BEHIND THE SCENE INFO...
I recently came across a person who worked with the Ironman movie and the costume. I found what he said to be very intresting. Read bellow for more info.

Props to you TMP, I know exactly how hard it was to do what you did here, Especially not having concept designs, or a maquette sitting beside you. Robert downey jr. never was meant to fit the costume and never wore it in any of the scenes in the first Iron Man, He does wear the top half in Iron Man 2, but cannot wear the bottom half because he is only about 5′ 7″ so when he wears the top half the crotch on the suit falls about 1/2 way down his thigh.

The suit fits 2 stunt guys measuring 6′-6′1″ 42 chest, 31,32 waist, Also the life cast are thinned down so that the suit also fits snug to prevent buckling, yes just like we built them for X-Men. Total weight of the suit 51 lbs.

I can’t tell you what materials we used bec. i don’t agree with the process, It could have been better, tougher, and lighter. But i can tell you the the materials you’re using will last alot longer then the materials i was told to use. I personally am in favor of epoxy embedded fiberglass, or carbon fiber. You might have some problems after a while with painted vacu-form plastics unless you use good quality automotive paint with flex additives.

I would not add lifts to the suits shoes bec. it will throw off the position of the knees. Remember robert never wore the whole suit, just the stunt guys. Good job. Builder of the real Iron Man suit.

Then later he wrote this after i replied.

Im glad you know that the whole undersuit, including midsection, back and alot of other parts are a combination of foam rubber and other rubberized materials, that’s the part i did not want to admit to, bec. it might ruin it for some. that’s why i give you props for making yours out of harder materials.

There are only 2 COMPLETE full mark 3 suits, (one of which robert is wearing the top half in that first link you provided) none of these suits fit Roberts hieght.

Notice they show him walking in it but never show him from the thighs to feet, (they did that on purpose, also cutting that right to a scene where he is in the non wearable mechanical cable costume
(that is the only one done on his life cast to fit him perfectly in the face)
that is set up only for the helmet opening and closing. 1st scene (where he is walking in the suit THE ONLY TIME HE IS ACTUALLY WEARING WHAT LOOKS LIKE A WHOLE SUIT) was filmed in the hollywood hills.

The mechanical costume was filmed at the studio, as for the shoes, Robert did wear shoes with a 2″ thick sole and 2 more inches on the heel.
Even at 4″ just with the shoe alone, before every scene his wardrobe lady would slip 2″ inserts into his shoes before he put them on,

Bringing him up a total of 6″. And yes the boots you refer to in the 2nd picture where made for Robert and were not only elevated for him but mostly for the look.

That height did not carry over the boots on the actual mark 3.

WOW.... I think this is cool news. What do you guys think? I AM SMILING LIKE THIS!! :love

BEHIND THE SCENE INFO...

Wow! That's a lot of info to assimilate!

I'm surprised by the foam rubber soft parts, I really thought they'd have gone with urethane or something similar, but even he sounds disappointed by the choice of materials they used for production.

Also, looks like I'm back to the drawing board for my own suit. If even RDJ couldn't wear a full suit (now I'm wondering if the shot of him bringing up his foot while atop the glass ceiling above the Arc Reactor was a CG suit) what luck would I have at my height? :cry

I was already planning on adding 4" to my height with the shoes, I'm just worried about proportion; I don't want to end up looking like the Michelin Tire Man or Staypuft. :lol

Re: Iron Man Costume. Tmp. New Photo Page 49.

awesome stuff man i bet you are excited to hear from the actual makers of the ironman suits.. thanks for sharing it..

Re: Iron Man Costume. Tmp. New Photo Page 49.

this costume is totally awesome. Are you coming to San Diego Comic-Con?

if your going the "pep" route, i really wouldnt worry about proportion, just do it!

I can understand why they used foam rubber on some pieces, its sooooooo much easier to paint that urethane.

I have been told that some parts were urethane but were intristically coloured. hope that adds to the insight of the creation.

The thing is, I'm really really anal about detail. Enough to where I think I'm scrapping the current plans for the suit and am just going to sculpt the damn thing. It won't be perfectly symmetrical, but it'll allow me to really fine tune it for my body and make sure it looks the part.

well, as you have propably seen in my iron man thread in the prop forum, im doin just that.

what i find helps with the symmetry is to make cardboard templates and use them to even out the sculpt.

let me know if i can help any

TMP, your work is great! I was inspired to start on my suit from seeing your suit and the comics.

Tezer photos on the gloves.

Here is a small update. More photos will come very soon.

We also been comissioned to do an full cold cast aluminum Mark II armor. I really look forward to seeing it worn.
Sounds like metall, shines like, feel cold as metal, hard as metal. Scratch and you scratch metall :)
Will be adding rivet points to the armor. Takes allot of work but it will look great.

The feet look good. They work from a size 13 size US to a size 9 size foot. Its made in sections so it can be adjusted to the wearer.
Will have photos once all is once my on my body.

Re: Iron Man Costume. Tmp. New UPDATE page 52.

Well i had a small apearence at the Norwegian Airshow now last week.
Sadly i had no spotter with me so they could help me correct the suit while weatring.
With the suit on its minimal you can do as long as i dont have a person near me who knows how when to help. It was a sunday and my whife was pissed because i left home one of the few days i am in fact home. hehe

The photos was taken of a proffesional photographer that was there for the event. I did not know he took them untill i found them.

Once looking at the photo I noticed this time i atached the crotch to tight. (To lose ... now to tight.... Argh) so the lower ab plate fell downwards.and revealing a gap. That is now fixed.

The boots i was still in progress after we decided to make a second pair since the first was not satisfactory to my standard. So therfore i had them not on.

Anyway heres a few shots.

Each time i wear it i se way of improving it. Now with the new parts modified and some changed i belive i solved it so it can be easy for the next wearer to wear it without problems.

Thanks for watching.
