The Walking Dead - Season 6 Discussion

Concerning the ammo shortage, the show takes place in 'murica, so, shouldn't ammo be like, available in any supermarket? ;)

I read that in the comics, amongst his skill set, Eugene knew how to make ammo for the guns. Since I haven't read that far, I don't know if that info is correct or not, especially for the show. But I'm sure there are those who know how to make ammo and improvised weaponry as well.

It always a good idea to keep track of local gun shows in your area. Great place to go if there is a zombie apocolypse.:cool

Yeah, the RPG being found with American soldiers really took me out of that episode. Plus, the total incompetence of the imbecile who sat between two sealed in glass walkers and managed to scream, fall down right next to their mouths so she could be bitten, and then was dead in the next scene. That episode really wasn't all that great.

I actually rewound and watched the girl lay down between them a few times, hilarious.

You guys talking about scarcity of ammo may not actually comprehend the hoarding of such by gun/survival affectionados Buy in bulk, store in bulk. My grandpa had a crazy gun collection that still boggles my mind. Much was take homes and black market Vietnam era weapons he traded for gold and watches. Long story short I was the only kid on the block that knew how to operate a 50 cal Ma Deuce. Even years AFTER this collection was liquidated ive uncovered suitcases of ammo and full ammo cans/crates in the garage. I live in LA CA. Cant imagine what its like in dem back woodsy areas.
But, there should be at least one episode where they make note of this fact.

Fuel, thats another story. I more or less wonder where Darryl gets the machine shop time to fabricate on his bike.

Firing an M2 is one thing, but do you know how to change the barrel and set the headspace and timing? That there's the real tricky part about an M2, loading and firing is the easy part, setting the headspace and timing is the real trick to operating an M2.

I was waiting for soldier zombie to fall off the fence. Hitting the ground causing the RPG to fire off into the building across the street. Which is where Sasha was sleeping / resting. Killing or wondering her. Way to go Abe, you had 1 job to watch her and stay in the building. It didn't happen so I was bummed.

All with Yakkity Sax dubbed over, right?

Our military does have RPG's in stock. I have an old friend from high school who was Army intelligence back in the 90's and he trained as a Russian soldier along with a team training the same way so they themselves could be used to train infantry and such how to fight against Russian soldiers. He was trained with AK's and RPG's that the Army issued them.

Pretty much what I said, familiarization training for trainers primarily and for troops acting as OPFOR units at places like the Army's NTC. That being said, it is a bit odd for somebody in the US military to have one in the field, even if they are in the inventory. Are there any Special Forces units stationed in the DMV area or other units that are tasked with training duties that would explain the presence of an RPG?

Thinking of it, the bigger question is, why is there even something like an RPG being used at all? Things like an RPG, AT-4, LAW, SMAW, etc. are going to be of limited use against walkers since they're primarily anti-armor/bunker buster weapons though they can be equipped with anti-personnel warheads but those would be found mostly with RPGs (but we probably don't have a large stock of anti-personnel RPG rounds) and SMAWs since the LAW and the AT-4 are pre-packaged weapons. A more useful weapon against a horde of people (dead or a live) would be a Mk.-19 automatic grenade launcher or an M203/302, but not regular frag grenades since they rely primarily on shrapnel to kill and don't produce that large of a blast.

Yeah, that was my point above re: HEAT rounds. As I understand it, the most well-known warhead for the RPG-7 is what is essentially the spiritual successor to the Panzerfaust -- namely, a shaped charge that is designed to punch through armor, shooting liquid metal into the interior of the armored compartment, and causing spalling. It doesn't operate like an HE round.

I'd think frag rounds might be useful to some degree, to the extent that any of them took out zombie brain matter, but otherwise, you just have slightly-more-shredded zombies that are still a threat. HE would, presumably, blow them apart and (hopefully) sever heads from bodies in the process or simply vaporize the zombie. Or, I dunno, the concussive blast would destroy the zombie's brain.

But the average viewer doesn't know squat about munitions, and therefore just assumes that all 'splosions are the same.

Headspace and timing is fancy way of saying that the barrel of an M2 has to be put in just right by screwing it exactly so many times, with the number of times needed varying from gun to gun, in order for the gun to work properly, or at all. I learned about it in bootcamp but have long since forgotten how to do it exactly since I wasn't a grunt but I do remember that the way to check it had to with inserting a gauge (essentially a flat piece of metal) called a go-no go gauge and I think that if the bolt closes on it or something it's good. But this only comes into play when you change or put in a barrel after it's been disassembled. The one annoying thing about an otherwise awesome weapons system, although the military is supposed to be getting or has gotten new M2s that no longer require headspace and timing, just pop in the barrel and you're ready to roll.
