The Martian Space Suit

as a new member I have subscribed to 3 threads. The nostromo uniforms, Alien environmental suit and this one. I just have to write and say you guys are amazing. The way you can view something and then identify it. The way you are building up this spacesuit. I am in AWE of you all. Thanks for all this it is a pleasure to look and learn from the masters.

Sooo, regarding the buckles I need your help.

This is my first draft of a parts list from AustraAlpin:
All in orange I am not quite sure of, and all in red is a wild ass guess.

And for reference and so that we all talk about the same thing I've numbered them. The numbers correspond to the "Reference Numbers column"

All Input Welcome

Update: Pos. 6 is no 2 Slot Buckle, is a 33mm Asymmetrical Belt Buckle and has the code FC32A and not FC41A

If you are still looking for the manufacturer of these it's OCUN from the Czech Republic. I know these but I think the one on the suit was simply sewn from webbing, It has no kind of load bearing stitching under the carabiners.

Correct, the top and bottom are Ocun. The two in the middle including the "Y-lanyard" are from an Italian gear company called Kong.

I agree, it doesn't look like a legit piece of climbing equipment. They must have blown the budget on all those buckles! lol. But I do think it's supposed to represent a "y-lanyard" since it has the two snap hook carabiners. 19mm looks about right to me for the width. I'll probably go with the Ocun myself and modify it just because I haven't found anything closer.

Trying to think outside of the box on the headlights. The more I look at this photo:

(Thanks, soulinertia)

The more I think it's a camcorder of some sort. Here are some Sony models

Why else would there be a black ring like a lens, and then a clear square window below it? Looks like a lens and a light for the camera. However, I can't find any that even look modified.

Looking at waterproof cameras, lights, bike lights, helmet lights and cameras. I'm going insane looking for these. An important detail is they are flipped. So I was looking at right and left handed cameras that could allow for a mirrored look...

Those do look really close to the shape of the devices on the helmet.

Initially, I thought it could be a rangefinder of some sort, but white light came from the black ring and the rectangular portion below it. Further, a blue/violet light is emitted from the rear of the device. Then, I started looking for helmet and bike lights. However, the helmet lights all were too militaristic and the none of the bike lights I found had the blue/violet light feature on the back.

I am stumped as well. I've spent many hours paging through images of bike lights, helmet lights, and rangefinders. The more I think about it, it probably is a custom piece, either a modified camcorder/light or a fully custom 3D printed piece.

Cheers,
Ben

  • When designing the space suits in the movie, the costume designer looked at many of NASA’s actual Mars suits and said they were “exactly like a Buzz Lightyear suit” from how bulky they were, Ridley Scott even disliked them, so the end designs of the suits were based on images of actual suits but aimed for a more practical approach.
  • The suits in the film use a very complex and actual functioning lighting system.
  • 15 suits were made for the film, using a team of 6 people.

I am intrigued by the quick release type fittings on the two hoses at his left hip.
They look like they fit into the two ports on his left upper leg.

Looks like they are crimped to a black pressure line inside the fabric sleeve.

Is anyone familiar with things like that?

PS: Qxy Acetylene welding uses the blue red color code

I have a feeling the base of these suits are based on wetsuits. However, I feel as though they will be a pain in the a** to make, as will the helmet. Does anyone have any experience with printing designs onto neoprene?

Cheers,
Ben

Looking closely at the suit and especially at the cuff connections makes me think it's either very thin neoprene but probably something else. Because neoprone is the worst for fine machining and manufacturing,

The wrist cuff connectors looks a ton like a KUBI dry glove systems used in cold weither diving, I have the same system on my suit and it looks like a match. They probably also added some rubber seals on the wrist side to make it bit thicker.

Regarding printing on the fabric suit. I wonder if it would be the easiest to order from one of those companies that print on beach flags and sports wear, etc.?
I don't have any experience with printed fabrics so I'm mostly interested in hearing what the community thinks.

The fabric definately looks like something from a wet suit / neoprene. This type of material seems like a pain to sew.

Hey guys, did some more work on 3d modeling and here is the rough top version of the wrist monitor, still need to do the attachment and sides. WBE and I were thinking we could put this into a small kit which uses a smartphone for the display, anybody interested?

Seems like you have already done most of the work with the 3D models. They are easy to fasten to the suit with just an orange strap.
What modeling software did you use?

Definitely looks like thin neoprene to me. Looks like the same texture that my wetsuit is. There are a couple sites that can print onto neoprene in 1 yardx1.5 year measurements based on an image you upload. I'll get a quote today with the patterns I made and see if I could get a bulk discounted order for everyone.

My Wild Country Vision v2 harness came in today. Not the accurate v1 used in the film but scooped it up off eBay for $30 so figured it's a back up in case the Greek source doesn't work.
