The Martian Space Suit

Great thread, guys. Apologies if this has been brought up already, but does anyone know if some of this suit is reused from other productions? That vest looks a lot like a modified Star Trek: Enterprise EV suit.

It has a similar shape and look but there seems to be some differences that I feel make it scratch built / designed.

Although the suit in general has a lot of similarities to the Enterprise EV suit.

I love the suit from Enterprise but this suit is a totally new design, this is a big movie production, big name actors, with a major director, no way they would use a suit from a TV production from 14 years ago.

If anyone is looking for the Nike shoes for the flight suit bits, there is a sale on the 9.5 US sized ones for like $68 on eBay until the 31st. Seems to ONLY be the 9.5s though.

Wanted to post these... Used photoshop and lots of images to try to make life-size templates of the armor pieces, excluding the chest/back and arm computer.

Here is everything I could see. I'm not 100% on the foot plate, some photos it looks like the edge facing the toes is straight, some images it looks like the corners are angled like the edge facing your leg. There are rivets on almost everything, as well. And the ankle piece looks like it has a duplicate underneath, possible connected by the rivets on the top plate.

The shoulder and knee armor look to be riveted right onto the suit.

The elbow armor has rivets, but it looks like a big elastic band keeps it in place. Maybe both?

The bigger ankle piece has three buckles that go around and the skinny, small ankle piece, along with the foot plate, are hooked onto the shoe-sandal-cleat webbing.

These were made with photoshop and sized against a 3D model of a human form I made and took an orthographic photo of. The 3D human was sized to my height and the pieces then scaled to fit with reference photos. My printer is out of ink, otherwise I'd check them for realsies so they may be off slightly or so. The honeycomb pattern on the photos is just to represent the inset, tiny honeycomb pattern on the costume armor. Maybe carbon fiber?

Thanks! I'm also trying to work on a graphic for the arm computer. I know a member or two mentioned getting one 3D printed but I'll probably end up using sheets of foam for mine.

Here's what I have for the top/main panel for the arm computer.

Still working out the sides and front/back. Seems like the end nearest your elbow has a battery or something underneath. Silver and tubular.

Also trying to make a graphic to print out and put on the computer. Can't quite make out the different numbers it displays. The clearest shot is in the trailer, when he takes his helmet off in the Hab.

Great job! Anyone know what type of "screws" are used on those plates? Perhaps that could give a good reference for clay sculpting them?

No idea what kind of screws or rivets those are on the armor (not the arm gadget). They look like a flat or slightly convex head with two holes, top and bottom.

Jockey,
I have a brief conversation with Andy Weir and we talked about your patch. He told me that your spelling of Martinez and Johanssen were not correct and i wanted to pass that on to you. Great JOB by the way looks great!!

Well here is a small update on the Patch, was pretty straightforward, still have to do some shading and embroiding always makes this look a lot better. I'm still not convinced I have the right font, as a font source I used the ARES live title card from the video. This gave me several fonts with the most resemblance by Korataki ExtraLight, however it's E is too round, the S is oke though, Next up was Spacecolony Bold, which was close but also too round, I eventually settled on Stereo Gothic 400 and 800. Which is not perfect but I think it fits the most with style of the patch and art direction. Below is my image source for the font:

On to the Patch, here is the preliminary patch without the names, scaling and stuff is not optimal but it's a start, if anybody has any tips let me know!

UPDATE; Here is version 2, still need to do some finetuning

Okay, from what I can tell, both sides of the wrist computer are the same. So I've just finished my little template for it. I'll keep checking it against reference photos but as far as I can see, it looks correct.

Also, quick mock-up for the heck of it.

I don't have an exact pattern for the biosuit parts. The font used for the writing is Nasalization, although I had to manually make the letters bigger to look right.

Those spanner heads are also a type of security screw. If you're having a hard time finding them look in kits of other security screw sets. As a side note, they're the same as the pivot screws on the ST Enterprise phase pistol (sorry, another Enterprise reference. I'll stop now ;) )

MoviesColin Amazing work! And thanks for sharing.

I´m hoping to woop up some 3d models soon and do some more work on the 3d model of the helmet.

So this is my first RPF post. I loved the book and am looking forward to the film a lot. As Andreas pointed out the screws are called spanner head screws. They are also referred to as snake eye screws.

I work at a sign shop and we use them for installation and assembly. They are stainless steel and come in both machine screw and sheet metal screw varieties.

We get our screws through Grainger, you can also get the appropriate driver bit thru them. It is important to note that using a manual, hand screwdriver over a drill is recommended as the driver tips don't have much contact and can break easily. Also going into a properly predrilled hole, for the sheet metal screws, or tapped hole, for the machine screws, is imperative in achieving a good result.
