The Ultimate X-Wing Pilot Thread

The food capsules is a prequel thing for the Jedi.
I've seen the belt cylinders listed as mini flares.
They could even be ammo or extra batteries of the chest pack, who knows. LOL

With a 2" web belt they are 2 1/4" long and 5/16" dia.

batteries make sense.. or even fuses.. 5\16"! I'll go with that. thanks for the help. now i can finish the belt!

One of the great things I like about Star Wars is that since it is a fantasy movie as opposed to sci-fi, the designs focus more on making a visual impact as opposed to making scientific sense. The problem is that as fans, we cannot leave well enough alone and we want to delve into how these items work. I know the visual dictionary has some info but I know that a lot of that stuff is just pulled out of the air for the sake of creating the book.

When I think about the X-Wing pilot and the suit and what items might be, I tend to think about what they might need if they eject and would have to survive in space till found.

So what are the items on the waist and leg? Flares seem like something that would be reasonable. I also think that they could be items that could be loaded into the chest box. through the silver port or knob in the front. Could the capsules on the legs reserve air? Could the items o the belt be medications injected in the chest box that help fight against radiation exposure?

I also believe the controls of the arm of the suit is a readout regarding life signs and suit status. People keep calling these comlinks but the helmet has coms while in the ship and R1 established that the pilots had comlinks as seen in The Empire Strikes Back on the gloves.

I also believe the legstraps were originally designed to keep the vest in place during ejection or some other type severe movement. I believe they were influence by the legstraps on parachutes. I am well aware that for costuming purposes the strap is pinned to the upper part of the suit and because of that, the strap leads to nowhere in The Empire Strikes Back when they added the cold weather jacket. Which I believe goes back to they focus more on visuals than how things work (which I am not knocking).

Another line of thinking is that the legstraps have another function. If we look at Poe and the sequel era, those leg straps are attached to the belt. Could legstraps have some sort of g-suit function?

Anyhow, that's what I think about when my wife is talking to me.

Well the influence of the leg flares comes from this.

I never really thought about the ones on the belt.

I think the part i really love about Star Wars is that everything eventually has function even if it was just put there for looks early on. Someone is deciding what this thing could have done, and sometimes they actually get used in a movie or a show, and i actually think that's important. All the visual guides have these functions as part of what makes those books valuable. It doesn't matter if its in a vague area of a starship or on the countertops of Beru's kitchen. Yeah someone made it up and that makes it fun.. and sometimes i do not agree with what it should be. :)

If you have ever hung out with a kid while in costume, you realize the kids love to ask questions... when they see things, they want to know "what does that do?" or "what is that for?" while they point at random bits on your plastic belt. And really, we are all just kids doing make believe. So part of that wonder is what makes all this worth while and interesting.
I could make stuff up to tell them, and i have when i didn't know what the "official narrative" was, but we as costumers have also spent hours discussing how the blade on the back of a speeder bike might work, or what those drop boxes on the biker scout armor might do or how they could function.. or what the heck are those belt capsules on the x-wing pilot?
So its nice to get consensus. Whether or not it actually does something or just looks cool.
Now as a pilot, which i am one in the real world, i can look at the belt and say "what would i need to carry on my belt that i could not put in my pocket?" It's got to be something that getting into a pocket might not serve in the best way. That, to me, would mean it has to be something i would need in the cockpit, where getting to a pocket might not work very well without spilling those things all over inside and then having them rattle all over the canopy while you are doing maneuvers.
Part of my reasoning is that there are none of those on the back. Only on the front or sides. Also, having those in your pockets would make a ton of noise.. if they were metal. You would hear every pilot all over the ship, jingling as they walk.. that would not make command very happy.
So what could those be? Maybe some dont care, and they can do without the reason.. and thats cool, but i still want to have an answer for the kids, or even for myself. I have a few ideas and some guesses.. its probably not that important here.. so maybe ill just go back to building my suit. And when i get it all done, ill look into it more so i have something i can tell the kid and brighten his day knowing he talked to a real x-wing pilot.

Kudos to you guys for helping us all build the best costume we can. I always look forward to Star Wars discussion time.

So, what is everyone using for the "correct" fabric on the X-wing vest? Does it have a specific name? Is there one or two good places we are all getting it from? thanks again!

My first 3 where cotton, the newest one is just cheap Jo-Ann's nylon.

I still haven't found anything close to correct to make a screen accurate one.
I spent a fair amount of time a few years ago looking.

About the only questions I ever get asked are if the blaster or saber work or are real.
I just tell them the power cell is removed due to event guide lines, for safety.

Had some woman on an elevator ask me if I was a terrorist since I had a box on my chest. (pre 9/11)

Don't know if it's common knowledge already, but the oxygen mask on the prototype helmet appears to be based on an RAF H-type oxygen mask:

Details like the loops on either side of the nose, the microphone up front and the mesh filters (where the hoses would appear to connect in the prototype) and the overall shape seem to line up correctly.

started working on the patterns for the vest. I'm planning on making a test vest before the real deal just to see if there's any math I got wrong.. and also to test the tubing etc. here's a couple photos

I believe the edging of the X-Wing Vest is Cotton Twill Tape, you can get it in various lengths and widths, comparing the weave of the tape with both Original Trilogy and Rogue One Vests I'm fairly certain it's that, I think the tape may also have been used for the shoulder straps on the Rogue One Version but I can't be certain.

The Adjustment Strap appears to be a strip of Webbing, possibly Nylon, that's what I've seen used most often in fan makes.

For the Main Sections, I'm thinking maybe Nylon but I really can't be certain.

Ok, I have a lot of thoughts and questions running through my head.

I believe everything on the original vest is the same nylon material which is probably chosen due to it's flame retardant nature . Now one thing I have to wonder is if there is both a found vest and replicated vest used in the OT. I don't know.

I guess the prevailing theory is that the vest is part of an atmospheric style flight suit. We also believe the flight suits and vest have shown up in sci-fi productions prior to A New Hope. I always assumed that these vest like the firearms used in the movie were items found and rented through a prop house in the UK. I don't know.

So what I have to wonder is, did these productions have enough go the actual found items for there needs or did they have to replicate the items in order to meet their needs? Of course another possibility is that when they actually created the vest for flight purposes, the production method changed over time. I don't know.

Take a look at this image.

anhpilots.jpg

There is anywhere from 20-25 vests in this picture. I find it hard to believe that even a prop house had acquired such a high number of actual original vests. I mean maybe they did, weirder things have happened. Did the prop house replicate them for some other previous production or could LFL have replicated more to meet their numbers? I don't know.

Well they most likely made at least some of them since there was 40+ in the final Grand Hall Ceremony scene.
I count about 35/45+ at the rear of the hall plus the others at the front.
