The Ultimate X-Wing Pilot Thread

very nice looking helmet!
Nice? Hardly. At a distance, maybe...

What black material did you used for the inside of the helmet for more comfort ?Frank
No, they are not comfortable. They are cushions from a "knee pad". They were difficult to position well inside my helmet. Maybe it would have been easier if the helmet had had an inner dome, I don't know.

The padding is touching my head only in a handful of points. The day before my first troop, I had sun-burned my bald head, which made it downright uncomfortable to troop with the full weight of the fiberglass the day after. I will redo it with larger, softer pads.

Lars, talk about making a Lemonade out of a lemon, man!

Now, I´m starting to look carefully at this thread and I am wondering if ANYONE could point me to the direction of a pattern or at least a tentative pattern for a Flightsuit.

IF that´s not possible, CostumeBay WOULD be a feasible way to go for a BULK of costumes?

Thank you, folks!

Hey jonny5, here's the inside of mine. You were looking at it in Philly at WSMI.

Did you ever get any of the pictures back with your R2 and all of the pilots?

Does anybody know a good source for an APH-6B helmet? Looking to get one for non-conversion purposes.

I'm not even going to try to convince bothanspy to let one of his go. :lol

They come up on ebay occasionally,I had mine on my search list for a while(and I think I found it in the end just randomly looking through helmets-the search feature can suck a bit).

You just have to make sure it's the right version if you want it as an X-wing basis, even an APH-6A with a dual visor conversion will do the trick.

I think the CB flight suit is a pretty solid product for the money. The zipper in the front is plastic, which is my only complaint - it should really be replaced with a metal one. Otherwise, it didn't cost all that much more than the fabric I'd have used to make it!

They also do bulk discounts, which makes it even more affordable.

Doing a search around for components, I found a guy on eBay under the moniker of Evolution Toys Store. He was selling a bunch of X-Wing pilot stuff. Anyone dealt with him before?

Also, the eBay store Designer Threads and Collectibles has the leg flare holders for US$39.99 plus shipping. They're designed for the Elvis Trooper leg flares. Plus shipping, this is more expensive (for me in Australia, at least) than what I've been quoted previously by people on these boards, but I figured I'd throw another option out there.

Be seeing you,

Magnus Darcrider

Evolution Toy Store's flight suit is considered to be quite inaccurate. The most glaring detail is the collar, which is neither long enough or pointy enough.
I found that the leg flare holder took less time to sew together myself than making the leg flares themselves out of wood.

Hey Gill, nice pix. Love all the Aurbesh, and the pop rivets holding the tail of the mowhak are a nice cosmetic yet functional touch.

PM me about those WSMI pix. I had 2 partial droids there and spent most of my time chaperoning someone elses R/C'd droid while mine sat static behind the 'cattle ropes'.

I think I have made a discovery about the soft helmet/cap that the Snowspeeder pilots wear in ESB.
The pattern is likely to have been based on the RAF type D cloth helmet. (Google Search).
The seams of the screen-used match that helmet more than any other that I have seen. The color of the fabric also matches but the RAF helmet has several features that are not in the movie, and the screen-used cap has edge tape that the RAF helmet does not.
The screen-used helmet also has a ridiculously thin chin strap - which also tells me that it is unlikely that they would have been using real flight helmets.

The inner helmet had the "G" helmet inserts in them. You can see the out line under the helmet.
Thanks. Are these still manufactured?

This helmet looks almost like it minus the leather headset holder.
There are a few similiarities, and a few differences. Most of all, the helmet needs to be tailored to fit the foam inserts, and this one does not seem to have it.

I don't suggest that everyone who wants to dress up as an ESB pilot gets the "D" helmet. That helmet was not used, only likely to have loaned its pattern to the one in the movie.
If I get hold of the pattern somehow (by buying a real D-type helmet, or parts, or loaning a helmet from a collector) I will make it available to those costumers who want it.

The screen-used helmet also used an edge tape that was not bias tape, but ribbed. Has anyone seen that kind of tape in a fabric store?

And just a couple more with final detailing and weathering applied.Might have to thin down the mohawk stripe if I make another one.

I think a half inch stripe would be more like it from that comparison.i did that one at about 16mm.
