The PEPAKURA question thread - PLEASE READ RULES IN FIRST POST!

You can do so, but you would going a more expensive route.

You don't have to use Fiberglass. Its just another optional step to strengthening the PEP work, without adding weight.

Most people are fine with just Resin and rondoing a couple of layers, and then using putty to fix any imperfections. but of course, Bondo/Rondo is a lot heavier than using fiberglass.

What is it about fiberglass that you are worried about?

hey thanks for the quick reply!

Well, hopefully it isn't sheer laziness, I think it is more that I have school starting up in a month, and have little time outside of work. I suppose I picture just a lot of more work with the fiberglass. Plus it honestly looks like a pain in the tookus:) I have also experimented with HDPE and ABS samples, which seem pretty nice!

Ideally, I'd like to make something that I'm able to mold and rotocast later, but like I said I'd like it to be more rigid than foam... I'm basically trying to get the base done this summer so I can have it for halloween, and likely mold and cast next summer. Thank you for your input! :thumbsup

It always confuses me that people have a stigma about fibreglass being DANGEROUS or HARD to do xD

Resins usually have the same health effects if no protection is used, and Fibreglass matting is easier to do IMO than slushing into PEP.

One trick with the matting, is to use some 3M industrial strength adhesive spray and glue in the matting softly (dont spray too much glue so the resin can seep all the way through), that way itll sit happily when you back the glass with the resin ;)

yeah spray glue is the way to go.

when i did my war machine, i just tried to use the resin to keep the fiberglass in place, dont do that.
its messy and gives mediocre results

Yeppppp! Not stuck matting tends to peel away and cause spikes when it cures. Also pre sticking the matting is a stress free way of ensuring the matt covers all sharp areas in the pep when glassing.

(Also, yayyy WB EOS!, seems your net is working again :D:thumbsup)

Any good helmet Pep Files?

I basically said the same thing in a replica costume thread but if any of you guys happen to have a good, old pep file for a helmet (storm trooper, a HALO helmet or even Iron man) it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Re: Any good helmet Pep Files?

did you even care to use the search function? theres a gazillion of pep files on iron man, halo, and star wars

also there are at least 3 Rocketeer helmets, alltho i dont know what you would see as decent. They are pretty good in my eyes tho ;)

well, I can really only speak for myself, but I don't think it would necessarily dangerous or hard, but having not worked with bondo or fiberglass+resin, I think your average person might see it as (like I was trying to say) potentially more time consuming. This is of course when you factor in a more detailed pep than with foam, resin on the outside, adhesive+fiberglass+resin on the inside, bondo, sanding, etc. on the outside, then paint... So having nursing school starting back up in about a month, I've been searching around about more "thrifty" methods with good results :) thanks for your input though! I might just do a fiberglass build! :thumbsup

by the way, I do have a pretty good understanding of how to work fiberglass, bondo, etc... I'm pretty new too, so I gotta tell you guys asking about resin problems, etc. you MUST check out Stealth's youtube (HeroTurorials) videos on fiberglassing pep files... It's a very good place to start!:thumbsup

And of course, there are invaluable resources on the Smooth-On website and Xrobots.co.uk, google 'em if you haven't already! :thumbsup

well,i want to build a liberator cruiser for the star wars, the one apear in the game star wars rebelion, and also for the same game the bulwark battle-cruiser, some one have the pdo files for this 2 ships??, i would really appreciated it

Any suggestions on an easy to learn program to make a file for pepakura?
Im looking to do a Destro head.
Im just hoping to do the basic shape.
Not to worried about going nuts on the detail.
As it is, the old Destro head wasnt too detailed to begin with.
So please, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Ironman Pep help?

Hi all! My friend has recently started working for me and my small prop-company, and is new to prop and replica making. He's also a huge Ironman fan. I have never done any Pep work before, but I've seen wonderful builds done here using those templates! Does anyone know where I can find a good open-source pep file that can be printed out without any special program needed to read it? (We have photoshop but that's about it.) I thought as a fun project we could do together and help him learn would be to help him build an Ironman mask. I don't think he has a particular version he prefers. We certainly got some good fiberglass and bondo practice on the recent Dark Helmet project!

Any help? I figured this would be a better present to him than buying him a gundam-model kit! hah.

there are pdf versions of certain pep files.

you can also just download the non-licensed version of pepakura designer, because if you have a 3d model, its way easier to figure out how to work something, also you can change the scale, the only thing you cant do is save. so just write down the scale, then you dont need to save anyway.

simple, really

no

i dont see how that would be possible (even importing it into any program)

thats like you would be trying to import a word document into a 3d program to get 3 dimensional text ;)
