The Martian Space Suit

Mystic5523 I wasthinking of buying a "close enough" wetsuit,. so I googled "wetsuit orange white" a while back,. these where my results,. The one to the right would have the correct gestallt when combined with all the other items,. but it seems to only come in children sizes,. closest I could find though..

I did mochup my arm/glove connector in sealed foam paintet with Games Workshops new Retributor Armour paint,. I didn't think it would be as close as it turned out to be. In other GW paints the orange on the hard part chest armour seem to match with Fire Dragon Bright.

(so I use the GW paint colour to figure out colours,. not pantone,. hahaha)

Nice catch!

I also want to note for anybody sewing the neoprene suits together that there is a black, mesh type fabric on the inside of the elbows and back of the thighs. This makes seven different fabrics for the main suit : the orange pattern, the white pattern, the bio suit / circuit pattern, the black mesh, the rubber elastic at the shoulder joints, and the gray stripe with red triangles down the arms.

Great observation, MoviesColin. I'm wondering if it's not neoprene though, wouldn't it be very uncomfortable to wear in a desert environment? I'd like to speculate further, like taking notes on how the fabric behaves in the trailers, but I have no experience with fabrics what so ever :(

But there seem to be several different materials involved. The one that fascinates me is the black rings between the cuff and the glove.

I never thought of painting it as an option, but it might look great if you put orange wash over a metal part.

I'm pretty certain based on the appearance that the rings that connect the gloves and suit are a milled aluminum that have been painted with a transparent paint.

I noticed some more fun stuff while looking really closely.
The glove and "battle belt" might be custom or from the same manufacturer.

I think the underside of the gloves (palm side) isn't a checkered fabric but I think it's a silicone webbing for gripping. Similar to dive gloves or other work type gloves.

As for the rest of the fabrics, to me they look more like sportswear sweatshirts and stuff. Like the polyester spandex stuff.

Hahaha, Mystic 5523 my mistake,. it's late friday here,. I am so focused on the spacesuit, that I read jumpsuit and instantly thought spacesuit. Tell me if you find a nice looking flightsuit.

Oh, I was meaning the grey flight suit not hte space suit. I can't afford to get into that one so I'm just wanting to do the cheaper (hopefully easier) flight suit from here: http://www.therpf.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=486839&d=1433731670

Depending on how close you wanted to get it, a gray nomex flight suit with the proper patches would work.

The CWU 27/P suit looks close to me at first glance...

Moments ago I was doing the exact same thing!

I was also looking and white and/or grey suits, that could be marked up with ink pen or airbrush.

I'm less of a stickler for "complete replica", so if I don't look exactly like Mark Watney I'll be okay. Call me "ARES II" !

For those unable to find a Wild Country Vision, this keep the same color scheme:

You were part of the Ares 1 or Ares 2 then maybe?,. :) Attleast that was going to be my story when I was thinking of doing that..

The last one,. that quicksilver suit looks very close.
Some of the wetsuits I've looked at make very nice scifi suits.,

The wetsuit all look nice but keep in mind the screen suit isn't skin tight. There's a bit of sag and droop in places... I had considered a wet suit but I'm not fond of skin-tight clothing and was happy that the Mars suits are still a little baggy (accounting for air pressure maybe?)

That's not the only problem with wetsuits, remember that it's not practical to use on set. That's why I think they might have used another more breathable material. The sweatshirt idea just snapped to me as something really plausible for this reason.

I haven't actually looked for a cooling shirt yet, I kind of assumed they would be out of my budget range. Cool idea though, and as someone posted, easy enough to hook up to a reservoir in the backpack.

Well if anybody comes across a full body suit made of that 100% polyester lining, don't hesitate to post it. The closest looking material I can find is from those 5.11 type "tactical" shirts.

To support @MoviesColin post: Maybe some kind of softshell material was used in the suit? I have this Jacket in black and the fabric looks very similar, and the label says it has some breathing capability...

I'm of a change of opinion, I think the initial idea of a neoprene suit is the most accurate one, especially after seeing how thick it looks and the typical wet-suit seams present. It's strange to see that they chose this as it is an uncomfortable material to wear in hot environments but it will look great on film :p

Okay, so I've been trying for the past couple of hours now to create a 3D model of the chest rig/harness, so I can cut it into pieces and project them flat to print off as templates for foam/clay/whatever medium I'm going to end up using to make it.

Right now it's kind of rough but it's looking alright, in my opinion. Some nasty Z-fighting going on but oh well for now.

Also, I wanted to say that it looks like there's a seventh material on the main suit. A white padded fabric on the top of the shoulders, underneath the shoulder pad.
