Paint as per a clean shield. Mist black over it – most use acrylic. Attack with acetone.

It's all going to be in your technique and execution. Overdo it and it'll look crap. Don't do it enough and it'll look crap. The theory is the easy part.

Hey I have been working on this shield for a bit and thought I would share what I did. This is the second one I have done.

I first used the steel saucer sled and stripped it. I had more problems stripping it than anything else. It didn't bubble like it should.

Once I finished that I chucked it in to a corded drill that I clamped to the table. I spun it up and used 100 grit sandpaper to get a nice look. I then used a clear flexible ruler and an xacto knife to cut the tape in to a consistent circle. I painted it vertically and used the duplicolor metalcast paint than used Krylon Gloss clear followed by a wet sand and a satin clear.

I then cut out a piece of 040 aluminum in a 10 inch circle and put Velcro on the back to attach to a buffer. I made sure it was sort of center and then took 240 grit sandpaper and gave it a spun look. TO cut out the star I used a CNC router and just zeroed it on the center of the spin.

This is the firs shield in these three pictures but I wanted to show the design I came up with for back mounting it.

I used 2 bolts on the shield to slide into the top of the back buckle and a magnet to keep the shield from tipping upward. I liked this better then just a magnet because it doesn't sway.

I cut out everything my self for this. It took a couple weekends to finish.

Heres a video of my attempt, I was told to use Duplicator but unfortunetly it was near impossible get that here in the UK so I went into work and came up with my own colours and I think they came out pretty well

I though a gloss finish would look quite nice but instead went for a more accurate satin finish all round

Hey guys! Very awesome shields on here! I am thinking of buying a shield from ArtFunk (as i already have the classic king arts, so i want a fiberglass shield aswell) to paint myself. I am either going to paint a stealth shield or a classic battle damage. But do you guys think it would work to brush the shield with sandpaper to get the "spun aluminium look"?
Thanks if anyone wants to help!

From what I would guess is that using sandpaper would give you a texture of the brushed look but I don't know if it would tear up the fiberglass, possibly use a finer grit to start with and see what happens.

Hi Everyone! So I've probably read this thread over and over to the point to where I was planning on getting a blank shield, not sure where but I was determined. =) Of course, I need permission from the wife and she said I can get one but rather buy one already painted because I have zero experience with painting and I don't quite trust myself messing up also. I browsed and did a search in the thread on where I should start looking for a finished one I guess but found out nothing. Anyone can steer me in the right direction?

Etsy usually has some, I'm sure there's someone here that could help.

I'm actually looking for a fiberglass shield. Anyone know who to talk to about that?

Thanks BDBear! I appreciate the help. I will have a look there. I'm still open to suggestions also. :)

If you want a fiberglass shield you can ask Artfunk or you could check ebay to see if there are any more efx shields left (they are quite expensive) but i would go and contact Artfunk here on the rpf because he can paint the shield in any version you like: WS classic red, WS stealth version, TFA/WS classic battle damage etc.

There are a few on etsy in all varying price ranges. I make one at the $330 mark. Here is a link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/259967595/captain-america-shield-replica
There are some aluminum shields on there as well that look very nice but are bit expensive.

What paints did you use for this specifically? Im currwntly stripping my shield to repaint and this looks great in my opinion

I always keep House of colour paint in stock and since their candy apple red and cobalt blue are completely transparent I chose dos so that the metal finish would still shine through

then it was just finished off with HB Body satin lacquer

So I have a question that I have been filtering through this post about. With battle damaging your shield, did you apply the damage(acrylic paint and sanding) before or after the clear coat? I was thinking of doing this after the clear coat due to the "damage" would happen to a clean shield, any thoughts?

To anyone that did the rivets to hold the star onto the shield: did you drill the pilot holes all the way through the shield?

My shield's been taped up forever and a day, I need to get moving on it.

Separate question, has anyone ever done a plastic shield that turned out looking like metal? NYCC bans metal prop weapons, and they took my aluminum shield last year. Obviously, I'd like to avoid that this year, and the only way to do that is go plastic. Thoughts?

Re: The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Ok. Read a bunch but wanted to get a final opinion.

what are the best paints to get the age of Ultron matte finish on caps shield?

which red?
which blue?
which clear coat?
which tape?
which techniques?

i am about to start my first project. It will be the only one I can afford to do, so I am hoping it comes out really well!

thanks guys!

Also, who is the king of the leather strap kit? Would love to pick one up for my shield.

Hi all, I sold my steel sled shield (heartbreaking) and bought a blank, I am very excited to start but the one difference I am worried about is the grooves. How do people approach them? leave them blank paint them or what I considering is having the blue meet the red in the middle of the groove, that being said what have people found to be the best way to cut masking tape in the groove evenly
