The PEPAKURA question thread - PLEASE READ RULES IN FIRST POST!

well, you "can" as reference :D but you cant simply transform a 2d pattern into a 3d one, it only works the other way around (there probably is some kind of software that would be able to do that, but it would still take work, and im not even sure if such software exists)
 
i just thought it would be cool to take the pdf files and import them as a 2d model and then tell the pep program to join lines. kind of like reverse manual unfolding. thus building a 3D model backwards. from there it could be exported/modified.

i know of at least one pep i'd love to do this to!
 
the only real thing i could think of (which probably is more work than remodeling the whole thing) is building it out of paper, and use the photographic 3d generator software, that generates a model from a bunch of pictures

the way it works is, you have a model, make a couple of hundred photos from 360°, then import them into the software, and that will calculate you the 3d model. you do need to have a blank background for it tho, and a good camera.
its really more work than remodelling. gives some decent results tho, if you do it right

could probably be used if you make pics at cons (like the iron man mk8 statue that was even turning, if someone wouldve set up a tripod and made a photoseries, you could basicly just make the 3d model from that)
 
oh... well thats a great tool. i mean the pep i'd want to apply this to, i'm already building... the 3d generator software wouldnt come as freeware would it?

Great minds think alike!! Was looking at this the other day, very impressive bit of software! Teamed with 3D printing, will make many a person's life easier. Although, I think a lot of us here will stick to traditional methods due to love of the process itself (The process is an adventure to me, not a destination. I guess when you find the love in your life its like that?... vvery philosophical today LOL :lol).

My curiosity was piqued by Autodesk's 123D catch application. So, I gave it a try and was not very impressed with the results. Maybe after a dozen tries after tweaking lighting, focus and reference points you might get a decent looking model with texture, but the mesh generated after all the adjustments still looks like a rat's nest. There is no substitute for an aspiring 3D artist and 3D modeling software. Except for maybe a 3D scanner:lol no even so the hand of an artist is still necessary to get the job done.

Folks, with all the pictures you take of your subject for that program, you can better use them for reference to model it yourself.

Although this app may prove fun for the uninitiated, it is true that 123D simply doesn’t mean 1-2-3 done.

Who isn't philosophical? By the general definition of the word everyone is philosophical.

True true, although I think for those who cant outright model and can do basic retopology and mesh editting, this software will be most useful to them as well as the general consumer with no knowledge of skill in physical creation - much like the general 3d printer customer base (as in shapeways etc) xD
 
i have to say, i tried it with 60 high res pics of the mk 8 iron man armor, and i got nothing out of it, except for a bad model of the background
 
can someone explain how to measure hands and feet for ironman man pdo files, its only part i find hard to do thanks ;D
 
anyone know where to find good Neon Genesis files? I think my buddy and I are gonna build EVAs together.
 
I personnaly found that pepakura is an easier medium to work in that foam, hoewever foam has its advantages. I would start by using pepakura, resining and then fibreglassing then bondoing and then painting. With regards to paint, if I were doing an Iron man armour, which I am currently doing, I use a black paint for the base, then using the metallica reds and golds on top, the black base seems to give it a deeper colour and finish, which makes the armour look more metallic
 
Pepakura First Time, Tips Wanted!

Hello! I am about to embark on making my first pepakura build. I am making an ironman helmet as most people do, but I have a question or two. I did search theRPF but couldn't find this question anywhere.
What is the best glue to use? A lot of people use hot glue, but I don't have access to that, and it would seem to thick/messy for paper. Would super glue be better? or at least work well?

I am also doing my first pepakura buid. (Dr. Doom)
From the reading I've done, hot glue is the preferred method. Superglue is too instantaneous and rough on the fingers. I assume you are using card stock paper for your build? It's pretty durable.

Hot glue is easy to get off the skin, and pretty safe beyond the discomfort of hot glue on your hands.. Plus it can be reheated for repositioning in the event of a mistake.
I would spend the 8fingers bucks ( or less) for a gun and bag of glue sticks.
