I think it's patterened after a number of medical devices and some other scientific tools and a little imagination.
That's where the pressure bar was when it was an activator, because that's what it was a chiropractic activator. I now know he right year, just waiting for the pics.
I can't see a activator as the SS. It seems to be more of a screwdriver than anything. Sorry JB...you might just be wrong on this one.
I'm almost positive that's what it started life as but no one has been able to find the original tool.
If you see the prop being used in the TB film that's how it works, like a Yankee style push drill. I can't see the props guys taking a medical tool and reworking as a screwdriver but I can see them reworking a screwdriver to make it a bit more futuristic for the film.
I recently got permission to take some pics of the activator pieces at a chiro museum in Houston and knowing Manofsteel (who is heading the run of Baker screwdrivers right now in the junkyard) - He is without a doubt the most dedicated Doctor Who fan out there - specifically the Baker era. He's been helping me with this and his photos and documents have confirmed exactly what I thought. We've seen the exact model and know when they were made and were to locate some. I'll post the pics after we've secured some for ourselves and when I make it over there but real life has taken all my time as of late.
It's pretty weird - seriously, how many different models come close, but the one they picked is right on the money when you remove the bar. We were both surprised how little was changed to make it into the prop. We've been working on this for some time.
