The Rocketeer Returns!

I too prefer the look of the movie rocketpack. I think Stevens designed or tweaked the movie version as well. In one of his books he talks about the design. I hope the artists they have do their best work for this project. They need the artwork to be more illustrated than comic art, if that makes any sense.

I heard very little small talk at comic con about it.

I was hoping to see Jim Lee or Adam Hughes as artists, but it looks highly unlikely.

As for the rocketpack, I prefer the movie rocketpack..the movie pack is more well-known to people and I prefer the looks of it more.

I am hoping it isnt one adventure, but multiple mini adventures throughout the series..Maybe switching packs here and there.

I am surprised IDW has the rights now..That is one of the problems of the rocketeer, you can never tell who has the rights for comics, movies, figures, statues, helmets, etc etc...IDW is doing a great job though, it came out with the rocketeer complete edition book and the artist edition book

Dark Horse was suppose to continue a comic series after Cliff's New York Adventure, but nothing happened.

Yeah, I was wondering if this had something to do with Dave's family giving the green light to all of this... it's one of the reasons I have a bit of mixed feelings about it all, particularly considering how gung-ho IDW is being about.

As awesome as it is to see new Rocketeer stuff, it comes across a little bit to me personally less as a memorial kind of thing and more of a "hey, we got our hands on the rights to this franchise so let's "franchise" it up!" Again, I'm NOT saying that's the case... but it just kinda seems that way a bit to me.

I know they were working on the book Brush with Passion while he was alive but all the talk of new comics and stuff... I just dunno. It's why I have some mixed feelings though.

If I remember right, when I met him at DragonCon, Dave said he could still do comics but it was something like he wanted to do it really nice like a full color graphic novel and the publishers didn't want to do it that way. He did tell me he had other ideas for stories though so I wonder if he wrote any of that down.

He was definitely one of the friendliest guys I've ever met at DragonCon. I can see how true it was when the book Brush with Passion talks about how he'd stop work for hours just to talk to people that came by his studio. Definitely a friendly, sociable kind of guy.

I totally agree with you that it doesnt seem like a memorial kind of thing. It does seem like they are just trying to franchise it up to see how much money they can get from the rights...The Idw complete rocketeer adventure is coming out with their second edition already. The book is great and I think they did an amazing job with it, but already coming out with a second edition? The artist edition is pretty cool too.

Brush with Passion was published by spectrum publishing and underwood books..Once it sold out, it went out of print and there is no talks for a second release which is what I like. This was the perfect way to do a Memorial Book...

I remember reading somewhere that some proceeds from the mini series will go to the Leukemia Foundation. I am hoping it is a large percentage

Yeah I'm surprised to see SO MUCH Rocketeer stuff coming out now that Dave passed away, really said when you think about it since it was his baby. He had to fight with the studio and license holders to get stuff out and now the flood gates have opened. I know he was a stickler with accuracy and his work and he wouldn't sign off on anything unless he was 110% happy with it. I'm wondering if the license holders were tired of waiting on him to ok things. But I understand, I don't want my name associated with crap merchandise just to make a buck.

I was an rare aquaintance of Dave's and have friends that really knew him.

He intentionally and unintentionally kept stuff from coming out honestly. He always wanted a better publishing deal than what were being offered to him and that never materialized. Dave was a little too laid back and little too much of a perfectionist, a weird dichotomy, but that's what made him great too.

As far as the new series goes, If you look at the line up of artists and writers, it's all people who really only work on personal and passion projects. They aren't doing this for the money. Everyone in the industry deeply loves Dave and have nothing but great respect for his legacy.

Nick

I can definitely understand why he would want a better publishing deal after the way disney treated him....

And I am sure the artists are all doing it out of respect for dave and his legacy. It just slightly seems that IDW is doing much for than caring on his legacy..It just seems that way. I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong.

I am really happy a lot of items are finally coming out. I love the rocketeer bust, electric tiki statue, and PF sideshow figure. They all have their flaws, but they are still great items..

I really hoping most proceeds will go to the leukemia foundation.

IDW is also a company that needs to make a profit at the end of the day too. They ain't spending hours in an office building editing, printing and shipping books around the world for charity. :)

Comics is a tough business to make work.

Nick

It's always a great thing when proceeds are donated so lets hope that money truly makes its way into the right hands.
I'm also wonering if we would see another Rocketeer movie? If I'm not mistaken, it was the challenge of going up against Prince of Thieves that made Rocketeer underperform at the BO.

i love idw, they're taking my two childhood loves and doing stellar work with them when no comic company has done anything good with them, and now they're doing rocketeer?

awesome. when can i get it?

Honestly, I'm happy with the Complete Rocketeer Deluxe and the Artist Edition. If the new comic doesn't have the quality of the original, they shouldn't do it. My hope is that the comic is good but it needs to be well drawn and written. I don't want some quick and sketchy Rocketeer story.

EvilRocketeer - Did you see Jim Lee's media room Rocketeer poster? Do you know who drew it?

I'm cautious but hopeful as well. About 90% of my attraction to the Rocketeer was Stevens and his art. But I also like the concept, and the period, so....maybe.

At best (for me), it'll be a nice "better than nothing" thing, but not really the same animal. The original creator is "THE" version. For example, I'm not really interested in post-Caniff Terry and the Pirates, or post-Raymond Flash Gordon, etc.

Yeah... the curse of being sandwiched between Prince of Thieves and of course T2 which wound up being THE blockbuster of 1991.

In a perverted sort of way it's nice being the "underdog" but at the same time being the "underdog" also means you don't get all the cool stuff a big successful movie brings...

And also, of course, Disney has always treated the movie as the red-headed stepchild of the family. Heaven only knows if or when we'll even see the movie on Blu-Ray, much less ever get a special edition. I'm dumbfounded that they were such nickle-nursers ( ;) ) that they didn't even get Dave to do an audio commentary while he was still alive. That's bordering on "criminal" negligence to me and many other hardcore fanboys...

I missed nabbing the Complete Deluxe Edition when it first hit the stands... I'm hoping to get one off of ebay but they tend to go for $100 now. I was absolutely NOT going to pass up the Artist's Edition.

I AM happy to see some stuff coming out and hearing Nick's take on the situation does offer some comfort. As long as IDW treats the franchise with respect, I'm cool with it and will give them the benefit of the doubt. And of course, I'll snap up everything I can afford and be jealous of ER for all the stuff I can't ;)

do you have a picture of it? maybe I can figure it out

I have to get the image off my other computer. I can't seem to find it when I do a search on the Internet. Jim Lee was showing his computer setup or something and there was a large movie poster sized image of the Rocketeer and one of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell prints. I was going to catch Jim Lee at a convention and ask (when I get him to sign my Absolute Hush).

when he signs hush, you should also thank him for making wonderwoman suck more.

I actually like the new Wonder Woman design a bit. But I think the costume she gets after she fixes the timeline will be the true costume redesign. People are getting upset about nothing.

Anyway, I attached the Rocketeer image in Lee's room. I thought the image showed more of the poster. I'm still pretty sure it is The Rocketeer. This was from a few years ago.

Yeah, that's the Rocketeer but I don't think it's any image I've ever seen and I've been at this for a while... It's gotta be some kind of custom thing. Maybe art done by another artist or fan and given to him (?). It's certainly not a mass produced item, that's for sure. Even limited quantity prints or other rare collectibles have a way of popping up SOMEWHERE... either on ebay or on art collector forums or the like. But I can't say I've ever seen that one before.
