The Ultimate X-Wing Pilot Thread

Where can I find the accurate style grey hose for the chest box?

I just aquired a chest box and it came with a black hose, so I would like to change it!

What kind of hose is it? I have heard electrical conduit hose and dishwasher drain hose.

I found a dishwasher drain hose that was almost a perfect match. Perfect color, size and ribbing. Only problem was that it was connected to a real dish washer, so I can not say which brand of hose it was.

The color should be the same as your chest box, preferrably a grey with a tint of blue. (See discussion earlier in this thread)

I have sculpt a new comm pad for the Snowspeeder pilot costume. Some other Rebels in Echo Base also worse this one, including General Rieekan.
The colors here are wrong. The pad has grey primer and the speaker grid-of-holes is unpainted.

The spacing between the front buttons might be a little bit small, and I have idealized the face of the speaker mesh as a fine grid of round holes like the ANH/ROTJ comm pad, because I could not find a good-enough picture of it.

It will be attached to the gauntlet by bolting it together with a sheet of styrene on the inside. That will prevent any gaps. The nut and bolt will be hidden below the speaker mesh.

Requesting pix of...

* the back of your chestbox to show possible
methods for attaching the harness and hose.

* accurate flight suit chest pockets.
Some tutorials say you don't really need 'em, but they still give templates unfortunately, I can't tell where the opening is. Top/Inside/Outside!?!

* Collar tab showing height of collar as well as depth and angles of the point.
I've attached a jpg if anyone wants to
just tell me what these dimesions are.

H= 5 cm or 2" (Height of collar)
A= 45* (Angle of point side to horizontal)
L= 3.5355cm or 1.4142" (Length of point side)
P= 90* (Angle of point)

I updated the jpg with info from Darth Lars.

I took a piece of L-profile plastic and cut this into four brackets, about 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) wide. I cut holes with a dremel cutting wheel at the edge, 1 inch wide for the strap. I glued a bracket inside the chest box at each corner.
I am not using, but I think I should use a single 2 meter long strap that I thread through all four brackets and connect at the back.

I will take pics later.

These are the measurements that I use:

H = 5 cm = 2 inches
A = 45 degrees
P = 90 degrees

The distance between point A and the front flap is H, i.e. 5 cm.

Here is the inside of my (home made) plastic chest box. I forgot that the side brackets were mounted on the side walls, and the top mounts to the front wall.

(Yeah, I have had some ideas for putting some kind of LEDs inside, but I have not got very far...)

By the way, here is a tip for making the collar. I have previously posted these pics over on Rebel Legion's msgboard.
I took the existing 3" wide collar from the coveralls, ripped the seams and ironed it flat. Then I divided it into two L-shaped pieces which I made the flight suit's collar from. The only external seams are along the collar's edges and at the precise back of the neck.

The "overlap" is the width of the flap in the front.
And this is the result:

Oh, and be sure to attach the velcro before sewing it together, or otherwise the seams will be visible, as on CostumeBase's suit. That doesn't look very good.
You could glue the velcro on with a thin layer of fabric glue before stitching - that will help hold it in place and move around as you stitch.

Don't know if this has been addressed before, but notice that Luke's ejection strap isn't attached to the flak vest. Not the most elegant solution (diaper safety pin) but apparently it works in a galaxy far, far away... by the way, Gil, your flightsuit is A-1 awesome in person, too.

Reading this has pushed me into wanting to do an X-wing Pilot.

Im going to start with the suit, I cant sew so I would like to know who is THE BEST and the most accurate. Im not on a timetable and the budget is good.

It looks like, apart from making one yourself or having one made, if you want to go with an ebay suit, you can choose from costumebase, customprops, or evolution.

I would say from what I've heard from many other pilots that they rank in this order:

1. Customprops
2. Costumebase
3. Evolution

The reason customprops wins out over costumebase is because of the lower leg pockets which are missing on the costumebase.

I used the costumebase suit for mine and am very happy with it, but if I do another one, I'll use customprops.

That's how mine stays on. :lol
