Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

New and bigger helmet is done. That's it on the left:

Now there's actually room inside for something other than my head. I can include padding, lights, possibly the servos I'll need to open the face. This is a much better size.

I'm waiting on some replacement parts for Lopez, but the parts of the new, bigger arm that came out came out great.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Still waiting on repair parts for Lopez. In the meantime, I've been smoothing out the bigger helmet:

I'm waiting for my next bucket of silicone to show up before I start molding it. In the meantime, I'm making it much smoother.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

haha! How cool is this!

Subscribing so I can definitely keep an eye on this one.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'm doing the pulls in fiberglass to keep everything lighter than rotocast parts and more detailed than vacformed parts. The Space Marines were well-suited to vacforming because they had a lot of big, smooth pieces. At the opposite extreme you have the Halo Spartan suits I did which had too many tiny details spread all over them. Those ones really lent themselves to rotocasting. If I had the capability to spray fiberglass back when I was working on that project, I probably would've done parts of them that way instead.

I may not use latex, but I will definitely make the neck out of some kind of rubber. There are lots of reasons for this. Not the least of which is because that's how the screen-used suit was done. Check out this video at about the 2:15 point: Iron Man: Behind the Scenes - Robert Downey Jr (4/4) - YouTube

Among other reasons, it'll be more comfortable to wear and it'll be easier to reproduce copies in latex. I'll need to do so in order to build the Mk2 as well as the Mk3 and the eventual (seemingly obligatory) War Machine suit.

Your stuff looks amazing as usual! Are you going to make a similar undersuit like the one shown in the video? Don't think I've seen anyone make that before...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Made a bit of progress on the bodywork yesterday. First I worked on my abs:

They're really starting to shape up:

Then I added more filler to the smaller flaws in the bicep:

Here it is in primer:

When Lopez did the cutting for the pelvis, there was something horribly misaligned. As a result, a few of the pieces didn't line up quite right. So I also started touching up some problem areas with bondo:

In other news, I should be getting my new shipment of silicone tomorrow, so it'll be time to mold the helmet. Not that I have any shortage of things to tinker with in the meantime:

In addition to the helmet, I should have the waist, pelvis, and arm parts ready to mold this week. Stay tuned.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

That bigger bucket is probably still too small for my ginormous skull. LOL. Looks cool to me though.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

i cant see your pics very well...... theres something in my eyes.... oh, they are tears.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Progress on the arms lately.

The bicep is almost done. It just needs a tiny bit more smoothing:

The forearm parts are right behind it:

I still haven't gotten around to molding the helmet. Should be any day now.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I really like the subtle compound curves you were able to acheive in the bicep and the forearm. Should make for a very seamless connection and nail that Mark III smooth look!

Keep it up!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

good workk
you made it out of fiber glasss and all that stufff rightt

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Sick stuff, man. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Maybe I'm just tired or maybe I've become a prematurely old curmudgeon, but this is exactly the kind of question I hate answering. The question itself makes it clear that you haven't read any of what I've written and, since you probably won't read my reply, it's almost not worth typing it. So yeah. Fiberglass. And all that stuff. Right. Now get off my lawn.

In other news, I've carved out most of the pieces for the new, smaller chest:

LMAO:lol...

But seriously, what an epic build... and if given a chance to work in your shop... I'M IN PARADISE...:love

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'm curious: why do you leave the thin lines of MDF connecting all the pieces after CNCing? Does the software you're using do that automatically, or did you add those in yourself?

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I have to add them in manually. If I don't support the pieces as they're being cut, at best they'll fall out of the machine as the board moves out and get damaged when they hit the floor. At worst, they'll hang up on the rollers inside and start breaking things.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Dude, you're doing a spectacular job with this!!! You're really using your hardware in a smart way to achieve all this!

Keep them update comin!
