Three Amigos Costume Build

Hello folks,

My buddies and I are going to shoot for the Three Amigos costume for DragonCon 2011 and possibly other conventions. What I'm looking for is a few tips on the costumes as they are all pretty much the same base but with different beading, sequin patterns, etc. I was going to try and do most of the work by appliqué. Ideas on the boots, pants, jacket, shirt, ascot, and sombrero would be appreciated. This is my first attempt at a western style costume.

Ok, after breaking it down a bit, I think I've come up with the best budget option for all that white and sequined appliqué work. I'm going to try and utilize some simple fabric paint (perhaps glittered a bit) and work in some rhinestones and sequins into that. We'll do a test run on some black muslin pants I've got. Wish me luck. If that works, it'll be just a matter of pulling some good screenshots from the DVD, a little design work and then a massive puff paint party. Time to call in the rest of the team!

Well, a bit of an update on this build. I've been pretty successful so far with garnering some stuff that is good quality but also at some good prices. I've garnered the spurs, boots, sombrero's (major score), ties, shirts and two of the three belt buckles. A trip to Tandy Leather has gotten me some of the my stuff including the assorted detailing I'll need for the holsters. The holsters are being made and the gun replicas are going to be Denix. I'm just hoping the Deadwood revolver comes back into stock soon before I'm forced to go with the standard 0.45 Army and do some painting. I've heard the grips on Denix replicas are notoriously hard to get off. I'd rather not paint them, but recast them in a faux ivory resin material. I think I'm asking for more trouble than its worth though. Paint may be my only option. I've also ordered about 1500 heat set rhinestones for decoration. My gut tells me I'll be ordering about 1500 more before its all said and done with. Anyway, a few pictures of what I've gotten so far. I'll post some more when this is assembled and the puff paint/bejeweling begins. That's going to be some LONG weekends!!!!!! Attached you'll find pictures of the spurs, sombrero, gun choice, tie and the Amigo's themselves. I'm having some issues isolating a good replica of Lucky's belt buckle. Ned's and Dusty's are done and, quite frankly, quite awesome if I do say so myself. Lucky's is proving to be a bit more of a troublesome fine. I'm about to break down to a pirate/Santa style buckle and paint it or sand it down to expose the silver. Ideas, oh ye great and knowledgeable members of the RPF?

Tuxedo shirts arrived the other day and they are pretty nice, right down to the slightly filly cuffs. I've got my Denix replicas on the way in the next week and the first prototype holster should be here soon also. Still haven't found a good version of Lucky's belt buckle but may have to sacrifice and downgrade to the "next best thing" soon. When the bejeweling and painting starts, I'll be posting pictures.

Do you mean bedazzling? ;)

Also, this looks like it's gonna be an awesome build, can't wait to see them done.

So, my Denix replica I want is, again, on backorder. Time to scale down to a regular 0.45 Army Colt and just paint the grips I guess....... :wacko

This is awesome - I have never seen anyone do these costumes before. Lets just hope people get the reference when you wear them.

Denix replicas received today and pants have been identified. I'm waiting for measurements. Holster prototype is on its way and, if satisfied, two more will be ordered. I had hoped to have all accessories by now, but I"m a little behind. Bedazzling and painting to start VERY soon! Stay tuned.
