that as well (though it has black grips and the trailer gun has brown... can fix that)... also on display at the con was a prototype action figure... the best part was they had some of the accessory weapons... our first look at the shotgun!!!

Of course they also include a 1911 in there when there is clearly an M9 in the trailer... whatever. Point is, now I can find a shotty, and make that sling holster! Fun times.

Also got to play the demo they had... I wanted to play it in costume but I was having some scheduling fails (what happens when you work an exhibition table). Still fun times though.

I did a couple caps for you.
Pants look green and boots medium brown.

I was looking at this and the top issue to me looks like she is wearing 2 tops. Probably a cami with a built in sports bra for the bottom one because if you look at the first picture in the back the white is higher than her top and the vast majority of bras you can not see the back of them unless you are wearing a top with a low back. Plus she doesn't look very well supported as she would if wearing a regular bra. Sports bras/cami with built in support will give you support but not a lot.

greylocke - Thanks for the link, I'll keep it in mind.

Hogosha - Sorry to hear you're having trouble too. I can definitely see the wisdom in getting a larger pair of pants tailored, though I'll confess I'm gunshy on the dying part. I fully-dyed multiple parts of a costume earlier this year and it was a royal pain in the bahookie!

stoneagebowyer - I'm just a perfectionist. :) I also tend to do a costume once and then move on to the next one, so I want to get it as close as i can the first time. (That and I have limited monetary funds, so I try to make sure I have close to the right thing the first time or it's more money out of my pocket. Perhaps if/when I earn more income I can experiment more). Thanks for the compliment though. :)

LizardJedi - Nice job! :D (And thanks for the link too, you rock) Hm, I think I'm going to stick with an M9-style gun. Hunting for an early 20th century gun would be a pain!

megali - I think you're completely right. I hadn't even though to look at her back to check out the top. Now I've got to find a top that goes up that high. All of mine, as well as tops I've seen in stores, go to mid-back. Ah, she isn't really supported, is she? Good catch!
