The Rocketeer Returns!

It was 2002. I know because I had to skip Dragon that year due to helping a friend through some cancelled-wedding drama. Missing my last chance to see DS just makes the memory of that time all the more bitter, and I make sure to rub that in to my friend at every opportunity.

Wow... my memory sucks. Hard to believe that was almost a decade ago now. I'm really glad I got to meet him just once. He had been to DC a couple of times prior but I missed him every other time. That was back when I had a screen-used helmet. I took it to the con to see if I could get him to authenticate it for me. He was hesitant to say anything definitive about it and I later got it authenticated by the movie's propmaster in L.A. but I did get a photo of him, me and the helmet. I look like a total dork in the photo but it's still a nice memory to have evidence of.

Now, I really, really hate how I look in the photo with Dave but since you asked I dug 'em up... the first is from my trip to L.A. where I got the hero helmet authenticated around 8 years ago (2003 I guess? - I had to sell it a few years ago unfortunately and have missed it every single day since) and the second photo is from DragonCon of Dave and I which would have been 2002. I tried to find a scan of the little DS sketch I bought but haven't located it... it's buried under tons of other Rocketeer images I've saved from the web but you guys would appreciate it.

Y'know, part of the problem with the way tv shows are done here in the good ol' US of A' is that they are planned to just go on and on and on with no end in site until the ratings bottom out and it gets canceled (usually before it's wrapped up properly.) Granted there are a few exceptions but that's generally the way it's done because we here in the capitol of capitalism have to have our ongoing franchises which can be milked indefinitely for their infinite revenue streams.

If they ditched that model and put a decent budget into one stand-alone season at a time with a story that mostly ties up at the end -- I mean really planned out a 12 episode season (or even 6 if you followed the Walking Dead model) - they could do something freaking awesome with the Rocketeer. And the show would fit perfectly with the AMC network.

AMC would probably be the best bet for a Rocketeer show. Anyone else and the material won't get the justice it deserves. However, they tend to show serious shows. I liked Walking Dead but it is serious and dark. I would hope a Rocketeer show would be in the same spirit as the movie and comic. Hopefully with a full on pinup Bettie. Maybe with some inspiration from Dita von Teese. Although, I don't have a problem with the Jenny Blake character. How can you when it's Jennifer Connelly?

It's weird, but there is some sort of separation Disney has put up between them and the Rocketeer character. Originally, in Sky High, I had scripted out some easter eggs that were supposed to be in display cases throughout the school. I had written in the script that both the Condorman costume and Rocketeer gear could be seen in the hallways - then they has me move the Rocketeer stuff to the Stronghold Secret Sanctum - (when Steve's collection spanned all the way back to his grandfather, who I guess knew the Rocketeer) then they reduced it just to the helmet - then when the collection became trinkets from bad guys the helmet was tossed and replaced by a Tin Man looking thing. I thought maybe Dave Stevens said No when they asked if they could put the helmet in the movie - but was told he was all for it and actually thought it was funny. They just tossed it for no reason. It was the perfect plan too - for me to shamelessly connect my hum drum movie to a classic.

They are coming out with a hardcover collecting Dave Stevens' four sketchbooks now. They missed adding a few of the Bettie drawings from these books to the Rocketeer Complete Edition. I don't know if I'll pick this up as they aren't adding anything else to the package and I have the signed versions of the sketchbooks. So the only bonus will be the larger size and higher quality pages. Maybe the DVD will finally show up at comic con with all this Rocketeer interest?

A friend of mine used to own an original Stevens drawing of the Rocketeer and Bettie done during the production of the film - the cool thing was this drawing was life size - the Rocketeer standing at 6ft 1 and Bettle behind him arms around his chest (as if being protected) Bettie was drawn more to resemble Jennifer Connelly, wearing the dress she wore at the end of the movie. It was done in pencil and black (almost sharpie looking) inks. He had it framed and it took up a good portion of the wall in his family room. i wish he still had it but he sold it year ago to a collector.

A life size Stevens Rocketeer drawing?! I've never heard of this. I didn't finish reading Brush with Passion however. I need to see pictures of this.

Yeah, a lifesize drawing like that... man, something like that I bet would sell for a pretty penny. Would love to see that myself though if it's in a private collector's hands... well, private collectors are often called "private" for a reason :lol

And that last picture nickytea linked to is arguably the coolest Rocketeer anything I've seen in a long, long time. I love that style of art and the rendering on that is just beautiful. Can't wait to see the full piece.

the mini-series Rocketeer Adventures were released today!!!!!!!

Got 4 of the 6 variants.........

the stories are very short.....Mike Allred's artwork is absolutely horrendous....jim silke does a great pinup tribute to betty page......looking at the artwork just makes me miss Dave Stevens even more.... :(

It's not the cheap way of doing it but there's lots of them on ebay... I paid more than I should have and I still need to get two of the variant covers. I hope IDW isn't going to go variant cover crazy after the first issue... I'm not going to be able to keep up with them all if they do and that would offend the completist in me.
