Time Bandits Map of the Universe

Timo - That's from me. Sorry to say that international shipmets are taking a crazy amount of time. Like 4-6 weeks. But thanks for the order.
Hi, nice to hear from you. I wasn’t criticizing. Of course it takes the time it takes. It would be nice when it gets here before Christmas, but if not, it’s not. It’s a very nice toy for nerdy men, but it’s just a toy. Nothing I can not live without for some weeks more. I hope it will not stuck in customs like my ghostbusters parts I ordered some years ago. The officers were really interested in the “proton gun parts” I ordered
Interesting that I can get stuff from China to Europe in two weeks, but it takes some time from the US. Not good for international business.

My map is here! 22$ customs (17.31€) :(
But worth it. Nice print quality on thick canvas. Now I have to find a nice frame for it :)

Look, I could probably keep working on this forever and ever and ever and ever and ever, but it's time to take it into the home stretch. After a long year of hard day-job work, and then an even longer year of pandemic and quarantine and work and parenting, things are starting to settle enough to allow me the time to finish it.

Over the last few months I've been tying up the loose ends to the point where I was able to run two test prints... and then very excitedly began the finishing work.

Currently I've got one "done," and the second is about halfway through the finishing process, after modifying a few of the steps.

The finishing steps are (currently):
  • gold leaf on the "portal" emblems and central circles
  • ink on the upper border handwriting
  • folding
  • sanding edges
  • sanding folds
  • sanding surface
  • weathering/aging
  • clear coat/sealer

Still working on my preferred "aging cocktail" and wash recipe.

The first one looks really great, but there are a handful of adjustments that need to be made to the print file- small stuff that was impossible to see on the computer screen, some color/contrast adjustments, etc.

Additionally, the canvas material works well, is low-cost and maintains great resolution and color, but I've got three others on order that I'm going to try and we'll see if I can squeeze just a little bit more authentic quality out of this piece!

Thanks for taking a look!

An outstanding result, you've really nailed that 'crappy xerox' texture, and the creator's handwriting is a nice touch!

Great work... I have a map currently under some boards on my floor getting the creases pressed in...

I may use your idea on the gold leaf areas....

Still got a lot of weathering to go.

Outstanding work! I'd love to have one of these on my wall but there are so many other unfinished projects on my list it will stay quietly on the wish list for now.

Been a while. I may have found a new map maker. Anyone know a seller on etsy from the UK who has made a TB map? Using the handle ValveWizard. I mention it for several reasons. First, it looks really good. I thought it was Breakfstmachine's or Merlinb's until I compared the clocks. He also mentions using the Fludd sources. "Lovingly reproduced using the same collage sources as the original, including the sixteenth century works of Robert Fludd, making this the most detailed and crisp version of this prop available anywhere." Is he an RPFer? Just curious. I have not reworked my map by sourcing the Fludd graphics and don't know if I ever will, but certainly Breakfstmachine's research has spread to other makers.

Something you might want to do…put it between two panes of glass, and maybe slide transparencies over the top with a magi-punk planchette atop that…to fill in the blanks with your own imagination.

I would have started with lasers

Not a million miles from the map display I eventually want to have in my home office -- looks like a matted and framed map hanging on the wall, but is a dimensional shadowbox of transparancies, volumetrics, and/or overlaid clear display screens (utterly in the R part of the R&D stage, can you tell?) so the map subtly shifts as I'm sitting there, and has real depth to it, not just illusory.

Question: Has anyone printed one of these on paper? As a poster? The design is such a beautiful abstract, I've always thought it makes a great picture.

I have the older Metrograpfix one from Etsy in a frame on my wall. Its unaged etc & in perfect condition. It always gets compliments as a striking abstract by people who know nothing of TB.

My vendor uses Epson Exhibition matte canvas and I love it. Long ago I used gloss canvas and it reflected way too much for my taste. It needs to be less reflective to see the details and to look ancient.

I ran tests on four canvases and my preferred result (the ones shown above) had the best overall weight and the best color and the best resolution BUT the printer added a little more gloss than I was hoping. You can kind of see the "satin" sheen above.

Between some weathering and a matte clear, the final product feels great.

They say, "The Journey is the Destination."

End of a GREAT run for me today. Received a C&D from Handmade films and had to remove my TB map from etsy. Would like to know if Indy Magnoli received the same C&D since I know he sold Joatrash's map on etsy, and it's no longer listed. I believe the pre-production of a Time Bandits TV series is the reason attorneys are cleansing the net of intellectual property violations that were fine in the past. I was just about to order a large printing of maps to have plenty on-hand for the holiday season. GLAD I DIDN'T! Ah well, it is what it is. Fine while it lasted.

Crap. I was literally thinking I wanted a TB map the other day, not having read this post. Went out on Etsy and found a couple of vendors selling, one on nice canvas. Perfect, I’m putting it on my Xmas wish list. Read this thread just now and check Etsy and sure enough, they’re all gone.

I’m cringing at the thought of someone doing a TB series… having visions of Sliders…Why do production companies get so up tight about this?? Just let the fans do their thing already.

JHeilman, dare I ask if that order forbids you from selling on The RPF? I would definitely be interested…

As hot as things seem to be right now, I think I'll just stop selling altogether. Sorry. But doesn't take too much research to put together RPF and Time Bandits map and etsy, then... BOOM!

the boom was my etsy shop being shut down...
