First impression of the Tricorder.

1. It's beautiful. Very well designed, looks and feels great. With one minor nit pick. It's mass is less than I expected.
It feels just slightly heavier than the DST. I can weigh them both, but both the Phaser and Communicator have heft. Thats
one of the things that make them feel "Real". The tric feels a bit light.

2. The user interface, so far, seems very well thought out and intuitive. The video/audio work well and are effective.
The prop mode works very well! Also I really like the light and movement on the moire, it's not "cannon" but works.

3. The functionality is acceptable, but we knew exactly what it did long ago.

4. The only other minor nit pick is the hood rotation ratchet does not have enough resistance. I have to hold the hood
when I use the buttons.

I still have a lot to learn about it.

I checked both my email and Amazon just before I left for work yesterday and there was nothing on the Wand Company Tricorder. When I got to work, I checked and both the email had arrived and the Tricorder was listed on Amazon...SOLD OUT!

Weeks of constantly refreshing the Amazon page and it comes and goes on my commute to work! AAAaaarrrgggg!

The Tricorder is everything I wanted it to be and more. I could nitpick this or that, but at the end of the day, it is a truly solid piece of engineering. I know that there have been more screen-accurate versions (no SD card slot, no charging port), but I think that pound-for-pound (or ounce-per ounce if you're actually weighing it), this is a home run. The functionality is light years ahead of anything else we've seen. Does it play episodes? No. But it DOES have a built-in accelerometer, compass, microphone, recording, most of the logs (I do feel like some are missing), thermometer, and so much more.

There seems to have been a TON of thought given on not just a simple, easy-to-use interface, but giving it a playability factor that is off the charts. Whether you want just the prop mode, or you want to pick a specific function or you want the moire spinning and lit or not, or what position you want it in, or what color you want the jewels to be, there is so much packed in here.

They say you can't make all of the people happy all of the time, but this is clearly an attempt to make as many people happy as possible. The little kid inside me has been doing cartwheels (something I could never physically do myself) ever since I opened it. For those who did not make it into this round, it is worth the wait.

Are there any surprises? Of course not. We've seen videos and breakdowns and screen shots galore. There is NOTHING, however, like getting your hands on one and playing with it yourself. I don't know what, if any, upgrades TWC has in mind in the future. I could certainly recommend a few, but if this were to be the ultimate version of the product that we get, I think I would still be more than happy. And after having shelled out hundreds more dollars many years ago for a seemingly-accurate Master Replicas version, this is so much more worth the price.

One thing that cannot be disputed, at least in my mind, is that a whole lot of love and care went into the design and manufacture of this product. Both for the franchise itself and for the fans. I, for one, cannot wait to show it off to my friends who know of such things. It is a true treat, another home run for TWC, and a perfect finishing piece for the TWC Exploration Set. Now if only we can help them come up with a way to re-release the phaser and maybe issue a scanner or two...

When will the replacement straps hit the market?

I've purchased leather strips 19mm wide, between 1.5 and 2.4mm thick and cut them down to the same length as the leatherette. They're not double sided, one side leather the other side nubuck. Going to polish up and have stitched at a local shop. The supplied strap is starting to tear slightly in the slit area where it feeds into the tricorder and is squeaking a little as it moves. Can't have that

After reading your initial comment about the weight, I was disagreeing in the back of my mind. I also think it has a good weight and feel to it, like an authentic electronic instrument (which it is). Especially considering the bottom half is basically empty, except for the battery system and EMF sensor.

And about the hood, remember the original prop had no stops at all and was free to rotate to any position. Imagine a Starfleet officer pushing the buttons on their Tricorder having the same issue. You pretty quickly find a comfortable position to hold the hood steady with your finger. I think TWC came up with a pretty effective compromise to try and make this as easy to operate as possible.
