Toho Godzilla returns "Godzilla Minus One"

While we wait for this film to hit theaters, Toho has released a new Gojira shot on the Godzilla Channel on YouTube called Gojira vs. Megalon. No spoilers, but in this one it looks a new design for Goji and they throw in a couple of surprises as well.

Good time to be a G fan.
There were some empty years here in the US from 85 to 2000. Had to find the VHS tapes from the shady sellers. LOL

I must now refrain from visiting this thread until I have watched the movie.

Sayonara tomodachi.

Ten minutes of my life wasted. The graphics were horrible and the sub titles were SO bad!

Fantastic!

It really has the feel of the early movies, while trying to give some depth to the human characters. The CGI isn't on par with the recent big studio offerings, and the plot 'surprises' are pretty predictable, but it's still a far better movie. If you're a Godzilla fan, you need to see it!

Saw it in the special Imax screening last week and really liked it. You could definitely tell the Director's favorite Godzilla movie was GMK, as he's stated in interviews. Like others have said, the Human story is strong and compelling, the plot isn't anything super new and most of the "Twists" or character moments are pretty well telegraphed, and the CGI isn't as strong as a lot of bigger studios (but to be fair they also havd like a tenth of the budget of Godzilla Vs Kong), but, it wasn't terrible, and definitely the strongest Godzilla CGI to come out of Toho. That said, some of Goji's movements did seem rather clunky or jerky, not as fluid as they could get out of their suits. It almost made me think they didn't base it on any Mo-Cap performances and tried to do it all from scratch. I could be wrong and they did have a Mo-Cap base, but the movements just felt less smooth than some of the suit performances we have gotten. I loved the new design, from the shoulders up. Something about his arms and lower body also just felt off to me.

All that said, I would encourage anyone to go see it, it really is a fantastic film.

I wanted to go see Minus One again next week in a theater, but it looks like it will already be gone. Best Theater going movie I have seen in many years. It's what I wanted from the Legendary Films or Star Wars or Jurassic Park or Indy, but those just don't deliver anymore.

Okay, I'll admit it. After seeing the trailer, I just thought it was just "another" Godzilla movie. But I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I can't wait till it streams so I can see it a few more times!

In my area I see showings out to Tues the 12th so far. IMAX is definitely ending before the weekend here.

I do want to see it in theaters again.

Well, I took my son to see it again. I was wondering how Godzilla would hold up for rewatching and I completely enjoyed it again!

Godzilla Minus One is a really engaging movie all around and I cared about the characters!

Much enjoyed it!
Am I crazy or were they actually saying "Godzilla" instead of "Gojira"?

I still don't know what "minus one" means. Meaning prequel?

Yup. They were definitely saying Godzilla.

Interesting factoid...it's understandably believed that the name "Godzilla" is a western creation. It's actually not. It was created by Toho. While "Gojira" is the more common Japanese pronunciation, "Godzilla" is an alternate dialect pronunciation. So, within Japan, "Godzilla" is perfectly acceptable.

If you should ever run into a self-righteous Godzilla fan who tells you that the only way to pronounce the King of Monsters' name is "Gojira", you can hit them with that piece of trivia :).

I'm not sure what "Minus One" means. I haven't looked into yet. It could simply be a Japanese colloquialism that gets lost in translation. The soundtrack is called "Godzilla 1.0". Not sure why they went with that either.

Japan after the war defenses were effectively at zero, their country at zero.
How can things get worse when you have nothing?
Godzilla. He put them into the negative.

Just by happenstance, I was reading reviews, and it looks as though in Japan the movie is called Godzilla -1.0

A Message To The Fans From Godzilla Minus One's Director

Shared on the Official Godzilla social media account, Yamazaki expressed his deepest thanks to Western fans that have been heading to theaters to see the latest take on the lizard king. Here's what Takashi had to say to North American kaiju fans, "We're excited by the tremendous response in North America. I've been reading the fan feedback on social media and am very encouraged by the passionate comments based on a thorough analysis of the film. In some theaters, I've heard there was even applause. Thank you for warmly receiving our Godzilla."
