Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Hi Shawn. Awesome build, excited that it's coming together so perfectly. I've been following this thread and your blog for a while and am blown away by all your work. It's very gracious of you to show everyone the process in such detail.

With your expertise in prop building, I was wondering if you could help me with a question I'm having about detailing pepped pieces. Would it be possible to use rondo on the outside of a piece (like a helmet) instead of regular bondo? I saw on one of your blog posts that you used rondo to reinforce the inside of a pepped helmet, making it strong enough to stand on without deformation; using it on the inside of pieces seems to be the general consensus everywhere I've looked on RPF. Would it be viable to use it on the outside of a piece for detailing?

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

The pictures of this build have been amazing to see. When you're finished please post up some high quality shots, or maybe a video. I'd love to see how this articulates and your mobility. The bungee fastening system seems very clever. This build deserves a pro photo shoot. Keep up the good work!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

You never fail to impress me Shawn, the servo and hinge set up you'd got there works like a dream. I'm really looking forward to see you suited up! Thanks for showing everything in such detail.

Thanks Steve. Nice of you to keep checking in.

Did I miss a post about the links/hinges, or is this the first you posted about it? Getting the helmet moving was the most recent interesting thing that I was hoping to see in your build.

Also, the Godkiller helmet looks fantastic! I hope to see that in the JY. =)

The only other time I've posted about the faceplate linkage is when I came up with the paper mockup:

Wait till I start making the back flaps move.

I can't wear the Godkiller helmet while it's still mostly a lump of oil-based clay. At the very least I'll have to make a mold...

Here's the blog post you're talking about: When My Brain Leaks, the Drops Drip Here.: Prop Building 101 Part 1: Building a Helmet from Pepakura

The only reason to use Rondo instead of Bondo is if you need something to be harder than normal Bondo. If you put it on the outside and let it cure, Rondo will be much harder to sand and shape than normal Bondo would be.

Trust me, when this beast is done there will be no shortage of photos. I've got some video ideas too, but I'm keeping them to myself until I'm sure I can pull them off.

For now, here's a bunch of pics of me test-fitting the suit on Trevor:

He's essentially the exact same size as me, so I use him as stunt double whenever I need to try something on at the same time as I'm looking to see how everything fits. If you've been watching any of my other builds, you might recognize him from pics like this:

Or this:

Or this:

He's a great sport and tends it take it well when I tell him things like, "I need you to put on this vest and hold still while I burn holes in it with a soldering iron and then rivet a bunch of stuff to it."

Anyhow, thanks for looking and stay tuned. Sooner or later I'll get to work on adding the lights.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Man, I wish I had my own "Life Model Decoy" to help me try out and fit costumes! :lol

Awesome work as always! Can't wait for the full suit up!

I have been waiting to hinge my helmet from you just to see how you did it and then blatantly use your method. I like what you did with it and it looks like it should run off just two servos (maybe one, but it looks more like two). We will see...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

UNF. Those pictures without the flash just make me absolutely thrilled. It's perfect. If someone showed me those out of context and told me they were in-progress pics from the making of the movie, I'd absolutely believe them. One detail that really jumped out at me was the effect of the lifts in the shoes, it's probably the first time I've seen one of these suits where the long line of the lower leg and comparatively small footprint 'clicked' in terms of proportion. So very often, that area looks clunky, whereas here, sheesh, it looks like a superhero.
Can't wait to see the lights and the servos added.

New pics look incredible! You're in the home stretch now. Hands down one of the best looking builds I've seen. Hall of Fame material for certain. Well done!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Dang it. Now I want one too! (the suit that is) ;) Hey if you need another double just lemme know.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing your build all those pics of your moulds have been a massive help with my own build

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Fantastic pics Shawn! The suit looks great on Trevor, can I ask how tall he is? I know there's lifts inside the feet to add to this though? Maybe I should ask how tall he is with everything combined

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Apologies for the lack of updates. I've been scrambling to deliver a couple of major commissions and this thing got backburnered for a bit. If you're curious about what I've been up to, you can check out one of the more interesting projects on its Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GagetheRobotMovie?ref=stream&hc_location=stream

That should be an awesome project when it's done, so be sure to check it out and like the page while you're there.

Today I got back to work on the Ironman armor. I started by clearing off a bit of bench space:

Then I pulled out all of the rubber parts and washed them:

Then it was time to mix up some red paint and get to airbrushing:

The latex paint does a number on the airbrush. I had to strip it and clean it at least a dozen times today:

Still, after all of the aggravation, I managed to get a good, solid basecoat on everything:

It's not a terrible match:

Tomorrow I'll be adding the shading in the recesses and hopefully tweak the overall color more towards purple and away from orange. Then the glosscoat.

Stay tuned...

The picture you linked is one of the concept art renders. To see the parts I made, you have to look in this album HERE.

Those were the shots from the test-fitting day when I handed off the top half of the suit so it can be painted and strapped together by another shop. Fun fact: aside from the guy in the suit, I'm the only person involved in the project that has never worked for Industrial Light and Magic.

The whole thing really does look like it's going to be a great project. Seriously, go check out the page and click on "like" so you can see updates as things move forward.

Gotcha. I've amended the link. :)

And again I must repeat myself: AWESOME.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Thanks for the updates Shawn, look forward to seeing how you get on with those rubber inserts.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Shading before and after:

2nd neck during shading:

Both copies shaded:

I sprayed a spare pair of elbow parts with different flexible glosscoats to see which one I like better:

When I get back to the workshop, I'll be stress testing them both to see which one holds up better after curing overnight. Then I'll spray it on the red parts.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I love seeing props after weathering, especially when there are before/after pictures like this. Awesome work!
