So I went to our local Party City and Halloween America store to look at the official Disney Mad Hatter costume pieces. I was very disappointed by the wig and the eyebrows. The wig is very flat and has no volume to it. It also looks very synthetic. The eyebrows are a much darker shade than the wig and they don't even have a mesh back for proper adhesive attachment. I didn't see the hat pins and was wondering if any of the MHs out there have them or seen them. Are they made of plastic or metal? Are thy to scale or are they much smaller? It seems the Art Deco hat pin is much smaller and the gemstone on top is mounted incorrectly.
Overall I wasn't too impressed by the quality for the official licensed pieces.

Hmmmm....I ordered both the brows and wig (pretty cheaply, might I add) and the eyebrows I got do match the wig. But, alas, there is no backing I probably won't use them.

As for the Hat Pins, I have them....got them on Friday. There ARE metal, and not bad.....a little small in some cases. I meant to post a pic earlier, but forgot my camera at work. I'll post one tonight!!!!

It was very messy but I used white craft glue and kinda brushed it over a piece with my fingers, added some more and then glued again, some loose hairs off to the side... the glue dries clear so it all stays together.

You could also buy some mesh/netting and hand tie them...but i do NOT have the patience for that. At all. :| Or the precision.

What spray is everyone using to lift those ends of the Orange yak Hair???

As far as eyebrows go, the funny guy wig is great because there is so much to it. around the back, take a seam ripper and gently pull off the frizziest line of hair where it is sewn on. get a piece from where it won't be missed, and make sure it is long enough to be cut in half and used for both eyebrows.


then, take an iron on a low setting, and fold a paper towel in have. fold the bound edge of the hair-trim under the longer hair and press between the paper towels for a few moments, This will make the bound piece dissapear but it also becomes what you will anchor to your face.

do this for both, and then shape the eyebrows accordingly. Now, to attach them:

get a stick of elmers glue, and glue your eyebrows down flat. once the glue dries, then you can attatch adhesive and stick your eyebrows on. the glue protects you from pulling any of your actual eyebrow hair out later on. To remove, just use a cotton ball and rubbing alchohol.

I hope all that makes sense, because its what I did for my eyebrows and I think they look great. Plus they stay stuck on for hours!

As I mentioned earlier, I really like the whistle and hollow pins. The rest, kind of a waste. The gem is all wrong, as is the art deco one. The jewel on top is completely wrong! And the daisy looks like plane propeller blades. Oh well, enjoy!!!

second round of hat making... this one is for Jodo

brim needs some minor reshaping after it dries... didn't want to mess with it too much while it was still tacky to the touch.

i used this method for making my hat, and the technique i found works best when painting, is taking model paint( brown and green) mixing them to the colors i want. then paint where there are more holes in the fabric and more brown green. and painting the less holy areas a less brown green. good job on your hat so far, and i cant wait to see it completeled!

I forgot to ask. Were they the Disney products, or the mad Rabiit versions? Those are horrrrrrible! Their Hatter wig had black hair mixed in it, and the Red Majesty is laughable at best!

I think any super/extra/crazy/all day hairspray will do. I pinned it to a wig head, sprayed the living daylights out of it with said hairspray and let it dry upside down. Then sprayed it some more while it was upside down...and then some more.

Works like a charm!

The funny guy wig is great cause it's so full I don't think it needs too much styling...the above method is great if you're styling something a bit flatter. Our hatter wig was originally a pretty collarbone length, flat, layered wig. @_@

Thanks for the great how-to Chad Already planned on gluing my eyebrows down with the glue-stick but thankful for the explanation on how to make the eyebrows from the wig. I'm glad there is a lot of extra to my wig as well so I can remove a strip of the hair without worry it will be noticeable.

its pretty tricky, so i need to keep practicing

im trying out the threadbanger tut with some green vinyl but i can't get the darn vinyl to not bunch up..tips anyone? anyone go with this method.

i guess while im at it, does anyone have a preference on makeup?

You need material that stretches dude, alomost spandex like in character. If its a thicker material (like vinyl) it wont work.

not necessarily... I used vinyl. You just have to draft a pattern to do the crown in two seperate pieces.

there's going to be a seam in the middle but the sash covers it.

for the threadbanger tutorial, i can't remember if its just a V shaped crown or hourglass...but either way, it's just a matter of testing out some patterns with some other scrap non-stretchy fabric

i used Vinyl
its kind of thinish so it had a bit of stretch
as for the shape i started with a cylinder and cut it into 3 peices then kept stitching it back together in a sort of curve just small enough that it could fit around the frame but still be tight

the actual hat actually has 3 seams
2 on the sides and one in the back

this is also a method commonly used for making hats
though they dont have sloppy hand stitching on the seams like this hat does

Thats kinnda how I did mine... I cut it into an hourglass and have two seams down the sides, I am saying that doing it the way that TB did it with vinyl won't work. To do it that way (the TB way) the material needs rebound.
