Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I've been waiting for a totally CNC/3D printed build, and this looks like the one. It is how Tony Stark did it after all.

this is true Xrobots, i agree... add this one to list of watched threads like yours James!

Great work!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'd say that's one hell of an excuse for not updating.

I'd say that's one hell of an excuse for not updating.

I think so. It was the first actual vacation trip I've taken since I was seventeen. Unless you count my fun-filled trip to Afghanistan a while back:

Still, even the best things must come to an end. After three great weeks, I had to leave my leggy blonde behind, fly back to the workshop, roll up my sleeves, and start making garden gnomes again.

Somewhere in there I also started tinkering with the armor again. First, I've solved the hinge problem. Here's how:

First, I got the pieces together:

These are the pieces for one side of one elbow. The strips are 22ga. stainless steel with a 9/64" hole drilled in one end. The rivet is 1/8" and the pieces of paper will make sense soon.

Here they are all put together:

I put a piece of paper in between each of the pieces in order to act as a spacer and prevent me from riveting the whole thing into one immovable part. Then I made three more sets:

Once I figured out how to center them inside the elbow pivot, I went ahead and marked the tabs in order to make sure I had them lined up correctly:

After a lot of bending, dry-fitting, and re-bending, I used a 5-minute epoxy to glue the first strip inside the upper arm piece:

Then I glued the forearm onto the second tab:

In this case I used another bit of paper as a shim in order to be sure that the forearm would clear the pivot without binding up or scratching the paint.

The last step was attaching the elbow to the third tab:

Success!

They still pinch a bit, but with such a snug fit that's to be expected. The key thing is, no bleeding.

In other news, Jarvis was sitting idle so I had him make this:

Because I needed that.

More updates coming faster now. Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Yes armor updates are back. :D

Now that's a warmachine part right?
Interesting.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Jarvis did a great job, my printer at school is being a well rounded ass and not printing at all. Once I fix it I may be able to finish printing some Arc parts though.

Glad to see you had a good time and are back to working on some good old fashioned armor!

Wow, so I've been lurking for a while, dipping in and out, work has calmed down a bit and seeing as I ordered a helmet last week thought I'd look around for ideas of what to do. Amazing post and work, can't wait for my helmet to arrive even more now........ And then see if you will sell me the rest of the suit for like 200 bucks. Seriously amazing work and having spent the last 3 hours of my life happily reading this post, I'm just going to see what the fuss is about with the other builds too. Another subscriber now.

He actually has a thread in the Junkyard selling helmets. They look pretty sick. Check it out.

Thanks for the compliments. But $200 for the rest of the suit? I'm hoping that was a typo and you just left off a zero. It'd still be too little, but at least we'd be in the right ballpark...

UPDATE!

Test fitting the outer forearms over the inner forearms the other day, I noticed that they have a tendency to get misaligned and bind up a bit. To mitigate this, I came up with this little piece:

It's cut to fit over the ring on the inner forearm:

Here it is before I glued it solidly inside the outer forearm:

Here it is with the forearm not quite pushed in all the way:

Yesterday I assembled the hands. I started by installing rare-earth magnets into each side of the palms:

Then I put on a burgundy opera glove, clamped on the palm parts, and got to work:

I put a bead of CA adhesive around one edge of each piece and glued them onto the fabric glove:

Here's the first finger done:

Here's the first hand done:

And the pair:

The fabric glove looks pretty glaring in close-up pics with a flash, but it's a lot better with a bit of distance:

Stay tuned...

Thanks for settling my fears about the opera glove; the flash is NOT kind to its apparent color.

hmm so by my reckoning my 200 bucks buys me............. 1 x left shin (front part only of course)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

200 would even cover the cost of materials, but darthgarth if you can make a full suit for 200 i'll buy 10.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

thorssoli buddy I've sent you a pm. Not sure if you received it.

Nice work on the hands. I think mockle's dragon skin for the gloves would work for the ribbing for 'em!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I think I'd sooner just make the whole glove out of rubber rather than try to put rubber into the already snug fingers.

I've been having a hard time focusing long enough to get anything done on this suit. Yesterday ended up being a non-stop exercise in distraction. I even started a new project I absolutely shouldn't have started:

Basically, I'm taking one of my flawed MkIII castings and using it as a sculpting base for the Godkiller helmet. It looks pretty rough for now, but give it a bit and it should become more presentable.

I'm also printing out the parts of the Mk33 Silver Centurion helmet based on Fierfek's files.

It's possible I've gone too far down the rabbit hole...
