The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

Yeah, at least you can prop them up on the coffee table and look upon the greatness. Great BDs, both of them. :)

Seriously, though, I can kind of see where Cayman is coming from. There are different degrees of collector for movies. Me, I'll buy a movie at the drop of a hat, on even the idea that I may want to watch it more than once, and I want the ability to just pop it in whenever I feel like it. But I understand that not everyone's like that. Doesn't hurt my feelings.

I will say, though, Cayman.. Looking at your avatar, I've got to tell you that Seven Samurai is one hell of a Blu-ray. :)

Ugh! Really? I have two different translations on DVD (the original and the gorgeous box-set Criterion). Is it worth the upgrade? I could get to the end of that movie and just hit play all over again. Damn it's good.

I simply think it is narrow minded to dismiss an entire format because you dont agree with one directors attitude towards his product, which is what i think this entire thread has been about, if i am off the mark with that then i`ll dip me lid and bow out.

Nwerke, id quote some colourful adjectives under your username but i hardly thinks its ethical and or board allowed practice.

Actually, I couldn't tell you, I never owned the other editions (so the Blu-ray was a no-brainer). The BD is also Criterion, so it could be the same master, just higher resolution.

Here's a comparison: Seven Samurai Blu-ray Kurosawa Criterion I would say it looks very good for its age, but obviously doesn't look as crisp as brand new releases (but honestly, it doesn't have to).

And you're right.. it's definitely an amazing piece, a demonstration of what a true master filmmaker can do with the medium.

Well off the mark I'm afraid, nobody as far as I can recall has done that. Caymen's made his position pretty clear I think; he happens not to be a default early adopter and by no means is he dismissing the BR format.

Colourful? That ain't colourful. :lol I guess 'snipping' isn't very common nowadays - it used to be common practice to snip the contents of a post in a reply, especially where it wasn't necessary to repeat them; sometimes the contents would be replaced by whimsy, editorial commentary or jabs. I had to be clear who I was addressing here but (obviously) I didn't especially like the content of your posts and just wasn't in the mood to repeat them verbatim.

Anyway, I wasn't calling you by those names, I was calling your posts by those names. Are you saying I shouldn't have taken them as a wee bit on the patronising or arrogant side? If did wrong there, then please by all means elucidate.

Actually, i was refering to the adjectives i intended to use and patronising, hardly.

Your words under my quoted name, not cool. Clear enough?

I know what you meant. What I still don't know is whether you remotely understand how offensive you were? My adjectives were a fair description of the tone of your posts and nothing more.

Edit: look I'm not unreasonable, my invitation above wasn't insincere. If I've read your intent incorrectly, please clue me in. I'm struggling to see how it wasn't patronising, that's all. Let me know and I'll go back and edit in some much nicer words!

I would not judge it as offensive but i will concede it was flipant. My posts were short and to the point. I was not waveing any INSERT NAME HERE movie diplomas at anybody, just saying that to miss on the experience HD offers over a personal issue with a director is narrow minded. The exclusion of the word cinema may have been prudent.

Dont you think you are slightly overreacting?

Hey that's more what I was asking for. Flippant. OK, I can probably work with that. If that was your intent then my reaction would be an over-reaction from your POV, sure - I'm not exactly alone though, so I do think you've come off considerably harsher than that. Still, I said I'd edit, so edits ahoy.

So it all hinges on one movie trilogy, such a narrow view of cinema.

EDIT: I guess I can't multi-quote properly, haha!

That's the second time I've heard you talk about waving diplomas, as if we're film snobs (or you're anti-education?!). But then you take a dig at my "narrow view of cinema"? Maybe I just don't get where you're coming from. Are you pro-film education or anti-film education? Are you anti ivory tower academic but want to expand people's view of cinema? I'm lost.

As for BR: this WHOLE thread is about how I'd like the OOT on BR. I support the format, I just don't have funds to justify upgrading until a major event pushes me to do so. I'm not one that needs the latest and greatest tech. I loved film in the 80s on VHS, I love it now on DVD and streaming, and someday I'll love it on BR.

Fair play Nwerke, much apperciated.

Me either.

First time was on my own thread. I think its a good way to describe some of the things that go on shen, dont you?

Read my previous post

I get where your at now and will leave it at that. Forget George, seeing Alien on BluRay was like seeing it again for the first time, give it a try.

"To me, such a small detail does not detract from the expectation of seeing everything else in a format as yet unexperienced. I dont like it when people wave their movie diplomas around at other fans."

^ Ah, found it in the other thread. So, do you perceive some fans as styling themselves "film experts?" And that irritates you? Do you have a chip on your shoulder about people who do have film degrees, experience, or background? Is intellectual debate off-putting to you? What, in your view, should the SW BR debate sound like?

Good work Dick Tracy.

No, just have a problem with bleeters and people who like the look of their own words, know anyone like that?

I would like all possible versions made available but i wouldnt bang on about it thats for sure.

Sorry, an idiot question now. Can someone refresh me: what exactly does the Blu Ray format give you - the same definition as a theatre screen would? I've never seen one, y'see.

A Skynet moment perhaps.

Its main bonus is the level of picture detail Colin, sharper than a theatre sceen i think. Its made identifying props and parts of props a little easier for builders, to be relevant here.

LOL. Fun times. :)

Blaphe*, no, not quite. BR gives you 1080p, i.e. 1080 horizontal scan lines of resolution; a picture 1080 pixels high if you like. (Versus DVD, at 720 lines.) Both Blu-Ray and the now-defunct HD DVD format use blue lasers invented only a few years back; blue wavelengths being a good deal smaller than red ones allow a higher density of data to be recorded on a disc the same size as DVD. Brainless analogy: it's like writing with a smaller pencil. (HD also relied on more data compression, IIRC, whereas BR uses a "bluer" laser and can write smaller. Or something. "Or something" is the best get-out clause ever, I must use it more often.)

Real film gives you greater resolution than that, by roughly four times IIRC. (Or something! Or something!!) Some films (like AOTC and ROTS) which were shot on early DV film cameras don't, as those cameras recorded in 1080p in the first place.

* I know the joke is long dead at this point but I'm NEVER going to let it go!!! :lol
