Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

I found a YouTube viddie someone made in which she uses the faux fur you can find at Michaels for the eyebrows. Works and looks great. All you need to do is dye it orange!!! Plus it is by the yard so you can get long term usage!!!

It doesn't help that I now cannot find the viddie but it is out there!!!

I KNEW IT! the second I uploaded it I knew someone was going to see the paint right there and think I painted the leather, Its dyed, the green paint is from another project which I will post a picture of shortly.

Like I said, it has some work needed still. That thing that appears to be a seam on the inner brim is indeed, but its only visable because I tried something "new" and it didn't work the way I wanted it to.

Nickytea, my great Grandfathers were Hatters Professionally, they worked for a hat line out of Kansas city. After the shop closed, the Hatting profession was passed down anyway, so I have a modicum on knowledge as far as actual hatting goes. They never got to work in leather, but as far as shaping the hat goes I used what know-how I have to achieve that perfect shape.

LOL, at first I thought that about the paint as well, but figured it was there for another reason. (Like that lady. :lol)

That's cool about your family making the hats. :D

Chad, that is awesome that you come from hat makers! Were they truly mad hatters?? I heard somewhere that hat making used mercury back in the day and that is where the term Mad as a Hatter came from. I'm sure you knew that though!!

JODO!!! I can't thank you enough for posting that link. Chad and I were trying to figure out where they went!

LOL, veach, no probolem at all. :D Glad to help!

BTW...Clock makers we're nucking futs as well. :lol

Yes! They used Mercury to cure felt made from beaver pelts. It was allowed until I think the 30's and then the Government banned it.

Were any of my family members truly mad? Not that I know of, although My Great Gandpappy did try to Vacuum the lawn once.

Its cool because we have alot of their Leftover hat making supplies, hat blocks and the like. Even some bottles full of dark substances, but we're all a little afraid to open them!

Anybody got any pictures of their Hatter coats? I'm interested to see how y'all are doing that little piece of accessory.

MUAHAHAHAHAHHAAAA!

After weeks of lurking I can FINALLY join in on the discussion!!

A hello to Nick, who I've spoken to on IMDB, Jack_Savvy, who I have been not-so-secretly lurking and relying on C.c to PM, and Sith, who I've seen around on C.c as well ( Thanks so much for the photos from SDCC, btw! ) and to everyone else I've yet to meet who I'm sure it will be a pleasure discussing all of these fabulous costumes with!

Chad, gotta say, your hat is GORGEOUS! I love the shape! It's very similar to my own ( which I did not make, but seriously, heavily altered ) but looks just a smidge taller, which I love. I remember I was so disheartened when Travis' ( the bf ) hat arrived and was only 7 or 8 inches tall...until he tried it on and it looked MASSIVE. It's so deceiving! That aside, in terms of hat talk, I have to probably pull out all of the gold stitching since I don't like the colour of it anymore and repaint the whole bugger before doing all of the detail the right way. I fear I won't make it in time for the movie, but alas, there are many occassions to perfect it for!

I think Jack_Savvy mentioned in the beginning here somwhere that I had already done the Red Queen and Hatter. I did! And before Halloween, too. Crazy, right? ( I know some of you are just as mad as I am! ) Hence the reason for now needing heavy modifications on both. My poor, poor RQ wig is currently all rinsed and straight and limp and boring just waiting to be cut and curled and blown up into a huge luxurious red afro...

Here are a couple of the ( almost embarassing, now ) before pics... admittedly, Hatter needs TONS of work ( vest, tie, coat, hat ), though I'm pretty pleased with most of my RQ ( minus the plain skirt ). They were, as I believe Nick said, 'dirty' versions to get done in time for Halloween so in due time the 'After' pics will show up. ;)

I do think what we did with the eyebrows almost worked though. We ( or I, rather ) cut strands from the wig and straightened them, then brushed them with fabric glue so that they would stay together, molded them into lovely shapes and voila. Used spirit gum to attach and they looked fab! He got a lot of comments on them the couple nights we went out. :)

My biggest question at the moment is: What is everyone using for coat materials? The one in the pictures was a light brown suede which I was told would dye and did not. At all. And therefore had to be fabric-spray-painted to get it the colour it is and I was heartbroken it still wasn't dark enough. I didn't even bother aging it since I knew I'd be remaking it anyways. It's always looked like a nice suede to me for some reason...and the way it's worn down in areas. Of course, I've never been to the exhibit and I know some of you have some up-close opinions. So please, do share!

In other news, I'm currently attempting to work on the sleeveless Alice dress for the movie as well... I just don't think I have the guts to wear my RQ to the theatre... but every time I go to start it I realize I'm missing some vital fabric. At least it's simple enough that it should take minimal time once I actually have everything for it...

Good luck on your costumes, everyone, and I can't wait to see some more progress pics along the way! :)

Holy Cats! whilst searching the competition I indeed came across your guys's Outfits and thought you looked smashing! Thanks for the compliment on my hat, you're a doll!

And I think that your red queen gown is top drawer. I am preparing to start one for a friend of mine for the premier, and I have two words regarding the gold part: CURTAIN PANELS. seriosly. No joke.

And wherever did you find that hat for the BF?

Thanks!
Ugh, I've been looking at EVERYTHING for the skirt. Upholstery fabrics, curtain panels...ANYTHING! But I seriously love the metallic look of the cheap stuff I found which is what's deterring me from any other brocades or damasks at the moment. It seems everything I find is JUST gold ( and a softer finish like a satin or...a sofa. ) or the red is nowhere near enough...though I suppose some would be better than none. I found some shiny gold upholstery stuff yesterday with a close enough pattern in it, but it was all gold so I'm not sure if it would be noticeable enough in photographs to shell out $30/yd for. It's tough always being on the lowest budget possible! >_<

The hat for Travis we commissioned from a site called Gypsy Witch Hats...they had a link for this Hatter style specifically but it was only there for a minimal time...I'm glad we got it! It was just a plain black and then I covered it in a painted and hand-cut-patterned faux leather. :)

If you find any similar curtain panels in your journeys across the net, do link'em my way!

Wow, I think you both look pretty darn nice! :D I like your avatar too! :D

I'm getting excited about you guy's costume, I can't wait to start showing my own progress! (I feel left out!)

Holy crap, Until I started making my own Gypsy Witch did all my hats for me, I have like 6 of their designs plus a ton of my own. They're super nice!

since the discussion has turned to the Coat fabric id like to give some input

the stuff im using i found at wallmart. i would tell you what it is but truth be told i have no idea. it looks like Vinyl but feels like Swede, its really nice though. it irons well and takes to paint, i just wish i knew what it was

Chad knows the stuff i speak of.
i think it works well though id love to find out what Toby used. hes resulted to talking like a Jedi Master

you do it to taunt me dont you Master?

You guys have spoke of WM having material many times...However, only one WM in my area stocks any fabric, and it's a minimal ammount. It's also like 45 mins away. All the others have stopped stocking fabric.

Wal Mart is EVIL. They tried to stop stocking fabric in our town, after they swooped in and ran the fabric store out of business. But everyone rallied and picketed and protested and they kept HALF of the Fabric department. Its a three hour drive for me to go anywhere with fabric, which royally sucks.
