The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

Interesting!

Keep us informed of your custom case!

I personally thought Star Wars ( A New Hope...) had a few colour issues throughout the Tatooine scenes....seemed to be a slight pinky/purpley haze to things now and then. It was sort of intermittent, but not too distracting. I also found it to be a bit darker than any other version i've watched. But the sound, gee-whizz, the sound!

I got mine today walking through the storms (from the car park) to HMV (had some vouchers)

Star Wars is what my wife has dubbed "my happy place", we sat and watched Jedi tonight and I don't think its any worse than it's ever been. Looks fantastic in Blu Ray and maybe i'm imagining it, but there is a slightly better feel to the pace of the film.......but that may be imaginary.

I'm glad they haven't added a load of new or deleted scenes, and as far as I can tell, i'll still sleep well tonight regardless whether Vader say's NO or sings a medley of Glenn Campbell songs

I had been thinking that I might at least go see Star Wars in 3-D, but I'm having my doubts now. The changes just drive me crazy.

All this talk got me to watch the laserdisc rips again this week. It's amazing how much better everything flows in the original edits. Without the Jedi Rocks and the beaky-Sarlacc, I can actually suffer through the Jabba section. I haven't watched that part of Jedi in probably ten years, other than a couple of screen-grab runs.

Also? The angry "Bring my shuttle" is completely badass. Oh, George. I wish I still had my fake "Screw you!" letter I made up when the 2004 DVDs came out.

The addition of the shuttle scene in the SE is SUCH a bad judgement call.
Not only does it interrupt the tension and super fast pace of that part of the film, it totally removes the audience's ability to see Vader's frustration.
He's pissed/frustrated that his elaborate plan to capture Luke fell apart.
And he's also in a hurry to get back to his star destroyer so he might have another opportunity to salvage his failed plan.
But not in the SE version. He has all the time in the world. He just strolls along calmly and slowly.
Huge fail IMO.
I'd bet that George felt that without adding a transition shot showing how Vader got to his star destroyer, people wouldn't understand how he got from point A to point B.

I think those changes by Lucas is ok. I can see the point about losing some of the tempo, but the added scenes gives a bigger scale to it all. I also like that it ties it together with ROTJ.

The original cut where Vader goes from one planet to a ship the size of a big city felt a little too quick and easy.

I TOTALLY agree with GINO, here.

I honestly hadn't even thought about that scene in forever, but the changes made and the resulting feeling from what GINO pointed out are the perfect example of why some of us are so upset.

Attempting to add "scale" or dumbed-down explanation to an already monumentally huge galaxy and well-told story is in no way an excuse to replace a perfectly acceptable and effective scene.

Boom.

To me it seems that the characters lose depth in every scene that is altered or added:

Jabba loses his mystery and exciting reveal in ROTJ

Han is no longer as ruthless after he shoots second

R2 didn't have to be behind MORE rocks for Obi-Wan not to see him

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, (too late) the lightsabers don't seem as uniformly awesome when they're rendered in pansy colors

The thing with Vader that GINO mentioned above

etc, etc.

I guess maybe for me it's all about the power of your imagination to fill in the gaps and the disdain you feel when you feel like you're being treated like an idiot and need everything spelled out for you.

I realize those are not Lucas' intentions, to make us feel dumb (or are they, lol), but it does have that effect on some of us.

I dont think its dumbed down. Actually the added scenes are very SW. Sure, we would understand that Luke landed on Dagobah, or that Han has arrived to Cloud City or Vader landing on Endor without showing any travels. But its more interesting to see swooshing clips when they fly and land there. It gives details to the world they are in and it feels SW.

Just picked up my copy. Don't care about the movies , it's the extra disks with all the crystal clear props and models I can get my hands on that counts... Going home to watch them now.

No, no, no. The travel scenes that were originally there are fine. I think you're missing our point.

When I first saw Empire, I didn't ask,

"Hey, where'd Vader go? Wait, is he still on Cloud City or did he get a ride back to his Star Destroyer?"

I never had any sort of misunderstanding as to his whereabouts, and I don't need a shot of his shuttle flying to know that after he requests, "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" that he did indeed get on his shuttle and fly back to his Star Destroyer.

"Bring my shuttle" is PERFECT.

i agree with you, but you know whats really scarey... the fact that lucas said the orginal movies when released in the day were only 25-30% of what he intended them to be.. i think thats crap but it may very well be the truth.. needless to say im not buying the bluray, ill stick to the originals....

btw.. if he trys ****ing with my childhood hero.. Indiana Jones... ill go to skywalker ranch myself and destroy that rock

This Obi Wan cry bollocks. It's not just that it's crap, it's also the fact that it's so appallingly amateurish. It honestly sounds like the kind of rubbish me and my mates did when we were 15 and were first twatting about with echo boxes in our band. Why all that frigging echo?? And why does the voice sound like some teenage dork if it's supposed to be a flipping dragon??

Yeah, the Krayt Dragon call is so bad it sounds like a youtube dub for some jokey fan clip. I can't believe it's in the real movie, and I can't imagine OBI-WAN ****ING KENOBI making such a ridiculous, masturbating-gorilla-wins-the-lottery hoot and holler. So, so, so, so ****ing bad.

You don't need to see everything happen to know that they did happen. Vader says "Bring my shuttle", and next time we see him he's on the star destroyer. We know he flew up on the shuttle, we have all the info we need, and the action flows uninterrupted. The shuttle ramp scene ties into ROTJ because that's where it came from, it's a cut scene. Why was it cut? Because it's a bad shot, slow and undramatic. The ROTJ scene was redone to make it better, much more dramatic. The cut scene not only sucks, but the action screeches to a halt to show it. Travelogue type scenes of the locations and landing ships are cool, and fine when there's nothing going on. But the action and emotion of this scene is not the place for it.

And Gino is right on, the original bring my shuttle line conveys Vader's anger and frustration. The new line has no emotion. So info that helps the scene is cut, and unneeded stuff is stuck in.

..I can't imagine OBI-WAN ****ING KENOBI making such a ridiculous, masturbating-gorilla-wins-the-lottery hoot and holler. So, so, so, so ****ing bad.

OMG, that's what it sounds like :lol

I gotta say, they really did take a sound that, while originally also doubling for the dewback cry, at least sounded like an animal, then replaced it with...hell I don't remember even, then replaced THAT with a sound that just sounds like a dude going "WOOOOOOOOO" and adding some effects to it. It doesn't sound animalistic at all. It just sounds like a dude yelling.

I think next time they need to bring in Paul Reubens to record the sound.

"AAAAHHHH!!!!"

I mean, at this point, why not try to make the sound as absurd as possible, right?

"Bring my shuttle" is PERFECT.

What irritates me abou tthat line "Alert my Star Destroyer..." was it had this sort of lymerick rythm to it. (Think "There once was a man from Nantucket") and it totally ruined the mood for me.

Plus, "Bring my shuttle." was in fact, perfect. Even the tone showed he was pissed.
