Hey Guys,

Just wanted to let people know, and get some discussion going about the new Roxy Cinema that opened up in Miramar, Wellington not 5 minutes from WETAs front door.

Miramar's former Capitol Theatre, built in 1928, has had a $7 million revamp as The Roxy thanks to some of the biggest players in the film industry including Sir Peter Jackson, Jamie Selkirk, Sir Richard Taylor and his wife Tania Rodger.

It boasts an opulent, 1930s interior and includes two cinemas - one seating 164 people and the other 55 - along with a restaurant and cocktail bar. Weta Workshop has been involved in the refit, contributing bronze, sculptured robots in the grand hall.

Today I believe was the first day the cinema was open to the public so I headed down to check it out. It really is one of the most beautiful cinemas I have ever been in. Strong art deco influences but with lots of convenient modern touches. The cinemas themselves are small in (a good way) with big big leather bound armchairs, first thing that hit me when I walked in was the smell of leather and new carpets. looking up into the projectionists booth it looked like it housed some serious gear. I saw no evidence of noisy smelly popcorn or giant cups of soda, just some old fashioned sweets behind the ticket counter and ice creams.

outside the walls are covered in old original film posters circa clark gable, and the little touches really make it, I believe I spied bronze Rocketeer uplights?

The huge ceiling mural on the top floor is amazing. The painting feels very familiar, I think it must be by a local artist but depicts a massive robot :love

I only had time to grab a hot chocolate (In the equally lovely attached coffee shop/restaurant) The selection of films were strong (Black Swan, True Grit, Rango & Kings Speech) But what caught my eye was that Peter Jacksons King Kong was playing. Hopefully they show some older films in the futre, double features, Lord of the rings night etc. all the kind of things us geeks would love to see on the big screen. It feels like a cinema run by people who love film.

Ticket prices are the same as the cinemas in town, and if I were them I would be very very worried!

If there is any interest I can take a camera down this weekend and take some pictures of the interior, light fittings, ceiling etc.
