The Thing prequel

Enjoyed it, but still hate the fact its CGI heavy. The only way to do this any justice is to go heavy on the practical effects. I will be seeing it on the big screen no matter what though.

I'm as big a Rob Bottin fan as there can be but the concept of a Shape changing creature like the thing begs for good CGI treatment. "Practical" doesn't automatically mean better. I can't wait to see "Thing Tentacles" that have life and purpose rather than floppy rubber tubes shot in reverse.

There is just as much bad rubber effects out there as bad CG effects.

Appears to be normal. :)

I thought this movie was a reboot. So let me get this straigt...the prequel to "the Thing" is called "the Thing"?

They couldn't think of a better name than well "The THING". Its still technically the same story just showing the before. Aside from the confusion its been causing I honestly would have been let down if they gave it some bull**** title like "The THING, before it began" or something like that.

I was a little disappointed to see so much CGI but it is understandable considering the task to be done. I really have hope that this film wont suck. The THING is my number 1 favorite horror film and I'de hate to see a crappy prequel to one of my all time favorite films. The fact the the creators have a true passion for the carpenter film will hopefully make this film tie in 100% with the carpenter one. IE frozen man with wrist's and throat slashed. Semi two headed thing found mostly burnt (looks like they got that one). Axe stuck in the door.

I will be severely disappointed if anyone other than the two Norwegians from the helicopter chasing the dog survive. There better not be any of this "we cant kill the lead role or and love story crap"

They will probably have the lead wander off into a snow storm or something at the end leaving it up to the audience to decide the fate of the character...it's never been done before.

It looks cool........because it is exactly the same as the first JC Thing. :angry

Nothing original about it.

Well to be fair, what in Hollywood these days is not simply a rehash of another movie...only with different actors?

I'm still looking forward to this one.

i dont have much faith in this movie,
the whole camp is supposed to be a different nationality and language than americans.. so it already kind of screws with the established facts of the original movie.

Saw the new trailer. Gotta say, it all looks pretty standard... except for the hook thing stabbing through that dude's chest.... that looked SUB-standard.

It was a Norwegian camp, that doesn't mean no one there speaks English. There's no way that no one there would speak English, and likely multiple ones would, because there is a lot of US work done there and they need to be able to communicate with the American camps. It just happens that the one survivor who chases the dog to the American camp didn't speak English, and in fact spoils the whole plot of JC's "The Thing" to audience members who speak the language.

Are we really complaining about the lack of originality in the movie being a prequel to Carpenter's The Thing? ... because The Thing was a remake itself.

I've got a feeling that a majority of the Norwegians at the camp knew how to speak English, but the last two that ended up surviving the aftermath to chase the Dog-Thing to Outpost #31 probably had one who did and one who didn't. And its likely the one who could speak English was the one who handled the grenade and got blown up, while the one who didn't know how to speak English was the one that Garry shoots.

Another possibility is that they both could speak English, but due to the emotional stress of the events they've gone through, the one who shot at the Dog-Thing and eventually got shot by Garry, was probably so emotionally stressed to think straight and that he needed to speak English. From what I've seen in other films, with characters that speak two languages, they normally revert to their native tongue when they're frightened or angry (which makes sense form a psychological point of view, because if you knew two languages, would you swear in English if you were frightened out of your wits or would you swear in the second language you had to learn). A good example is Monica Bellucci in Irreversible. Before she is raped, she tries to get away from Le Tenia after witnessing him beating the prostitute. At one point, she screams "help" in Italian. Since the film itself had no script and dialogue was improvised by the actors and actresses, it's safe to say that at the moment (at the choice of the actress), Monica's character would have been so frightened, she'd scream in her native tongue.

So, it's possible that there may be characters in the film that speak fluent Norwegian and English, while there are those that do not know how to speak English and need translators. From what we know of the first film, there was never any indication that there wasn't anyone who didn't speak any English at the Norwegian camp. With the information we have, we know a majority of the people at the Norwegian camp were Norwegian. So, the possibility of one, or at least two, being American is still possible just by what is presented in the first film alone, as we don't have a lot of info about the Norwegian camp and the individuals there from Carpenter's film. All we got from Carpenter's film about the Norwegians is what they were doing, where they found the ship and a foreshadow of what was going to happen at Outpost 31. We do not know anything about who they were, if they could speak English as a second language or how all of them came to their demise (only about three individuals do we know for sure, the rest we assume became things or were killed because they were thought to be things).

I'm hopeful for this. The early buzz is positive - so, I've got fingers crossed and this is definitely on my 'go see' list.
