T'is the season! Luke's Holiday Special lightsaber!

An in-universe explanation for the Holiday Special Saber could be that this was Luke’s failed early attempt to make a lightsaber of his own that never worked. Perhaps he gave it to Lumpy as a Life Day present.

Now, why couldn’t THIS have been the version of a lightsaber that Rey found in Maz’s Box?? That way, the original Graflex would still be lying, unmolested and unbroken, in an exhaust shaft in Cloud City.

Oh well...

The Holiday Special is not canon but some elements (like Lumpy and Malla) have been re-incorporated by recent novels.

as for canon, i always like making stories up in my head to go along with the props. like people freaking out about the difference in trooper armor... well its made by different plants across the galaxy. kinda like how a ford focus in Australia looks the same to its sister in the US but has a few different body lines

different plants, different little tweaks

as for the HS saber, if we want to play canon. Luke in heir to the jedi (first canon book release after Disney purchase) was given a lightsaber that was stored in a shine as a gift. this book takes place after ANH, maybe this HS saber is that gifted saber :cautious:

btw this thread has been way to quiet today... whats that Mr Troopertrent up to day? causing anymore HS trouble?

Given that George Lucas tried to destroy all evidence of the Holiday Special it's pretty safe to say it's not canon. How is this even a question!?

Come on Seth! Your telling me you don’t see gaffers tape on the grips!!

Bit by bit, more of the Holiday Special is becoming canon all the time. Ackmena (Bea Arthur) was just welcomed into the fold in two recent book releases. Boba's two-pronged rifle is going to make an appearance in The Mandolorian TV series. Lumpy showed up in Empire's End. Attichitcuck got a name-drop in the screenplay for Solo. Pretty much all the pictures of "Zutton" on merchandise are from the Holiday Special, not A New Hope. Kashyyyk as we know it was designed for the Holiday Special. Life Day itself gets a few mentions in canon games and books, and even has a page on the official databank. And now we know this saber was used in the production of The Empire Strikes Back.

It's true. All of it.

I definitely see 7 grips. approx 90-95mm long. The flash seems to be painted black first and then the grips added. They are not evenly spaced. One splits the control box right down the middle. I'm sure halliwax will cover all of that on his upcoming tutorial. I might make another template for spacing the grips if we can all agree on it.

Sounds good. It’s hard to tell whether or not the lower half of the flash was painted black. If so, I have to wonder what the point would have been, since the ANH Graflex just had grips applied to the chrome body. The HS saber was clearly a quick and dirty attempt to simulate the ANH saber, with the addition of the grips, red “button” (bulb), emitter shroud, belt ring, and “clamp”/control box.

Painting the top section and lower half black seems like unnesssary work.

Also, do we know for sure the timeline on this saber? As the story goes, the post-production Bob Seidemann photos (Hamill, post-car crash, Ford with FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE haircut, etc.) came well after ANH was over and done, after the hero saber and Solo blaster props were gone. So, I presume that the HS saber was actually built for that photo shoot (along with the Kobold Vader “saber”), and was then just reused for the HOLIDAY SPECIAL.

I'm guessing they painted it black to simulate grips and then later put some actual ones on it. It was such a rush job, who knows.

This is just jerk writers making in-jokes, and detail obsessed fandom cataloguing it. IT NEVER HAPPENED NOOOOOOOOO

Given how no one likes to even acknowledge the thing it's hard to say... but this is pretty much what everyone assumes. It would support the fact that the ANH Graflex(es) seem to vanish after production ends, whether it was restored and returned according to one legend, or tossed into a storage locker to be auction fodder 40+ years later, or whatever.

The ESB team did their homework/job correctly, but the HS team had $3 and fifteen minutes.

I like to think there was some conflagration where one of the heard "Graflex" and bought the wrong one... kinda like all those people trying to get $500 for Graflites on eBay.
