The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

In spite of its mixed reception I did pick up The Callisto Protocol for PS5, if for nothing more than a placeholder while waiting for the Dead Space Remake next year. I still want to pick up Evil West and Gungrave, but I will have to wait until next year as December is going to be an expensive month for me and I still have Crisis Core on pre order for this month.

I also picked up Front Mission 1 Remake on Switch which kinda released under the radar without much fanfare. Hope Front Mission 2 comes out sooner than later and hopefully they release Advance Wars Remake; rumor says potential February release.

Now put on your hard hats, OSHA approved eye and ear protection and step into the latest Rumor Mill:

With the Video Game Awards only a few days away now, twitter has exploded with Metal Gear 'news' with some leakers saying that Metal Gear Solid Remake has been in the works since 2019, will be exclusive to PS5 and will be shown at the awards. The only reason I believe this is due to the Twitter exchange a bunch of the Metal Gear voice actors had on twitter a couple years ago where they jokingly talked about working on another mission together and then just left it at that.
One 'insider' has blatantly said outright Metal Gear Solid Remake is a 100% true and that Sony is funding development to keep them exclusive. If sales do well Metal Gear 2 and 4 will also get full Remakes.

A Metal Gear 3 Remake exclusive to the PS5 was also mentioned and Metal Gear Solid 1-3 Remasters are in the works for both Xbox platforms, both Sony platforms and PC potentially to be sold as a bundled legacy collection.

How are you finding Calisto? Ive heard mixed things, the main issue being that the dodge is broken with poor i-frames?

Just got a PS3 and planning on picking up the MGS collection. If a remake is announced, I might hold off as hopefully prices will drop lol. Metal Gear Solid is a great series and I wouldnt be surprised if Sony wanted it exclusive. They already made many boneheaded decisions and Kojima has stated that companies have been trying to acquire Kojima Productions. Maybe Sony tried to acquire, Kojima refused, and they came to a compromise. Konami has to be involved though since they own the rights to MGS.

I actually haven't even started it yet. I have a two week Christmas vacation this year and was planning on spending most of it watching movies and playing PS5.

I actually still have my PS3 mainly just for the Metal Gear games. Not only did I buy the Metal Gear Legacy Collection for it, but I also picked up the Metal Gear HD Collection for it. Yeah, there were actually two separate Metal Gear collections released for the PS3. I kept trying to decide which one to get and finally said screw it, I'll take them both because who knows when we'll see more Metal Gear.

Konami has definitely licensed out numerous IP's to third parties already. A whole slew of Silent Hill games are coming out from a number of third party developers and rumor is Castlevania has been picked up by someone as well. Blue Point Studios has been the main rumor of who is working on a Metal Gear Solid Remake as Blue Point were partially responsible for the Metal Gear HD Collection on PS3 and have become Sony's goldenboy studio with a string of successful remasters and remakes on PS4 and PS5 behind them.

Just got the Platinum for Sonic Frontiers. Over all, its an alright game, but still has a lot of issues, so I give it a 6 our of 10. I had voiced my concern in a Sonic group a few months ago over these issues, but people "straightened me out" that Sega has fixed all these issues for their new games....well sadly, I was right. Camera has issues, but as least there are options to try and fix it for personal preference, so that helps. Game play wise, the open world stuff is much better than the levels, which really aren't even needed in this game. And there is a lack of any type of variety. Green Hill zone, Chemical Plant zone, Sky Sanctuary zone, and some city type zone....thats it. Now take those 4 levels, (and really, just the first 3 mostly) and remix the layouts over and over and over.....etc.

The controls in the levels are really terrible. Anyone thats played Sonic 4 will understand, as its similar to those. Then you got you basic issues with a game trying to run so fast, which it is. Random falling through the ground (although not too often) some parts in the open world cut to a 2D view to complete a task, but sometimes, it would stay in the 3D view and totally mess you up. Then theres the lock on to items or enemies to advance up to high places. Sometimes it would lock on, or it would be highlighted, but pressing the button didn't do anything, or if it was an enemy, instead of zooming over to it, the game would go into the combo animation, which was all flashy with Sonic shooting white energy balls, killing the enemy.....but, you would trying to lock on to it to get to that platform....so instead, you'd fall.
Some areas have towers that are like a mile high. It would be absolutely frustrating to get so high up......and fall because the game was being stupid.

Open world part is the most fun, and you get to really push Sonic's speed to the test, collect stuff, solve puzzles, which could either be fun, or frustrating at times. The biggest issue with all that, is that, of the 4 huge islands the game lets you explore, you are pretty much doing the same thing, over, and over, and over again.

Story wise, a little different and probably the most unique part of the game. You get to battle these huge titans, and the only way is you have to be Super Sonic. But the game keeps telling you over and over, that Super Sonic isn't strong enough to fight the final one.....soooooooo, I was REALLY hoping that they would find a cool way, (which I already thought of a good way myself) to bring back Hyper Sonic, which hasn't been used since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But,....they did not.
Anyone that likes Sonic games, I recommend it, just be prepared for some frustration, which has been a normal thing of all the 3D Sonic games anyways.

I tend to prefer playing the original iteration of a game partly because I like to experience the games as they originally were and partly because a lot of times the gameplay becomes watered down. For example, Metal Gear: The Twin Snakes for the Gamecube was a remake of Metal Gear Solid. It had the ability to first person shoot which MGS didn't have, and it made certain parts of the game including boss battles much easier, taking some of the challenge out of the game. You could forgo using it, but I imagine a new player to the series wouldn't think to approach it that way. Also, the voice work wasn't quite as strong despite most of the original cast reprising their roles. Speaking of voice work, David Hayter as Snake is my favorite thing about Metal Gear. If he's not in the remake, that's another reason to just play the original.

I hope its just a graphical update of the playstation. I'd much prefer them use the orginal recordings and just clean it up.

I would hope so too but I'm sure they're going to redo the storyline and probably add to it which would require new dialogue.

Yeah, I know. I hate that. I think that messed up the FF7 remake. Changed to much.

I am really having a hell of a time finding anything worth playing anymore. How hard can sci-fi single-player RPG/shooters be? I know that Starfield will be out eventually, but I seem to remember a ton of games that looked good that were supposed to come out in 2022, but none of them apparently did.

Yeah I heard about the gamecube remake being much more action packed (Snake dodging missiles) and the FPS aspect making certain bosses easier because the original didnt have such features.

Ive been looking into it and it seems it would be best if I bought new since MGS comes in a DLC code. Yeah, I love Hayter and it was a shame that he was replaced by Sutherland in V. It could have made sense given the reveal in V but it still didnt work since Hayter wasnt in at all.

Final Fantasy I-VI pixel remasters getting a Switch and PS4 release according to a recent ESBR rating.
Thats interesting. I played 1 but skipped 2 to 6. Playing them would be cool and I think nearly all FFs will then be available on the PS4 (original 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 are).

Here's a question for you all. Would you recommend The Witcher III without having played any of the others beyond a bit of I but stopped playing because I didn't particularly like the combat in the game?

Hope to hear about this MGS remake....and hope its good.
I know Kojima left Konami not on the best of terms....but they would be smart to let him over see the project at least.

Yes. Plus the original Witcher game is in progress of getting a full remake from CDPR anyway and that would be the version to play when it comes out.

YES!!!! I hadn't played any of the others before that. You can pick up the lore and things through books and other comments throughout the game. If you play through the game and DLCs in one go, it will feel like you went on a journey; it's a lot. Witcher 2 is also perfectly playable now, but I played it after 3. As for the combat, it feels odd, to me anyway, the first time, but you can get used to it.
